Echoes The four pieces of Echo may appear to be immensely unalike on the surface. The narrative that describes a woman, who is looking for her place in the world, may seem absent of what is truly essential in life. The poem and visual art selections may be interpreted as detached with merely similarities in the topics they cover. Although when analyzed as a whole, the four pieces combined present profound thematic messages that prove the power language has in our world. While each demonstrates different angles on the role language plays on our society, they all support the theme that language is what makes us human, and demonstrates the true power it awards us. There are key similarities within the Echoes selections that focus upon …show more content…
Jean-Dominique Bauby, who "was felled by a stroke so destructive that the only part of his body he could move was his left eye", was able to create a way to communicate by blinking letters to produce words and even "proceeded to write his own autobiography" (248). Being unable to communicate brought endless struggles in his life, such as the inability to communicate verbally, but by producing this unique form of language Jean was able to make interpersonal relationships with others and maintain good social health. Although words help maintain good social health, they also assist with generating positive mental health too. Mental health can be enhanced or destroyed by words. We have a choice in words we use to describe the world around us or how we may feel, and if we use words that are attached to negativity it will bring disaster to us. Words such as "Love", which is empathized in Translations by Luke Sagaris, produce positive emotions and generates positive mental health (245). So, without words mental health can become disrupted and can …show more content…
Some people say language has the ability to bring closure and peace to both the living and the deceased. I Am Writing Blindly suggests that letters are able to assist with closure of a traumatic experience. “[T]he last occupants of the Warsaw Ghetto” used letters that contained “poems, thoughts, [and] fragments of lives” to bring serenity to their souls after believing “the Nazis has inherited the earth” (248). In fact language can create a sense of direction to an individual even in their darkest hours. As a result, language can send us in any direction we desire. Our conscious can create negative thoughts that can reduce our ability to overcome daily challenges; but when reading a story or hearing words spoken aloud it can release us from our demons. This is presented by Philippe Beha’s visual art known as Always Together, which shows individuals flying in all directions from a story book. Besides this, language makes up the human race and gives us the potential to create our own success. Also, language has the ability to create potential, regardless of your history. To come from poverty, your view on success can become slim. Belisa in Two Words was given hope when being shown the true power of words and was able to change her future to success with them. Without language we can have a hard time recognizing our true potential, and are not
Language has the power to inform and persuade.A story and a passage may give you the power to do something effective. Language is a strong weapon that is used for and against many people. The article , ”Walking with Living feet,” is a strong brief example of an informative writing .A speech can also be an effective tool used to push people to make a difference at times, for example Elie Wiesel’s speech.
Santiago states “Suddenly, through language, through writing, my grief and my joy could be shared with anyone who would listen” (Baca 154). This quote represents the moment Santiago realized the power of language. He was raised to be a tough guy, and not show too many emotions. He felt no one would listen or even care about what he was going through. Writing became therapeutic for him, and it grew into something he loved. Just like Santiago I also write for therapeutic reasons, and I’ve grown to love it. There’s somethings I’d rather keep to myself than share. I think writing can be just as effective as talking to someone. Whether you’re speaking or writing using language to channel your emotions is important. I don’t think language has to be just words, it can even be art you create. Santiago and Kingston did an excellent job of demonstrating effective coping skills; when placed in an environment you don’t feel ‘free’.
It is hard to know if the possession of language is a gift or a curse to the human race. The novel Fifteen Dogs by André Alexis looks into the answer to this question. Fifteen Dogs is a story about a group of dogs that are given the ability of human language and thought. Two gods, Hermes and Apollo, have a bet to see whether the ability of language creates a better or worse world for the dogs. Initially, the dogs escape from the shelter and begin their new lives, but they soon realize how different a life with language will be. Throughout the novel, Alexis demonstrates that the use of language creates a sense of loneliness and isolation. This sense is shown through the complexity of language, the hierarchy it creates, and the creation of
This is a poem that problematizes ‘language’. “Language plays an altogether fundamental role in human thinking, and it bestows on man his unique ability
The more we understand language variations, the more we will be able to connect with anyone in the world. This mean we all understand social justice in the world. Baldwin says “It goes without saying, that language is also a political instrument, means, and proof of power” (45). This quote is important to our understanding of language variations and social justice because language is power. Language is the most striking key to personality so without it you don't have anything. Meaning without language how would we express ourselves to one another.
Throughout American history a multitude of issues has plagued society that has caused people to feel oppressed and imprisoned within themselves and society. However, through the utilization and expression of language people have been able to find freedom. Writing and reading allows someone to be free for the reason - it creates opportunities for more compassion. Above all, language allows the exploration of different viewpoints which allows a greater audience, or even oneself, to garner a greater understanding of issues such as racism, and sexual orientation, and mental wellness.
