Forrest Gump’s Emotional Dumps In the movie, Forrest Gump, Tom Hanks plays an intellectually handicapped man named Forrest Gump from Greenbow, Alabama. The majority of the movie took place through his recounting of his memories from early childhood all the way up to his current age. This paper looks at Forrest’s ability to communicate, his diligence in a relationship, ability to cope, and his self-perception. Communication Needs Work Interpersonal communication is an interactional process in which one person sends a message to another. To be an effective communicator you must be good at both speaking and listening. (Weiten, Dunn, and Hammer, 2016, p. 221) Forrest excelled at listening, but struggled with speaking. In particular, he lacked …show more content…
Even though he didn’t have a large quantity of friends, he did have high quality friends. Those friendships prospered because of the things he did for them. Relationship maintenance involves the actions and activities used to sustain the desired quality of a relationship. (Weiten et al., 2016, p. 257) These actions include being positive, open, assuring, and doing joint activities. Agnew and VanderDrift showed that these actions can be used to promote interdependence and stability or can protect a relationship from threat. (Weiten et al., 2016, p. 257) The relationship that he worked on the most was with Jenny. Every time he got the chance he spent time with her and told her about the important things going on in his life. When Jenny left for D.C. Forrest showed her how much he cared for her. He gave Jenny the Medal of Honor that he had just received, and he said, “I got it just by doing what you told me to do.” (Zemeckis, 1994) Forrest had to deal with problems in his relationship with Jenny on a regular basis. Every time a problem would arise within the relationship he would try his best to work it out. He adjusted well when relationship problems arose. Unhealthy Coping His coping style, to say the least, was counterproductive. Coping refers to efforts to master, reduce, or tolerate the
All of which brings us to Winston’s desire and the individual with whom he simultaneously has the relationship that makes his miserable, isolated life worthwhile. Winston’s lack of trust
At first, Winston felt no true attraction to Julia, but in their second time making love, Winston felt the physical loyalty that is involved in relationships. Winston was in love with Julia and they had created a bond of loyalty together which is very dangerous to do so
Nathan Bedford Forrest was born July 13, 1821 in Chapel Hill, Tennessee. Forrest was born into a very poor family. He grew up with no education. When Nathan was sixteen his father William Forrest died. After the death of his father, Nathan went to work for his uncle Jonathan Forrest. Nathan worked for his uncle at a tailor shop in Hernando, Mississippi. Jonathan Forrest was killed in 1845 in a street fight over a business strife. Seeking revenge Nathan went after the murderers and killed two and wounded two others.
In Finding Forrester, Jamal withstands his punishment after his professor, Crawford, falsely blames him for plagiarism. It takes a great deal of courage for Jamal to retain the secret friendship that him and his mentor have. William Forrester faces his own problems as well. He puts his writing days to a halt and, according to Holden (2000), “It has something to do with his paranoid fear of being critically misinterpreted” (p. 8). The audacity of the critics ripping apart the author’s book causes him to stumble in his career, but he finds the courage to continue doing what he loves most. If he gives up writing forever due to someone else’s opinion, he will never truly be happy and may let this difficult time ruin his life. His bravery, however, allows him to persevere through this drawback. He eventually gains enough courage to take on this strenuous challenge. Unfortunately, Forrester is aware he has cancer when he meets Jamal, but does not let his young companion know. Before the friendship forms, the lonely elder has nothing to lose. He has no known family members, and not even a single soul is aware that a famous author occupies an apartment in their building. Forrester then utilizes his inner courage and allows Jamal to take a deeper look into his life. This action, however, puts William in a tough situation: to befriend Jamal while aware he has a deadly disease or push him away in order to save his feelings. Forrester
Since Forrest wasn’t very smart he never thought he would go to college, but one day he was seen running across a football field and they (who’s they) wanted him.
She pulled Winston out of his depression and they made promise to each to never betray each
Forrest Gump is carried by faith, wit, finesse, ignorance, and love throughout the plot. Forrest Gump may have not understood his place in those events, but he did have an impact on the society around him. At the basis of the movie, it is a love story, between Forest and Jenny. While he spends nearly the whole movie mooning over Jenny, she spends the whole movie trying to escape that love until the end. To her, love is sick and twisted because all she's ever known is her father's abusive version of it.
In today’s society, those who do not assimilate into their culture and their surrounding environment are considered abnormal, and are excluded, perhaps even forced into isolation. Forrest Gump is a perfect example of a character who does not fit in because of his disability, and the way people in his community treat him epitomize the dangerous effects of how ingrained “normalcy” is in society. Many obstacles are set up against Forrest as soon as he is born; furthering his education is stunted, opportunities for him to join the Army are squandered because of his impairment, his romantic and platonic relationships are tumultuous at best. What the people in his hometown who poke fun at and isolate Forrest fail to realize, is that despite his shortcomings, Forrest is an optimistic, helpful person who sees the best in everyone and every situation. While he might not have been the smartest kid in class, he could have easily been the student with the most school spirit and would have worked just as hard.
It was a boring and dutiful marriage than one of true emotions. Their marriage was non physical because of no real love and their physical intimacy that did occur was a burden to Katherine. She did not enjoy it, and only did as a “ duty to the party” or way to produce children. It was a completely shameful and unfulfilling relationship for Winston, and ending in their separation. Further interactions with women were similar for Winston, disappointing, and tainted with views parrell of “party duty”, overall cold and lacking of passion.
Being raised by his mother, Forrest never really learned how to be mean. That one “stupid” man had a heart of gold, which is shown when he proposes to Jenny. Jenny tells Forrest that he would not want to marry her, to which Forrest replied “I’m not a smart man, but I know what love is.” This quality is shown throughout the movie with romantic love, friendship, and Forrest’s kindness to everyone in general. He always loved his mother for raising him and believing in him.
Forrest and Jenny meet on the school bus on the first day of school. They become best friends at school and throughout their whole childhood. Jenny used to try and protect Forrest and stand up for him because he
Jenny played a large role in Forrest’s life. She had been friends with Forrest since the first time Forrest took the bus to school. She had an open seat and offered it to him when no one else did. From that day on, they were best friends. After high school, Jenny definitely changed in many ways, and because Forrest and she had been so close, a lot of the changes she made affected Forrest and impacted his life dramatically. Although many of her decisions did not directly affect Forrest, his heart and mind often returned to her.
He impacted many of those around him and even those who were far from
If you try your best in everything you will do better in life. If you want to succeed and have a good life you will want to try and do good things. So with your job, if you do something you hate then you will not want to get up early and do your work good. But if you have a job you love if will want to get up early and put the hard work
Within each stage in Forrest Gump’s life, a catastrophe has happened, and it shows how the explicit symbol that Forrest has interpreted his crisis and how he had dealt with this crisis. You see Forrest as a child, along with the relationship he had with his mother, and then later in life, the relationship he builds with his sweetheart, Jenny.
