FQ3: How does social media change the way people eat?
Most of the foods on social media are advertise by fast food restaurants, which are unhealthy foods. The survey result shows that 65% of the respondents believe that foods on social media are unhealthy as shown in figure 8. Fast food advertising is most likely be called junk food advertising (Herron, 2014). According to research, University of Sydney reveals that junk food engages young Facebook users to promote unhealthy food which can result to obesity and lifestyle diseases (The University of Sydney, 2014) (Lee, 2014). Research says advertising promotes unhealthy habits, affect children's preference and urging them to eat salty, sugary and greasy foods (Herron, 2014). For instance, fast food restaurants offer chips and drink to answer a survey about their restaurant. In figure 9, 92% of the respondents buy fast food because of advertisements and promotion. Social advertisements affect the way people eat since it encourages people to eat unhealthy food using voucher and answering surveys for a free food. Social media has greatly influenced people in terms of food choices. Some people eat fast food instead of cooking healthy food at home since it is easier to buy than to cook (Herron, 2014). Some food on fast food contains all the calories people need for the day (Fast Food , 2015). About 40% of the respondents eat fast food a few time a week, which could means, that social media is one of influence on food choices for people (Andal, Social Media Advertising, 2017). Social media changes people way of thinking about fast food through those pleasant food visuals. The number one reason that people still eat fast food is the advertisement for food. Advertisements for fast food are all over the place, but advertisements for healthier food is almost nonexistent. Some researchers even suggest that banning fast food advertisements on the television could reduce the amount of overweight children alone by at least eighteen percent. They also say that, “By eliminating the tax deductibility of food advertising costs, the number of overweight children and adolescents would reduce by 7 and 5 percent, respectively.” Another reason of why people still get it is because of the availability of fast food.
Children are targeted in these ads they try to draw their attention by making the ads fun, and by using cool phrases. Moss proposes and “He explained how he would deploy strategic storytelling in the ad campaign for his snack, using a key phrase that had been developed with much calculations:” Eat’ Em Like Junk Food’ (494).This proves that ads plays a role in promoting food that are unhealthy and is putting children 's health at risk for obesity. To sum it up, children are exposed to high amount of unhealthy food advertisements which affects young children health and food choices. Therefore, the government needs to intervene and stopping the advertisement of unhealthy eating and start advertising healthier foods.
Obesity and being overweight are very common worldwide issues around the world, especially in the U.S. There are more than 3 million cases per year. By changing your lifestyle such as diet and exercise, losing weight can seem effortless. Desirable junk/fast food or even irresistible fast food commercials can tempt you to do the unthinkable. We are all victims of this advertising war. Quick-service restaurants (QSR) generate these advertisements in hope to attract more consumers or to increase their popularity rates around town. These commercials bombard our state of mind only to convince us to buy unhealthy food for worthless money. The increase in fast food commercials in the U.S. has led to an increase in both QSR revenues and the obesity rates. Regulating commercial frequencies will lead to a decline in the obesity rate. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry believes obesity “Overweight children are much more likely to become overweight adults unless they adopt and maintain healthier patterns of eating and exercise.” (parag. 1).The causing and treating of obesity is complex but it is the most recognizable disease. Consistently eating fast food and a poor can lead to obesity in anyone. The risks of obesity include an increased risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease. Bright billboards, catchy radio jingles, colorful magazine ads, and eye catching T.V ads play a major role in obesity in the United States. The one dollar double cheeseburger, offered by Burger King and McDonalds is a prime example. Burger King offers more meat with a better taste, and the advertisements are very colorful. Media tends to influence un-natural way of thinking among the average consumer. These ads usually misrepresent images of their target audience, using physically fit looking people in the fast food ads. A large number of these advertisements place a great deal of attention on the foods taste, rather than its nutritional value. This causes the consumer to overlook the risk and pay more attention to the taste and convenience.
