The significance of auteur theory and how it was directly a product of post-war French cinema has shaped film forever. This paper will analyze the beginnings of auteur theory and the theories of François Truffaut and his group of film critics as well as the effects of post-war France had on film. More specifically, this paper will help link the ideas of auteur theory with the works of Jean-Luc Godard, a noted French filmmaker that revolutionized the idea of what an auteur is. To define auteur theory is impossible as it has no set definition. Many of defined and theorized on auteur theory, the results have been assorted. These critics and theorist were not just interested in film, they were displeased with French cinema. Mainly due to the fact that many of these theorists thought French cinema had become watered down and to similar to Hollywood cinema. The idea of the Tradition of Quality changed cinema forever in France. The tradition of quality was theorized by Bazin to be Hollywood films that were usually literary adaptation, musicals, high romance and had high production value. Bazin also was critical of the Hollywood film being to stagey, not dynamic and cinema is importantly about the screenwriter and not the director. Bazin’s call-out towards Hollywood cinema sparked the rebellious nature of French cinema. Bazin called for low-budget filming, contemporary relevance and something that was dynamic. His call-to-arms was answered by young, opportunistic film critics and filmmakers like Jean-Luc
