My history with formal writing: A challenging subject I had been putting off the research paper as long as I could, now I was in real trouble. The night before the due date and all I had was my name and four blank pages. The essay was to summarize the life of a famous person in history. The topic was not the problem; it was my procrastination. I had always been good about getting my homework done in time except when it came to formal writing. Formal writing has always been hard for me because of the formatting and citing, I am hoping this class will help me overcome these obstacles and make writing fun and enjoyable. I will first tell you about my history with formal writing, then I will talk about using online article databases and googling information. I will then discuss my experience with sources and quotes, using MLA format and my experience using in-text parenthetical citations. …show more content…
I haven’t had to write a lot of papers in my life besides the occasional assignments in middle school and high school. Back in middle school it was mainly trying to get your handwriting down, creating rough drafts and then finalizing them in Microsoft Word. I had a few papers to write in high school but we were given multiple days to research and brainstorm what we wanted to talk about. This is really the first class I have taken that is dedicated to writing formal essays in a specified format with topics that are a little more challenging than what I have experienced in the
MLA format is something I have always kind of needed help with. Until this semester for some reason I could never really cite my sources that well. Its something I knew how to do, but when it came time to do it my mind went blank. When you went over everything on the bored that helped me so much (also because I took notes), but only because you told us to take them. With MLA format I learned that when quoting, if its more than three lines you have to use block quote. I didn’t know that till I got to this class.
Students are subjected to write an array of essays, but they lack the required tools needed to effectively deliver a great paper. They are struggling to write and teachers are needing to design and conform to their current student’s needs. New methods are created and implemented in order to execute the daunting task of learning how to write a well-developed paper. Practical recommendations are brought forth for teachers to use and good teachers will learn to design instruction and activities based on suitable references. Teachers must set goals and deliver their lesson with specific strategies to meet their objectives. They must learn to improve skills dramatically by observing and modifying the students. Teachers must plan strategies in order to help the struggling students catch up or exceed in their writing skills. They must learn to motivate their students by keeping them engaged throughout the writing process if not they risk losing the student’s ability and focus to do better.
I have wrote many different kind of essay and paper. From a point of view of three person, first person, what you think this person is telling you, to writing how you feel, what changed your life to where do you see yourself in the next 10 years. I enjoyed this writing class and I know my teacher has enjoy my present. The only bad thing I can say is I HATE writing annotated bibliography and anything that have something to do with it,
The premise of this progress report is to evaluate my progress from January eighth to February eighteenth. Over the last six weeks, we have covered key paper writing principles such as: thinking as a writer, planning and drafting, effective thesis statements, characteristics of an MLA paper, revising, and general punctuation rules. I found planning to be useful so I can stay on track; however, I still get in too much of a hurry and forget to go back to my original outline. After studying drafting and revising, I realized that I could never get a perfect paper on the first try but, through revision, I can eventually get a decent finished product. The characteristics of an MLA paper caught my interest as well and held my attention more than the other subjects because I still need to improve my MLA formatting. Finally. I
Writing is so much easier when you don’t have a ridiculous amount of guidelines you have to follow. With literary freedom, we are able to express ourselves more than if we have to follow a specific set of rules for every thing we write. This is one downfall for high school English. We have to order our papers in a specific sequence while writing about a topic that is chosen for us. This English composition class changed all of that. We were able to write about anything that related to the given type of essay, which greatly improved our ability to fully immerse ourselves into every paper. This greatly affected my writing thoughts about writing; they changed from hating to write for school to actually enjoying it because I was able to
Have you ever felt incompetent because you wrote a horrible essay, or have you ever saved a whole essay for the night before? Have you ever wanted to die because you are writing the absolute most boring topic ever? If yes was the answer to any of those questions, I suggest taking Writing in the Liberal Arts with Professor Hilsher at Houghton College. It benefited me greatly. Before I took this class, I did not care if my essays were mediocre or boring. I just wanted to hand them in. Writing 101 has changed my perspective on writing. I learned many specific things that cleared my writing up, writing a rough draft first is important, and finding ways to incorporate passions into all pieces makes a difference.
Need for MLA formatting reflection and improvement. In her brief feedback the professor highlighted a need for MLA formatting improvement. This is an admitted weakness of mine as the format is rarely used in my chosen profession. This task is even more difficult due to years of professional writing in Army correspondence style. The old adage of “practice makes perfect” is the best course of action to improve this skill for academic improvement. The AMU library as well as the provided course materials will likely be the best locations for demonstrated works with proper formatting. These resources will be instrumental in my continued improvement and renovation as a writer.
