4. Scenario: You are investigating a homicide involving a victim found dead in his apartment with a single gunshot wound to the head. You discover a suicide note. What key steps would you take to determine this death was truly a suicide and not a murder?
This caught my attention right away and hooked me in. Along with being a topic I was quite interested in (reference to last nonfiction book report), the first two sentences got me wondering. What could be told from a murdered person’s body? I already had a lot of background information from research and watching shows on mystery and homicide but this question led to a million answers. Some answers were cause of death, manner of death. time of death, weapon used, etc, all of which were related because this was sparked from the thought of a dead person and my ideas. From this, I read on to determine what could be told from an expert’s point of view.
Death is an elementary word harboring many meanings. It is the feeling of being caught in the grip of inevitably. It is a personal realization that you too are mortal. It is the recognition that one's life is changed forever. The shiny image of a once bright world full of promise dulls. Unfortunately, every individual will experience the death of a loved one at least once in their life. No words can soothe the agony of losing a loved one. State legislatures are familiar with this grief and have created either a coroner system or a medical examiner system. A coroner system consists of a coroner whose responsible for identifying the decreased body, alerting the family members or anyone of close relation, signing the death certificate and
The purpose of a forensic autopsy is to find out the time of death, the mechanism of death, and the manner of death. The time of death is what led to the death, the mechanism of death refers to anything used to kill the person, and the manner of death is either homicide or suicide.
Standard procedure in violent death cases is to assume, investigate, and exhaust all possibilities of homicide. ”(Belzer R. and Wayne D.)(2012) (pg 222).The scene of the death is teeming with inconsistencies, all of which point toward the possibility of a murder cover up. Any investigator looking into a supposed suicide,
location of death and what that location means to the person dying is more important than the act
The four principles of medical ethics include nonmaleficence, beneficence, autonomy, and justice. These principles were created by Beauchamp and James Childress because they felt these four were the building blocks of people’s morality. Nonmaleficence is to do no harm to others. Beneficence is to care or help others. Autonomy is to respect another’s wishes. These four principles relate to issues surrounding physician-assisted death in many ways. To begin, there are seven individual forms of PAD. They are the following; voluntary passive euthanasia, nonvoluntary passive euthanasia, involuntary passive euthanasia, voluntary active euthanasia, nonvoluntary active euthanasia, involuntary active euthanasia, and physician-assisted suicide. Passive euthanasia is an act in which the health care physician withholds treatment or surgery and the result is the patient’s death. An example of passive euthanasia is a cancer patient refusing treatment and the physician agrees with their decision, therefore the patient dies from the lack of intervention to treat their illness. Active euthanasia is an act in which the health care physician has a direct contact with the patient’s death due to the physician’s act of doing something to the patient in order for them to die. An example of active euthanasia is an injection of potassium chloride. Voluntary is when the patient is requesting assistance to die. Nonvoluntary is when the patient is not requesting assistance and their wishes are unknown
The coroner and medical examiner investigate deaths. They mostly investigate deaths that occur as a result of violence, unexpected sudden death or the deaths that occur due to unclear circumstances. Both of them also assign the cause of death when issuing out the death certificates Both the coroner and medical examiner need to be professional in the manner by which they perform their duties. Any misinterpretation or wrong results may make innocent people end up serving sentences in jails for crimes involving deaths and were probably not involved in the cause.
Aristotle begins to question what is good? The good is explained to differ in different activities and arts, but shares a common ground because it appears to be for the sake of how things are done; a means to an end. Aristotle uses the example of medicine; its mean is to end in health. However, there are many different ends and humans chose some of them, as a means to something else, therefore not all ends are final ones. That which is chosen never as a mean to something else proves to be more final than that which is chosen for itself and something else. Therefore, Aristotle justifies that the mean that is always chosen for itself and not for means of something else is called the final. Aristotle uses this definition and applies it to happiness, since happiness is always chosen as an end in itself and never for the sake of something else. The thought of honor, pleasure and virtue being chosen as an end for itself may apply but can be assumed they lead to happiness as a means to an end.
Edgar Allan Poe is an American poet from the early 1800s who has been regarded in many literary handbooks as “the architect of the modern short story” (Poetry Foundation). Since his death in 1849, Poe has become world renowned for his critical theories as well as his many haunting poems and short stories. But Poe 's work hasn’t always been as popular as it is today. In 1827, Poe published his first collection of poetry, Tamerlane, and Other Poems. Unfortunately, Poe’s first collection was unsuccessful and went virtually unnoticed by the public. Two years later, Poe published a second collection of poetry, which he titled Al Aaraaf, Tamerlane, and Minor Poems. Although this collection received slightly more attention than his first publication, it was still unsuccessful and seen as a failure. Poe’s third publication was released in 1831 and was yet another collection of poetry, ironically entitled Poems. This publication was significantly more successful than its predecessors, and in 1835 its success even landed Poe an editorship at The Southern Literary Messenger, a literary magazine based in Richmond, Virginia. Only a few years later, in 1839, Poe got a job as an editor for Burton’s Gentleman’s Magazine. He stayed with the magazine for about a year before accepting another position in 1841 as the editor of Graham’s Magazine. This was the peak of Poe’s
