Introduction.
In this paper I will discuss what forms of oppression there are in Chicago. Next, what cause or drive oppression. Third, how oppression affects clients. Fourth, how the United States’ cultural structure encourages or discourages privilege and /or disadvantage. Fifth, why privilege or discrimination continues. Last, what are effective strategies that oppressed groups can use to take back power?
First, I will start this paper with the definition of oppression given by Webster Dictionary and also by the social work dictionary. Typically, a government or political organization that is in power places these restrictions formally or covertly on oppressed groups so that they may be exploited and less able to compete with other social groups. The oppressed individual or group is devalued, exploited and deprived of privileges by the individual or group which has more power" (Barker, 2003).
Forms of Oppression
In order to analyze what forms of oppression I recognize in Chicago, I will mention that as this city hosts several ethnic groups there are different ways to approach the oppression among them. For example, the African-American population currently is seeing as being involved in gangs and drug deals. That population is also stereotyped like lazy, effortless, and living from Welfare’s benefits only.
Black people face oppression in the form of incarceration, homelessness, poverty, joblessness, police brutality, institutionalization, violence, domestic abuse, sexual assault, and bulling. Hispanic population and other minorities seem to face the same type of discrimination. For instance, the capitalist society creates the conditions in which oppressed people harm other oppressed people. For instance, white people or people who have privilege, meaning that they have a career and a job, are privileged. On the other hand, there are a lot of disadvantaged population that won’t have the opportunity to live as their white folks. Disadvantaged population can be a minority of Whites, African-American, Hispanic and other minorities that didn’t developed the tools and skills to compete with a privileged population.
