“When you’re up in life, your friends get to know who you are. When you are down in life, you

get to know who your friends are.”-Anonymous. In the novel Freak the Mighty, Max and Freak

demonstrate a strong friendship. For instance, they were there for each other in the good times and the

bad. A good friendship includes teamwork, trust, and having adventures.

Why does trust help make an enduring friendship? In the book, Max carries Freak on his

shoulders. For this reason, that helps Freak trust Max to carry him, and Max trusts Freak’s navigation.

This helps the two get around faster. Freak has a secret. He is getting a bionic body!

For example, Freak help Max learn to read and write in a way he could understand. Freak also helped

the teachers understand Max. On Christmas, Freak gave Max his dictionary. In the book, they also

stood up for each other, like when Max saved Freak from choking. When they went to the principal,

Freak changed people’s perspective on Max. Together, Max and Freak are Freak the Mighty. They

both compensated for each other’s weaknesses. Working together can build a friendship.

Many friendships are stronger when adventures are had. In the book, Freak and Max have to

face Tony D.. Tony D. threatens Max and Freak, and Freak talks back to Tony D.. Tony D.

chases Max and Freak into the pond and they escape. At night, Max and Freak also rescue Loretta's

purse from the sewer drain. At 3 A.M., they dressed in all black to go to the sewer drain and attach a

hook to the handle. When they return the purse, they learn that Loretta and Iggy, a lady that lives with

Loretta, knew Max’s dad. After being put on probation, Killer Kane kidnaps Max. During the time

Max is forced to be with Killer Kane, Freak has the whole police department looking for Max.
