Forte: a person's strong suit, or most highly developed characteristic, talent, or skill; something that one excels in. Everyone has a forte.
Primarily in my academic career, I found myself completing assignments and studying for tests to receive the 100% my parents wished to see. However, as high school rolled around, my forte shifted from doing busy school work to more creative and inquisitive thinking. Engaged mostly in business and history courses, my grades began slipping in other subjects. I still masked intelligence in different subjects but my customary routine of finishing homework began diminishing. I would excel in some classes but suffer in others, which is why my GPA doesn’t meet the requirements that Kelley has set out for its
Furthermore, one of my most challenging experiences was maintaining a 3.0+ GPA in school while attending Oakland Community College in the Dual Enrollment Program. It was a tough situation to be in, due to the excessive amount of work I had to do for both high school and college. Every week I had to complete a chapter of my book, which consisted of long sections using words that I have never even heard of in my life, the prolonged chapters were followed by a required one to two-page essay that was due the next week or else it was considered late. Now keep in mind that these essays were a huge part of my overall grade, so I am embarrassed to say that out of the ten chapters, about four or five of them were late, but the reason for that is because
A special attribute that sets me apart is my tendency to work hard. I constantly try to do my best in everything that I do. Throughout high school, I’ve always set a high standard for myself by taking rigorous classes, joining sports and clubs, and maintaining a high GPA. Even if certain classes didn’t have any relation to nursing, club meetings were the day before a large exam, or tennis practice was especially grueling, I still worked hard and put in as much effort as I could. With this type of attitude, I was able to maintain Distinguished Honor Roll and a cumulative 4.08 GPA throughout my high school career. I chose to maintain this attitude during senior year instead of taking it easy, as I was able to gain knowledge and experience that
Livingston’s advice of striving for excellence a little too far by being overzealous with my course choices and trying to do too much. Most days, after getting home by 7 PM, as I sat down to do my homework, I was already dead tired. The packed school schedule, grueling track practice followed by an hour-long rush-hour commute, while also juggling my family responsibilities and out-of-school extracurriculars, took its toll and my grades suffered. Though I continue to aim higher, I’ve learned to not overextend myself. Now, I keep my course load manageable and stick to a schedule with some breathing room.
Truth be told, their only requirement is for me to have a 3.5 GPA or higher by the end of each semester. I am proud to say that I have never neglected to meet this requirement. In addition, my folks are pleased all the AP classes I have taken and how I continue to challenge myself. Suddenly, junior year came so did the ACT. The first time I took the test, I scored a 21. After that, I began to see myself as a 21. In other words, I saw myself as not good enough. The national average on the ACT is 20, so in reality I did just fine. The problem is: I kept comparing myself to the Claire Davis-es of the world. After reading The Overachievers, I realized that other students receiving a high score, does not make mine any lower. I may not have the SAT, but this book still related to me and my test taking abilities. This book reminded me that we are people. We are unique and perfect in our own ways. We are not
For as long as I can remember learning has always intrigued me. I desired to be the best at learning to read in first grade, the best at learning multiplication facts in fourth grade, and the best at learning to titrate acids and bases in eleventh grade. Striving to learn the most has simply become a habit of mine. Throughout high school, my schedule was always filled with honors and AP classes allowing me to learn more and more everyday. After school and practice my nights were spent doing hours of homework to keep up my academic record. The amount of work I put in has paid off as evident by my transcript. I am ranked 6th out of a class of 296 with an over 4.0 gpa. Last year, I received a five on the AP Calculus AB exam and fours on AP Language and Composition and AP Chemistry exams making me an AP Scholar. Thankfully people were not exaggerating when they said hard work reaps rewards. My day in and day out diligence in school that stemmed from a love of learning led to my acceptance into Carnegie Mellon. The interactive intellectual environment draws me toward the prestigious school. I hope to one day graduate from Carnegie Mellon University with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering and to then begin a successful and purposeful career ignited by my
Major changes in my life have affected my high school career, but a large impact came from the death of my father in eighth grade. Before his passing, I was an average A/B student in middle school and even elementary school, which quickly changed in 8th grade when my classes became too hard for me to handle. I decided the best thing for my mental health was to drop out of my higher level classes. This lead to being in standard classes throughout my first year of high school with minimal effort from my part. After constantly missing school, I failed my second quarter. Instead of bouncing back from this, it pushed me down, making me believe I would never be able to recover. Without any motivation, I ended my ninth grade year with a grade point average of 1.4.
