Civilians can access the preserve for activities such as fishing and hunting. The entire training area and preserve take up almost 200,000 acres of land. Fort Polk experiences hot humid summers and moderate winters. High temperatures in the summer average almost 95 degrees, and average winter temperatures can go as low as around 40 degrees.

Fort Polk houses over 10,000 soldiers per year. It is home to as much as seven military operating units. The base is also the staging grounds for the Louisiana National Guard. The base also houses facilities to maintain and display archeological finds.

In the 1940’s, the military acquired the Fort Polk land from private owners. The area was once home to a thriving lumber trade. Today, scientists study the land to find archeological clues about the area’s past.
