Throughout The Visit a play written by Friedrich Dürrenmatt the idea of justice is very prevalent. Justice is behavior or treatment that agree with the laws or is just. The purpose of justice is to gain equality and it is most commonly dealt with through the law. Sometimes the idea of justice and the idea of revenge get confused. Revenge is the action of inflicting hurt or harm on someone for an injury suffered at their hands. Revenge and justice compare because they both seek to restore balance. Revenge differs from justice because it is one sided and motivated by self interest, while justice is impartial.

At first the townspeople do not accept what Claire is asking. The mayor immediately turns away Claire’s offer and says “Mrs.Zachanassian, we are still in Europe; we’re not savages yet. In the name of the town of Güllen I reject your offer. In the name of humanity. We would rather be poor than have blood on our hands,” (Dürrenmatt 35). As time goes on the offer becomes increasingly tempting and they convince themselves that Claire has been in a terrible situation of injustice and it is only right to support her. All of the townspeople including the policemen, the mayor, and the priest began to purchase new items on credit, a sign that they are expecting to have more money in the near future. When Alfred confides in the mayor that he is worried that the townspeople have turned against him, the mayor says “God knows the lady’s actions aren’t all that hard to understand. After all, you did bribe two young fellows to commit perjury, and you did condemn a young girl to a life of naked misery,” (Dürrenmatt 53). In this quote, the mayor is expressing that he feels what Claire is asking for is justified. The two quotes from the mayor are completely different.
