Madeline Whittier is a sick seventeen year old girl. She has been sick since she was a baby. She is not able to be outside for she will die. Her mom is trying to protect her from the outside world. She is stuck in her house all day long in her white room, with her white bed, with her white clothing.

Scott overhears Kelly, Julia’s best friend, asking Julia is she finished her book review. The only people that do book reviews is the club that writes the school newspapers. Therefore, Scott decides to join the school newspaper club, so he can try to get closer to Julia, only to learn that Julia was a guest and never actually joined the club. Scott also finds out that Kelly and Julia are planning to join the drama club. By giving Scott another chance to get closer to Julia, he decides to join the drama club. After a horrible performance, Scott joins the stage crew, later to find out that Julia did not even make the cut. After failing twice trying to get closer to Julia, Scott finds out that Julia is running for student council. So again, Scott decided to run too. As usual, Julia does not make student council and Scott does. With piles of homework, a new baby brother on the way, and tons of activities to do Scott is barely getting enough sleep. After learning how hard starting high school was for him, Scott decides to start a survival guide for his upcoming younger brother. Later in the year, a new girl, named Lee, comes to J.P. Zenger High

When it is finally time for Francie to go to school, she gets so thrilled and immediately starts making high expectations for her first year. She anticipates to learn to read and write on the first day, receive her own school supplies, and to become the teacher’s pet. She becomes disillusioned when she enters school, though. It obviously takes weeks to learn to read and write. She only gets one pencil that she must return at the end of the day, and has to share desks with the other lower-class children. She also realizes that only certain people attain the rank of teacher’s pet – the rich schoolgirls. Francie is disappointed upon coming to school, and continues her understanding of prejudice.

One day, Melinda tries to run away from Mr. Neck, and she finds a janitor's closet that hasn't been used in a long time. She thinks it's a perfect hiding spot and she also cleans it up after school. Later that day, Melinda went to a pep rally with Heather ,even though she didn’t want to go. Some girls behind her asks if she the one that called that cops at Kyle Rodgers end-of-the-summer party. At dinner one night, Melinda's parents get on Melinda's back about her grade and that she can do better. After Melinda leaves her parents start to fight. Melinda decides to at least try. She starts focusing in science class. Her science teacher, Ms. Keen, is very smart. So is David Petrakis, Melinda's lab partner. Mr. Stetman, Melinda's algebra teacher, is also very smart, but he can't convince the class why they need to know algebra. Heather joins a group, called the Marthas. The Marthas make Heather decorate the teachers lounge for Thanksgiving. Heather convinces Melinda to help her. When Marthas come into the lounge to see what Heather did, they aren't happy to see Melinda. Heather says Melinda is the first person at school to talk to her. He also overcomes his chronic shyness and approaches a classmate, Patrick, and his stepsister Sam, become two of Charlie's BFFs.
