On September 15th, one of my first few days at Townsend Harris, I came to English 1 during Band 7 and when I sat down to look at the board, my first reaction was to be confused. “Founders’ Day: The Track Project” wasn’t a phrase I’d heard of from any friends or upperclassmen. After going through a lesson about the Flushing Remonstrance and it’s relations to the rivalry between Townsend Harris and Peter Stuyvesant, I was reluctant to hear about the project. I’d guessed that it would be a bland and was pleasantly surprised to hear that we would have options. Of these four options, I figured I wouldn’t have the resources or the time to complete the film track (which would likely have to be done outside of school with a camera) and figured journalism …show more content…
These group members were Stephanie Seetoo, JasAndra Acros and Bethany Leung. We figured that there would be the most information if we chose to write about diplomat Townsend Harris (as well as Townsend Harris High School) and unanimously decided that this topic would be the best direction for our track to go into. I privately thought that this “creative writing” piece was going to be very uncreative and so I proposed that we could write from the points of view of different people that were affected by Townsend Harris’s actions. They all thankfully agreed that it would be a more interesting approach. Since a lot of the information for our characters was unknown, I was able to make a lot of creative while still realistic backgrounds to my writing piece. From then on, I had a very positive and optimistic view on the assignment and was eager to work on it and complete it with my group members. The only concern I had at that point was worrying about if my group members would do their fair share of the work. It turns out that an advantage to going to a school like Townsend Harris High School is that pretty much everyone is a good and reliable student in a group project. Together, my group and I created deadlines for our parts to be completed and managed to meet these deadlines easily. The creative aspect really helped me to feel motivated to do …show more content…
I found that when there was a set plan for every day, I had motivation to finish what I was doing because I had a point in mind where I would be able to stop and reward myself by knowing that I was on task and on schedule. There were other groups that were finishing their work on Friday and continuing to work on it even on Saturday but we were able to finish a day early due to our detailed plans and deadlines that we set for ourselves. I found that students at Townsend Harris work hard and get schoolwork done. At my old school, group projects were always a real pain because I would always end up doing all of the work. Here, well at least in my group, everyone did their fair share. In the process of this, I also learned a lot about Townsend Harris as a person as well as how Townsend Harris High School was created. Townsend Harris funded the founding of City College and allowed it to become possible. After City College was closed down by LaGuardia, Townsend Harris High School was founded by alumni of the
My group members were Hailey Looker, Victoria Potter, Kayla Faldet, Ellie Waters, Joe Kastel, and Jesse Kastel. What did not go well was when Jesse, Victoria, and Hailey were arguing with each other. Jesse was arguing about who was going to be each character and the arguments wasted a lot of
My group consisted of four other members-Christy, Daniel, Brian, and Allison. When we were first introduced to the idea of a small group project we knew that our presentation had to entertain the audience, and at the same time inform them. At that point, we were functioning as individuals. Each of us tossed out a ton of ideas and some were shot down right away. That took about 5minutes. Then Daniel mentioned that we can do a parody of the television show Change of Hearts, and it stuck to us like glue. Gradually we began to feed into his revelation, and started to add our personal touches. Each of us became elaborators. For about 15 minutes we took the idea and expanded it to see where it could lead
In the very beginning of the project, I planned to work with Kinzy but ended up combining our group with that of Noah and Nathan’s in the hopes that we would work well together as a group. This did not result as well as hoped, though we got the work done and I was given the chance to act as a peacemaker. As the project launched into action, we first had to decide upon an idea to sell, to which I suggested a few ideas, none of which were chosen. Each member of the group contributed to choosing the right idea for us to push into our target audience. From this point, I began to organize the beginning’s of our project, such as the lab for our scientific portion. Throughout the next week, however, conflicts within my personal life impacted and limited my ability to assist much in the creation and pushing of advertisements. My biggest contribution here was co-writing-and-performing an advertisement over the morning announcements. I then worked to help organize all the tasks we had yet to complete; it was decided that Kinzy and I would be writing the English essay and reviewing the Science Lab, the Byrd’s vice-versa.