The short story “Speech Sounds” is a science fiction story written by Octavia Butler. This essay portrays a central theme that really opened my eyes as well as many others. This theme is to never take your ability to communicate for granted. Communication is a huge part of our culture and civilization. I never truly realized how important communication really was until reading this story. Without it, we cannot express our feelings in a correct manner. Not being able to connect with other individuals results in it being very hard to cooperate with others, causing chaos amongst society. In a short amount of time, the world would turn on each other causing mass amounts of violence. Likewise, this is similar to the story “Speech Sounds.” There are many takeaways one can have after reading this story.
Language is very powerful and can be used in a good, uplifting way or a negative, controlling way. Language is more powerful when used to uplift and inspire. In George Orwell’s book Animal Farm, the animals take over to try to make a better society and life for themselves where the pig rule. One of the leaders of the farm, Napoleon, drives out the other leader, Snowball because he was greedy and power corrupt. Eventually after years of running the farm the pigs turn into how the humans were. They drank, took all the food and never worked. Martin Luther King JR's ‘I have a Dream’ speech and John F. Kennedy’s inaugural speech are more examples of how language can uplift. In the book, Animal Farm, there are many examples about how language
In simple terms, language is commonly defined as the ability to speak to and communicate with others. In reality, the concept of language is far more complex. There are multiple ways in which language can influence the human experience. It allows us to measure empathy, understand the viewpoints of others, listen, and process emotions with the goal of correctly interpreting words and cues from others. Language, however, is an imperfect tool, and although we as humans develop the ability to use and express the same words, we are often unable to control the ways in which others receive the messages that our words are meant to convey. The book Fifteen Dogs illustrates the complexity of language and shows that there are multiple factors that contribute to the way we develop language and communicate with one another. Although each dog is granted human consciousness at the same time, they individually interpret language in their own way based on their experience and perceptions of the new world and the ways in which they form connections with each other and with humans. No dog was better able to communicate with both his peers and with humans than Majnoun. Despite his mastery of language, he struggled to fit in with groups. This essay will argue that Majnoun’s example illustrates the problem of using language alone to ensure effective communication. This will be accomplished by focusing on how Majnoun struggles to understand and feel empathy, the difference between speaking words
In the words of George Orwell, “If thought corrupts language, language can also corrupt thought.” Language has been spoken for over 350,000 years. It has expanded tremendously, but its power has never changed. The use of language shapes peoples' perceptions and the depth of interactions because it can demean, avoid, portray emphasis, persuade, and conceal from simple phrases such as “I feel like” and “just”.
Language is an essential part of forming and conveying social memory. As Mayr (17) notes, “language is used to organize, understand and express our perceptions of the world”. Mayr (17) continues also to say that language is “used to enable us to communicate with other people . . . and to express and understand feelings, attitudes and judgments”. As a result of these two functions, language is one of the main themes in dystopian fiction. Sisk (2) comments
It only takes one word to process the word language in a person’s mind, and that is purely the language that he/she speaks. Language is the immediate translator of communication. Author Thompson Olusegun Ewata writes in his book Business Communication for Academic and professional Purposes that “Language is a vehicle that we use in presenting ideas, thoughts, feelings, opinions to the world” (Ewata 2010). In other words, language is how people share with others all of the information they are processing. Science fiction author Philip K. Dick expands on this relationship between language and communication in his novel The Penultimate Truth, by demonstrating the connections and flow of information from the above-ground and below-ground people.
Everything that we do requires words. Even when we think we create our memories out of words. One reason why we do not remember stuff when we are young is because we don’t have the words to put the information into to store it. Writing is very important because writing means everything, and if we didn 't have writing, we wouldn 't be able to spread ideas. The local and world news are in writing also so we need to be able to read the information. Also directions on how to use something or directions to go somewhere for transportation are also written in words. It is unimaginable how many roles writing plays in our lifestyles and we don’t even think about it.
Toni Morrison makes a good point when, in her acceptance speech upon receiving the Nobel Prize in Literature, she says, “Narrative . . . is . . . one of the principal ways in which we absorb knowledge” (7). The words we use and the way in which we use them is how we, as humans, communicate to each other our thoughts, feelings, and actions and therefore our knowledge of the world and its peoples. Knowledge is power. In this way, our language, too, is powerful.
I scored a 37 on the AACN Essentials Self-Assessment. I know that I have a lot learning to do in the nursing field despite being a nurse for 10 years. Essential II: Basic Organizational and Systems Leadership for Quality Care and Patient Safety is an area where I feel pretty confident in with regards to leadership concepts, skills and decision making. I feel my supervisory skills improved when I became part of the management team at work. Demonstrating leadership and communication skills are important when providing optimal quality care for the patients. I understand and recognize that care not only involves the patient but the interdisciplinary team along with families, communities, and populations. I am not very familiar
