In our competitive world, not everyone has the same opportunity to develop and gain access to resources leading to our career path. For many in the world, individuals are born in an environment or family that has less than others. Pursuing a career in a human relations means helping other individuals to gain access to those resources so they can continue to grow. The goal is to ensure that these individuals are capable of taking that knowledge and independently making something out of their experience. By advocating for clients, counselors will be able to build their self-efficacy and shine light towards many opportunities. To better understand the impact of work environment conditions on life experience, I presented for one of my classes on a specific population to learn more about a group that I was unfamiliar with. My group presentation topic was on foster care college students and their difficulties with the education system. Through my research, it was found that only 10% of foster care will attend college and, of that 10%, only 3% will graduate (Foster Care Facts). One way is to educate one’s self by doing my research on the needs of this population and find evidence based interventions to support them. Through my research I’ve found that mentorships should have positive associations with positive psychosocial and academic outcomes (Thompson, Greeson, & Brunsink , 2016). Rendon (1993) believes that the power of validation play a part, especially students from disadvantage backgrounds, in promoting student success.