They were guys like me it was there first semester and didn’t know what to expect from the class. We agreed to contact each other on canvas because we had a big final project coming up that was worth a lot of points. We split the work evenly and decided to work on it throughout the semester. We all had occasionally forgot to check our messages to see if somebody updated there part. I had got caught up with my other work that I didn’t pay attention to the team I hardly would put anything on the chat. When it came to the day of to present my team informed me that they cut me from the group and that I was on my own for the project. I had communicated poorly so much it got to the point where my team cut me out of the group and had told the teacher and she agreed with the course of action they
Working in a group to achieve a high quality group project can be one of people’s most difficult school experiences. Working in a group is tough because there is often someone who does not pull their own weight. “There are five stages to group development, adjourning, forming, storming, performing, and norming” (John & Wiley pg 166). Christine’s group from the Case Study the Forgotten Group Member is in between the Storming and Norming Stages. The Storming Stage “is dealing with tensions and defining group tasks,” while the Norming Stage is dealing with high emotionality and tension among the group members” (John & Wiley pg. 166). Christine and her group could have had better
The second half of the semester for the database was a roller coaster when it came to the summer seals group project. At the first group meeting, I honestly thought that I will not make it through due to the fact that they were so many documents that I was directed accomplish. My biggest job for the project I had to do was the activity model. Every day, I gave my full power to the best activity model for people to understand. There were times where I did not understand what to do with the activity model, so I immediately emailed my entire group and even my professor to make sure that I am on the right track. My team saw me working my heart out of this section that they took some of their extra time off to see
It is not uncommon for someone in college to have a job, family, exercise ambitions, trying to maintain a social life, all on top of studying for tests and doing homework. Telling yourself that you will just do the assignment in the morning is very unrealistic when you know you should just do it right then and there. This is why picking a specific time to do homework can be beneficial. If you have your whole day planned out then your daily activities are less likely to get in the way of one another. This then leads into my next strategy suggestion which is getting the new student to think about how their schedule will open up more if they just get the task done early on in the week. Just thinking about getting all of your homework done before the weekend can be a really big motivator. According to the last video, The Power of Yet, rewarding “yet” (your goal being accomplished) and the strategy and progress is very important. You can reward yourself in whatever way you see fit for each task. No one wants to sit at home on the weekends and do homework when they could be out spending time with friends or family. Being able to go out and have a social life can be very rewarding to some
As a student of Santa Ana College, I have recently had the privilege to work on a group project. Our group assignment based upon making a postcard for our school. In which this highlights the importance of one of the facilities that Santa Ana College provides for the students. As a group, we choose the Child Care Center as our topic for the postcard. As I worked in the group, I felt respected and valued. I felt that my group volunteered and contributed equally. We decided that two of us would work on the postcard and the other two would work on the essay. As we continued with our project, we divided the work evenly in order to finish on time. My group and I had different tasks in order, and we worked together afterschool
The first thing we did was all gather and make a PowerPoint to gather our information, and put the cites we were using for our information. I found the political cartoon and PSA for the group. We figured to do everything on our own then come back later to see where we were. Somewhere ahead and a couple were somewhere behind. Next we had to make a preview of our topic and what question our research related to. We had some problems because some people were gone and some did not do the there work. So I made the preview for our group and presented it to the class. The next day most of us had our worksheets done but one of us did not so we had to present with 3 instead of 4. I though I contributed to the group because I did my work on time.
The second obstacle was I didn’t think group work in a writing assignment could work well so I decided everyone should write their own story based on a general draft we put up together (however anyone could differ from it) and the writing that gets liked most should
In the beginning, not one of the members was following the group norms we had set. There was a severe lack in communication, and none of the work by majority of the members had been done by the deadlines. For instance, only one of my group members had even completed their peer reviews the night before the final draft was due. My group members stressed me out not only by not completing their work, but also by not even telling my why they had not completed it. This was a major roadblock in editing. Moreover, when my members of the group had done their work, it was very poorly done. There were several grammatical, formatting, writing, fluency, and citation errors. I had to go back in and redo hundreds of issues for over half of my group members for their individual papers, despite my telling them that they needed fixing. It did not help the fact that one of the members of my group spoke English as a second language, and she kept changing back all of the grammatical edits that I had suggested for her paper, insisting that my corrections were wrong. My efforts to support the group in their completion of their essays gave me little time to work on my own individual paper. However, I managed to effectively complete my paper the way I had intended to. My group members were able to contribute to the editing of my paper, but their combined work was substantially less effort than I alone had put into
For a group project, the teacher only gave me and my group a week to do an assignment that would normally take 2 weeks to finish. After he refused to compromise about an extension, my team and I dedicated as much time possible and worked extremely hard to finish. My 3 partners and I met for a total of 20 hours in 3 days. Blocking out time when everyone can meet was also very difficult (One of my team members has a day job on some of the most open days for me).We took one step at a time, making sure no one falls behind and that everyone does their part. Overall, We finished the project and received a good grade on it. I’ve learned a lot about becoming a servant to others and being readily
I am in the group aboriginal rights. Honestly, when I saw I was part of this group I had to look up what the term actually meant. After some personal research to become familiar with the term, I dove in. Our group got to work identifying tasks. There are three members in our group and each member has done an exceptional job putting in key research for the project. I have experience with website design so we agreed I would work on that. Another member of our group was assigned to researching some key sources and has provided us via email with multiple key sources for our topic. The final member gave some suggestions for a focus for our group as well as making some lists to presenting to us. We discussed a focus of our topic as Poor Education
In this engineering class, I learned the design process for products, and how important it is to work as a group and to fulfill each task. There was one time where my group decided to goof off and watch youtube, while I worked on the programming for our marble sorter. Thinking about it now, it was kinda my fault because I did not communicate to them more often. On the next project, we had to design a vehicle that would carry an object to a certain distance, and after that return after someone takes the item off. I took charge in this project, and I assigned both my group members to make a vehicle, while I did the programming. I communicated with my group, and they were able to complete the vehicle. I completed the programming, and when we tested out the vehicle, it was a success. It was then I decided that I wanted to become a computer scientist.
Throughout the course of this class, my group and I had done a lot of research, analyzing, and discussing before the creation of our poster. The day we had learned that we were partners for this project, we all exchanged phone numbers and used a texting group chat as our main way of communication. We much preferred meeting face to face every so often as compared to using Blackboard and when we actually wanted to meet, we often used the library in Gorham. We decided to work mostly independently throughout most of the course, conducting our own research and recording information that we found to be useful eventually. Our group decided not to assign each member a task to do independently, instead, all of our work would be compiled together and
