Who is that man in a World War 2 Uniform? The person I am writing about is my maternal grandfather, Frank John Jaworek, who I have physically never got the chance to meet. He was born in Illinois in 1919, to John and Catherine Jaworek—who were both born in Poland. They had immigrated over to the USA and had Frank not soon after. Because of them being from Poland, that made my grandfather Polish as well, but legally a US citizen. Through his childhood he did not really get much schooling, as they didn’t get a lot back then, he did attend and get through grammar school in around the 1930s, and he also joined the army. My grandfather became enlisted in World War 2 in 1942, and soon after in 1944 was landing on the beaches of Normandy for the Invasion of Normandy. My grandfather was a part of the 745th tank battalion in WW2; it was one of five tank battalions (all independent) that landed in Normandy on D-Day on June 6, 1944. The 745th battalion had a motto that was, “Our Tracks Lead To Victory” He had a pretty difficult team life, stepping straight into the army at 19 years old. He was a tough kid who knew how to take on life, and so he did.` During the year of 194o, World War 2 had …show more content…
The Allies had prepared for it for a long time, and planned it out specifically. The German’s had only a little idea of an idea of an invasion in the future, but they had no idea where it would be and how it would be done. The German’s didn’t feel as if they were too threatened, but history can tell you that they were very surprised and unprepared when it happened. Hitler, the leader at this time, did not believe that this invasion, known as D-Day, was actually going to be the main battle, the unawareness of the trouble ahead lead to weak German forces. The Allies were aware of the invasion being around French civilians; so they had dropped pamphlets down to warn about the bombardment to help keep as many civilians safe as
In 1944, the United States war effort in Europe was just starting to pick up. Even though the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor occurred just three years prior, the growing power of the Third Reich could not be ignored. During this time, France was already occupied by Nazi Germany and Hitler's war machine was on the path of conquering all of Eurasia. In an attempt to combat this immense threat, the U.S. formulated a plan to engage the German forces through an invasion of Normandy. This bloody offensive would be remembered in infamy as D-Day. Shortly before this violent clash of U.S. and German forces, the inexperienced men of the United States Third Army was given an encouraging and inspiring speech by the four star general George S. Patton.
He had this look on his face like he was trying to remember and after a couple minutes, he answered, “I was born in 1928, and I was lucky compared to some. We were farmers, and while things were tight we came out better than many. God provided what we needed, and after things started looking better he started blessing us with even more.” My grandpa continued to tell me how those first 11 years or so of his life taught him to use everything sparingly, be smart about what you throw away, and if it isn’t broken you don’t need a new one. These lessons he learned during that time didn’t disappear. To this day, he still thinks about it and remembers the tougher times and remembers how bad the world can get. Then, going with the second question I had he continued on about how with the Depression ending there was a new problem to take its place, World War II. At first, he only heard about the war, the U.S. wasn’t that involved, but even so, everyone was working. “Donations were sent, shops needed extra help, anyone who was old enough and able-bodied was waiting for the day they’d be called up. In ‘41, when Pearl Harbor was attacked, that’s when it got bad. The U.S. joined the battle, and local men were going to war. At the time, you had to be 21 to be drafted, but with there having been an attack on U.S. it was lowered to 18. I was 13 or 14 at this time. I didn’t turn 18 until ‘45. By that time we had won, but I still signed up. I was sent to Japan in ‘46, and it was bad.” My grandpa didn’t go much further than that, but he said that every person did what they had to, everyone worked together, everyone supported. He says that he’ll never forget what some of the aftereffects were of the war and that it’s not something you can fall asleep after and just forget. The last event I inquired about was the 1969 Moon landing of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. My grandpa said
He was born during World War I. He herd the old men tell the stories of what happened when they were in World War II. All of his family members went to some war in their life time. His Uncles Guadalcanal, North Africa and the battle of the Bulge, his Cousins stories of Korea. Then finally it was his and his brothers turn, they had joined the marines just in time for the for the Cuban Missile crisis. After that his friends going to Vietnam tasting defeat the only war that America has ever lost. Finally it is his sons turn and he gets the other end of the deal. He doesn’t know if his son will be able to tell him his stories of his war or if he will have to cry at his grave.
D-Day-June 6, 1944 - Led by Eisenhower, over a million troops (the largest invasion force in history) stormed the beaches at Normandy and began the process of re-taking France. The turning point of World War II.
The medal of honor recipient that I am writing about is Henry Johnson. His military rank was private and his service was in World War I in the U.S. Army. He was born in Alexandria, Virginia and received his Medal of Honor in 1918. In the army, Johnson risked his life beyond the call of duty. He served as a member of Company C, the 369th Infantry Regiment, the 93d Infantry Division, and the American Expeditionary Forces. On May 15, 1918, he did combat operations against the enemy on the front of the lines of the Western Front in France. Private Johnson and some other soldiers one day woke up early in the morning to go on sentry duty at the forward outpost then they received surprise attacks from at least twelve German soldiers. When Johnson
With a strong backup, the Allied troops were able to advance through the enemy-occupied countries with lightening speed. Therefore, the attack not only led to the French people’s freedom, but also to the quick downfall of Nazi Germany. (Naval History and Heritage- D-Day, the Normandy Invasion, 6 - 25 June 1944)
Britain and France desperately awaited the moment when the US would fully join in the fighting in Europe during World War II, and D-Day brought that full fledged involvement. If not for the efforts of the United States of America, its cooperation and planning with its allies, the invasion would not have been successful. It was successful, however, due to previous planning, the level of supplies and men from the US combined with the European allies, as well as the divided German forces. D-Day was the beginning of liberation of Western Europe from Nazi control. Hitler had known that in order for the Allies to be successful, there would have to be an invasion of mainland Europe - which his forces controlled most of - and that it would come from northwestern Europe, with Great Britain being the jumping off point. But if he was expecting the attack, why was he not better prepared? The planning that had gone into the invasion at the beaches of Normandy on the coast of France had been thorough and extensive, with a large part of that planning being the intentional disinformation about the location of the invasion, thus fooling the Nazi leader. These factors explain why Operation Overlord was successful, and thus became the turning point in the world war.
