Sunday December 7, 1941 a day that will forever remain in history. The Japanese launched a surprise attack on the naval force located in Pearl Harbor. The Japanese were upset with the United States which led them to attack Pearl Harbor. This was one of the most important events that eventually led to World War two.The attack of Pearl Harbor was one of the most important events that changed U.S. forever. Franklin D. Roosevelt was the 32nd president of the United States who many admired. FDR led the United States through World War two and stood with the nation all throughout the war (history, Pearl Harbor). Roosevelt during this time period ordered restrictions on shipments of oil,metal, and fuel (McNeese, 102). Japan itself made very little oil, not enough for their country to live off of, so as soon as Japan finds out about this restriction on oil they want to take action. Not long from the restrictions the U.S. freezes all Japanese assets in the U.S. because Japan has taken over all of Indochina (Rice, 17). The Japanese couldn't have been more angry with the lost of their oil supplies, things got even worse when the U.S. froze all of Japan's assets in the U.S. Japan sees only two choices to remove troops from China like the U.S. would like them to or to stay at war with China and risk war with the U.S. (Rice,17). Japan of course takes the second option and plans the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. The attack on Pearl Harbor killed two thousand three hundred and eighty eight and wounded about two thousand (Doerr, Pearl Harbor). In a short time period so many people were hurt and many were killed. About half of the deaths caused during this attack were deaths of those on the Arizona ship that was hit with a one thousand seven hundred and sixty pound bomb (World book, Arizona). The number of deaths in the attack was unbelievable and to think that half of those deaths were because of one ship that sunk. The attack sunk or damaged five battleships, three cruisers, three destroyers, thirteen fighters,twenty one scout bombers, forty six patrol planes any many more ships and planes (Streissguth, 40). About twenty one ships and more than three hundred planes were completely lost . The attack caused FDR to request a declaration of war which congress approved, creating the beginning of World War
