It’s significant how authors use costumes and clothing to show a character’s traits. This is useful to many authors because so many characters have unique traits that can be seen through clothing. In “The cask of amontillado”. Edgar Allen Poe uses this to his advantage. Both of his characters wear cloths to symbolize there traits, Fortunato wearing motley to show how he’s not takin seriously, but Montresor has a more sinister get up. One example of how clothing shows a characters traits is Fortunato. Fortunato is one of the main characters in “The cask of amontillado”. Edgar Allen Poe has him wear motley to show how he’s not taken seriously and to show how he’s a fool. “The man wore motley” he’s wearing a fools outfit, Poe uses this to
Edgar Allen Poe creates an atmosphere of horror/suspense in The Cask of Amontillado by using different types of irony. Poe uses verbal, situational, and dramatic all irony at different times in the story. He uses verbal irony when Montresor is telling Fortunato how he is worried about Fortunato’s health, he uses situational irony when he delays having Montresor kill Fortunato, and he uses dramatic irony when he has the audience know that Montresor want to kill Fortunato but not have Fortunato suspect anything; All together, the use of irony creates an atmosphere of horror/suspense. An example of a time when Poe uses irony is when Montresor toasts to Fortunato’s Health. Poe wrote, “[Fortunato] raised it to his lips with a leer.
In the essay, “Secret Skin: An Essay in Unitard Theory”, American novelist, Michael Chabon, disputes that superheroes utilize their costumes in hopes of ‘concealing’ background knowledge of: who they are, how they obtain their abilities or why they adopted their alter ego (Chabon par. 28). Chabon develops his claim by arguing that people transform instead of escaping reality. Chabon believes that costumes can make a person develop into a stronger, more esteemed version of themselves. His purpose is to emphasize costumes do not keep identities anonymous but are used to display a physical representation of a person’s inner being.
In “The Cask of Amontillado” Poe creates suspense through foreshadowing with words with strong connotations which creates anticipation in the reader. Within the short story there are multiple examples of foreshadowing throughout. The narrator “vowed revenge”(1) on Fortunato, but then further emphasizes his point by stating, “I must not only punish, but punish with impunity” (1). One understands the speaker’s intensity to fulfill his desire, while being unaware of the process. Poe creates a very dark and heavy tone using words with strong connotation. It expresses the passion and commitment within Montresor to complete the deed. From this quotation one can understood that the speaker will release his revenge intensely as the quotation also represents
Fashion reflects the attitudes of a society more than any other art form. Like art, fashion is a material record of the ideals that swayed the nations at the time of their creation. Through examining the styles, and tastes of a particular era, we can realize where the interests and priorities of a time lie. As Frank Parsons wrote in his 1920 study, The Psychology of Dress, "There is surly no better field in which to trace the devious paths of human thought than in that of clothes, where man has ever given free play to self expression, in a way which, thought not always a credit to his intelligence, is yet quite true to his innermost self, whether he will acknowledge it or
Clothing protects, decorates, describes and gives the first impression of a person. It acts as an external symbol of
How characters are dressed can reveal quite a bit about what they are supposed to be like. For instance, Macreedy is almost always seen dressed nicely in a suit and looks put together. This pushes the viewer to see that he is clearly an outsider in the place that he has chosen to visit, because everyone else around him is dressed in a much more casual manner. What is interesting is the fact that Macreedy’s style of dress is also much darker than most of the people around him. Even characters that would be labeled as antagonists are dressed in lighter colored clothes.

Some components of human nature are; revenge, greed, and the will to survive.
Edgar Allen Poe is known for the various literary devices he uses in his works. One of the most famous devices he uses is symbolism. In many of his stories, including “The Masque of the Red Death,” “The Fall of the House of Usher,” “The Tell-Tale Heart,” and “The Cask of Amontillado,” Poe uses symbolism to further develop each story by the messages he writes between the lines. Symbolism is an important aspect of Poe’s many works, seeing as how it allows the readers to make connections within the stories. In “The Cask of Amontillado,” Poe represents symbolism through the title of the short story, the outfit Fortunato wears, and the Montresor family motto and coat of arms.
The people who lived during the Elizabethan Era were not allowed to wear whatever they like or desired. Their Fashion choices had to be followed by a strict law! In conclusion, the way people dress is indeed important. It has been important from the beginning of the ancient times until today. As much as we would like to believe that Hans Christian Andersen’s interpretation of “dress is not what is important,” there is absolutely no way that this is possible for us. We are shallow as a whole. Much like the Emperor was in The Emperor’s New Clothes. Works Cited