June 6th 1944 will be the most important invasion of world war two. The invasion of Normandy, France was the turning point of world war two. In the invasion of D-Day over 425,000 Allied and German troops were either killed or wounded. An examination of primary and secondary sources will reveal the historical importance of this event.
James Hickman was always destined for greatness, but that moment was yet to reveal itself in his future. From age 5 to 7 James life was rocky, he would soon find himself being transferred in and out of4 mental institutions, 5 different group homes, 17 times in detention centers and eventually St. Charles juvenile prison at the age of 13. James recalls one incident where he was given a powerful drug called ‘Thioridazine, Mellaril and other strong drugs in which he couldn’t move, talk, scream or cry “all I could do was lay there and wait for the drugs to wear off.” James Hickman beat the odds for the future that was being laid out in front of him by the system, after severing ties with addiction and homelessness in 1990 thru 1996 James ended up serving time in Iowa State Prison in Fort Madison.
As I stated before, my grandfather was in World War 2 and he really had a lot of things to be responsible for during the war. And pretty much everyone did. So I hear a lot about what your expectations are in war and how to deal with everything and some of the appauling tings that they did. So I can totally relate to these situations from a 3rd person perspective. Being told stories and stories about them from my grandfather is just so interesting and very frieghteing situations he’s been through. And he’s the total opposite from my dad, my dad’s never even shot a gun probably, knowing him no, he’s just a person I would refer to as a “Corporate Slave” someone who works all day and half the night for a big business and he works in a big corporate office at his computer all day, filtering in students for the college he works for. He’s very good at what he does though, I admire him for the serious effort he puts in. and he’s got a very promising position and he works himself tirelessly all the time. Although he does take his anger out on me a lot. And I do get mad, but I always think to myself, he’s doing this because he loves us. And that statement is true. We wouldn’t have the new house we live in right now, we wouldn’t probably have food in our haouse, probably wouldn’t be going to kennedy if he didn’t work. And as for my mom, she works herself too. But yeah, I just wanted to tell of my personal experiences, and I bring family into a lot of this is because family will
D-Day, formally known as Operation Overlord, was one of the many monumental battles of World War 2 (The Reader’s Digest 298). It was led by American general Dwight Eisenhower, who was appointed the commander of the American Allied forces in 1944 (“D-Day”), In order to trick the Germans, the Allies had to put many plans into place before Operation Overlord could actually happen. Before the initial attack on the beaches of Normandy took place, the Allies had many plans to fool the Germans. They took war ships, tied balloons to the back of the ship, and sailed up the coast to another side of France. Trailing the
Nazi’s had occupied France at the time and had taken control. France was part of the allied forces and was under attack by the Nazi’s. As part of the Allied Powers America, Canada, and Great Britain came to the rescue. Dwight Eisenhower was the leader behind this invasion. In December 1943, Eisenhower was put in charge of Operation Overlord – the long waited for attack on mainland Europe. Such an attack would require detailed and meticulous planning which is why Eisenhower was picked to lead this plan by the combined chief of staffs. In excerpts from General Eisenhower’s document the Order of The Day which he gave to the soldiers on D-Day he states In company with our brave Allies and brothers in arms on other fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world. / But this is the year 1944!/The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to victory! I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full victory!(Eisenhower 1944). General Eisenhower explains that the allies should come together, and they will bring forth destruction upon the Germans. He also states that in the document they will force the Nazi’s out of Europe and France will be freed. Eisenhower
My father, a former United States Marine, developed mental, moral, and physical strength through training and in the line of duty. By way of stories in combat and lessons he learned, he empowers me to exemplify, to the full measure, my intentional morale and my tenacious essence as I am confident that it will serve me well throughout my future endeavors. I have witnessed him exude a steadfast pride in his country and in past, present, and future men and women in uniform and it has inspired me to do the same. He was deployed from Camp Lejeune in North Carolina to Kuwait where he contributed to Operation Desert Storm in
The British were not well prepared as the Germans were. The Germans had better weapons and they planned out when and how they were going to defend and attack. This was one of the first wars with trench warfare and also tanks were introduced so a lot of attention and focus was being given by the Germans. While all of this was taking place, the Germans were not as strong in the battle of Verdun. As they saw so many deaths on the first day, they send more and more troops to the battlefield in France. This battle was one of the biggest distractions for the Germans. When the Germans saw that they were more prepared than the others, they tried to take advantage and send more troops to this battle. Which helped France in the battle of Verdun. A Canadian nurse
I am going to talk about my great-grandfather, Steven Biroschik. my grandfather fought in two wars, World War One in 1914 World War Two in 1942.
