Although science research is important, some innovations can be harmful to society. In the book “Frankenstein”, as the Shelley (2008) suggests that knowledge can sometimes be destructive. In order to prevent pursuit of destructive knowledge, it is important to conduct science research based on ethical principles. This can act as a solution to the constant tension between the utopian vision of science and their possible dystopian effects. Although the book was published over two centuries ago, its concepts are applicable in the modern techno-science culture. Today, the book is often used as a reference to warn scientists against potential consequences that can result from uncontrolled quest of knowledge and dominion over nature. This is reflected in the tale of a scientist, Victor Frankenstein, whose pursuit of scientific knowledge beyond the acceptable human limits created a monster that led to his demise. He wanted to discover the secrets of human life by creating a utopian system that would eliminate diseases from the human frame. Basically, he wanted to renew life so that people would no longer be afraid of death. However, Frankenstein’s ruthless pursuit of knowledge was not guided by social and moral ethics. As a result, his creation was rejected by society. The society subjected the creature prejudice and rejection, which led to a monster that wreaked havoc on humankind (Shelley, 2008). It is important to note that Shelley does not imply that abandonment of science but should be guided by normative ethics. The narrative suggests that it is undesirable and impossible to go back to the idealized state of nature. From the narrative, Shelley suggests that technological innovations can improve human life. Before its existence, the creature was poor, helpless and unable to differentiate anything. All this changed after it was brought into existence. However, even good intentions can be harmful as reflected in the narrative. The creature discovered that fire was a source of warmth and pain and could be used to bring misery into people’s lives. As a result, the creature used fire to harm the De Lacey family after they rejected him. Similarly, the technology developed by Frankenstein provided hope to human existence. However, it was equally destructive to human existence. Therefore, scientists should consider the duality of their knowledge pursuits so as to produce innovations that do not violate normative
