Fraternity Hazing When most people hear the term "hazing" it brings up images of fraternities, or they just don’t know what it is. In even though hazing occurs in many places including fraternities and sororities, the military, athletic teams and student organizations (marching bands) at both the high school and collegiate levels. Many believe that hazing in fraternities and in general are nothing more than silly tricks and harmless pranks like those from the 1980s hit comedy Animal House. The realities of hazing are severely different than the witty images many people associate with them. Hazing is an abuse of power that can have weakening and life-threatening consequences. Compounding these dynamics in fraternities and other male groups is the desire for the pledge or potential member to "be tough," "stick it out" etc. and prove his manliness rather than risk being known as a wimp or sissy. I reviewed the document from CQ researcher called: Are Fraternities doing enough to stamp out hazing? Edward A. Pease feels that yes fraternities are doing enough, but in his report he states “ Fraternities take an aggressive, three-pronged approach to eradicating hazing in all campus organizations. First, we work to make hazing illegal. Second, we enforce the law and our own policies, which are often more comprehensive in defining and prohibiting unacceptable activities. Finally, we make anti-hazing education a priority and recruit members who will not haze or allow hazing to occur.” He also states “Today, 42 states criminalize hazing” So if so many states have hazing illegal, then why are so many young people dying on a yearly bases due to hazing activities. Each national fraternity has its own anti-hazing policies, which often take a more detailed approach than state law in defining and prohibiting hazing. I don’t feel that each one should have a different policy; they all should follow the same set of guidelines, to make sure that one fraternity does not find a loophole and get away with a hazing activity.
