A man of many talents and disciplines, Frank Lloyd Wright is arguably one of the most creative architects of the 20th century. Even before he was born, his mother, Anna Lloyd Jones claimed that her child would build beautiful buildings. To prepare for Wright’s arrival, Jones decorated his nursery with engravings of English Cathedrals from periodicals to motivate him as an infant. On June 8, 1867, Lloyd was born in Richland Center, Wisconsin. However, after three years, the family moved to Weymouth Massachusetts because Wright’s Father, William Wright, was a baptist minister who wanted to minster a small congregation.
While living in Weymouth, Jones bought a set of educational blocks designed by Friedrich Wilhelm August Fröbel known as Froebel gifts. Known for the different colors and shapes, Jones hoped that it would spark some kind of creativity in Wright. Fortunately, it did. Wright distinctly remembers playing with the blocks and wrote in his autobiography about it. While living here, William Wright became busy working as a secretary to a Unitarian society and giving music lessons to whoever asked. As a result, Frank Wright rarely saw his father, but they still shared a love for music. Very slowly, William Wright was unable to provide for his family and Jones became unhappy because of this. When Frank Wright was fourteen years old, William Wright and Anna Jones separated. Unfortunately, William was able to sue Jones for lack of physical affection. Once the divorce was finalized, William Wright left Wisconsin and Frank Wright never saw his father again.