I was raised in Nacogdoches, Texas, which is known for its small-town atmosphere and Stephen F. Austin State University. Due to being a small town, Nacogdoches lacked advanced placement courses; therefore, most my time was spent in non-challenging course work. When I attended SFA as a dual-credit student I experienced a minor shock, SFA was a step up from Nacogdoches High School; however, I quickly adapted and worked harder to maintain the pace of my peers. When I finally got accepted to Texas A&M University I again faced the same academic obstacle, and experienced major setbacks and failures. After my first semester of college I received a 2.7 gpa and received my first C in a class. Feelings of defeat and confusion overcame me—my goals of attending medical school appeared to diminish before my eyes. I questioned my work ethic and intelligence. Despite the feelings of failure, I never let myself fall into despair, and I moved forward. Every semester following my first semester at A&M I improved over time; however, the in the Spring 2016 I finally overcame my academic hurdle and made my best grades to date. It has taken time to develop qualitative techniques to retain information for difficult science
I never thought that I would be saving someone life from drowning. That was until my friends and I did help someone. Which was something that happened very fast.
It is also assumed that the act of telling a story can provide insight into past, present and future events (Espinoza, 1997). By going through this process, individuals can find the importance of certain events and assign roles to people who are a part of their story. This act can allow a client to find new meaning and understanding to their reality (Espinoza, 1997). Not only is a
After a very short four years of high school where my college studies had also began, I find myself today attending Wenatchee Valley College. Here in Wenatchee I 'm continuing my college career to obtain my associates in arts and science degree in which will receive in the spring of 2016. Prior to choosing courses at WVC, I kept in mind the pre-med major I have planned to take up, and in result I have taken up a biology sequence; major cells, major plants, and the final series, which I plan to take in the spring, major animals. The remainder of my classes consisted course within the humanities, social sciences and the math departments. Between all the late hours I found myself staying up to study and managing a full time job, I would consider my performance a well-rounded decent one. As expectations for prominent academic achievement were imbedded in me from my family and school faculty in high school,
Throughout my high school years, I´ve managed to maintain good, passing grades through every class I took. The one problem that really did a big change to my transcript is when I moved to a different school back in my freshman year. It would have worked out but there was a problem sending the transcripts and those classes I was enrolled in had failed me. Classes that I have struggled in is in all the math classes. Every year I have taken a math class just for my benefit of me getting better at the subject. Even though they hurt my gpa, I do believe I have gained intelligence in the
There are many people who attend college to obtain a higher education and increase their earning potential. While attending college, there are many scholarships and academic opportunities presented to students that are dependent upon their grade point average. Academic achievement is an important aspect of a college student’s academic career. Many college students spend their academic career searching for the best methods to assist them in obtaining a satisfactory GPA. There are many ways a student could study for their courses, but which method leads them to their end goal?
I was so focused in trying to help my family financially that I did not realize how it was effecting my academics, until my junior year. During my second semester of junior year my overall GPA dropped, bring my anxiety back and turning the tables to me being stressed out. Although my GPA went down I believe that I am just as educated as one of my peers in the same class, I simply did not have the time to sit and memorize what was going to be on the test, causing me to blank out and get low test scores. However, I have requested shorter hours at work to give me time to study and do homework, and i'm confident that my GPA will go up due to the fact that school is my number one priority
Richard was too late. Josephine almost had a heart attack after seeing her husband, Brently, walk through the door. Josephine ran up to her husband and hugged him. She had tears rolling down her eyes but this time it was not tears of joy. Josephine wanted to enjoy the spring time by herself, she wanted her husband gone. She wiped away the tears and faked a smile. Then she said “I thought you were dead, what happened? Are you hurt?” Brently sits down with her and tells her that he missed the train and was staying in a hotel near the train station until the next day. He caught a taxi back home to surprise her with flowers and an 18-karat gold necklace. Josephine put the flowers in a vase and set it on the dining room table, then she walked into the kitchen and pulled out meat and vegetables to prepare dinner. She placed a plate of grilled chicken, mashed potatoes, and corn in front of Brently. Brently had a huge smile on his face because it was his favorite meal and it was the meal they had on their first date in college. Brently tries talking about the day but Josephine sits there in silence. She cleans up after dinner and goes to sleep early. Josephine wakes up in the middle night and starts packing a suitcase. She sneaks out of the house around 5 a.m. to catch a train out of town. She takes three trains and gets on a boat to a secluded island off the west coast. She gets a part-time job at a local restaurant and buys a big house on the beach. The house has a
“I know Mom”, I said as I got out of the car. I walked over to Ben, his siblings, and parents, said hi and gave Ben’s mom his present and went to get my fourwheeler out of my dad’s truck.