The nature of writing has changed in the past century. While writing still remains a form of visual communication, much of this change has been a result of technological advancements such as, from pen to paper or from a typewriter to a networked computer. The changes and expansion in the ways we are able to write today have brought about changes in writing pedagogy as well. The teaching of writing has been part of formal schooling in the United States for over 200 years (Kean 7). One major pedagogic change in United States’ education has to do with the implementation of the Common Core State Standards. These standards have led to a change in the instruction of writing in schools. This paper, will focus on instructional changes of writing over time and current expectations for writing abilities as whole.
When starting college this January, it was a major transition from how high school allowed students to write papers. In high school, the writing prompts and essays that were given were not too lengthy and very specific on what to write about so it was not too difficult to clasp everything together. However, going in to my EN100 class it showed me how to open up my mind more and use a lot more of my own natural style on a paper rather than keep it solely based on research. Taking this course was very different from high school because you are allowed to write about what you want and that leaves a very broad option of choices to go for which may be extremely hard to narrow down. Even though it is difficult to eliminate down to one topic of choice,
During my time in high school, we didn’t write many detailed, in-depth, and highly analytical papers. Unfortunately—or fortunately, for those that don’t enjoy writing—we didn’t write many difficult papers at all. My most challenging paper I believe I ever wrote was a research paper for a physics class. We didn’t write long papers very often either, the most probably being a five-page thesis paper, which was graded so leniently I could have written the day before and still earn myself a fairly decent grade. English 12 (which was the class I took senior year) taught me absolutely nothing about structures of essays, or how to think and analyze critical information while reading, or even how to make a good argument. I’ve spent far too much time in school being taught about grammar and vocabulary than learning how to write papers at a level that I feel is acceptable for college courses. What I am most upset about by my education,
Coming into freshman comp at the beginning of the semester I was worried this would be my hardest class and that I would hate it. Walking in the classroom on the first day and hearing the words, “you will be writing a 10-12 page paper by the end of the semester,” gave me so much anxiety and made me very nervous for the class. As the class is now coming to a close it has made me realize I should have never been so worried about this class and that I would learn many new things I did not know about writing such as writing strategies, metacognition, and how to write a good research paper.
I have never been an extremely strong writer, so the thought of writting college level essays frightend me. I received good grades on all my essays in high school because I put in 110% when only 100% was needed. I would stay after school and talk to my teacher or spend my lunch and before school in the tutoring center. I never put that much effort into any of my other classes. My sister who is a senior at Arizona State University would always tell me how you do not get the one on one help you get in high school in college. Therefore, my expectation for the class' dificulty level was high. I believed there would be multiple ten page essays that we would be given a relatively short amount of time to finish. Despite how terrifying that was to
They don’t just give you pointers on how you should create your writing there are also those times where they expect you to write a whole argument down in less than an hour time period. I would remember it as a very difficult task to do. I wouldn't really have the time to get my idea across what I was trying to say or argue. I would have to limit myself to a small amount of writing just so I can have my five paragraph paper. When your writing you get taught that you shouldn’t be distracting yourself from the topic your trying to convey. Every paragraph you would have to maintain to a specific amount of sentences just to direct yourself on what your trying to
When it came to the essays writing became a little trickier because I had to understand what it was I needed to write about and the style in which I need to write it in. There are nine essay writing methods which I learned while attending this course: exemplification, compare/contrast, cause and effect, proposal, narration, process, division/classification, definition, and argument. The only problems I encountered when trying to write the essays that were assigned to me by the instructor was finding suitable subject matter to write about. Once I found my topics for my essay, everything else became easier. I would first produce a rough draft and then the students, the instructor, and myself would go over them in class and decided if what I was writing was in its best form. Most of my rough drafts needed improvement, but if it didn’t it wouldn’t be a rough draft, so it was understood. My final drafts were very satisfying for me as well as the grades I received on them.
At the beginning of this class I was nervous on how this semester will go and whether or not I will succeed to my fullest potential in English. With that in my mind I still was trying my best to work at getting better, despite how much it made me cringe at the thought of it. My perspective of writing began to change as time went on, the assignments were based on interesting topics which made it a bit bearable for me. I’ve learned that you have to make the steps to get to the perfect paper. A paper requires you to brainstorm, make an outline, and writing your rough draft to get that feedback you need before finishing up that final draft. During this class I have also learned where to put my thesis and that I don’t need to have that three point subtopics of what you should talk about. The writing length started getting longer and I was a bit skeptical on how I can get to the word count or what will I talk about within my papers, but I have
