Friendship “A best friend is someone who you can talk to, who won’t judge you, loves you for you, and most of all, makes you feel like you are worth something.” as said by anonymous. In the novel Freak the Mighty, Max and Kevin demonstrated a strong friendship. In fact, they accepted each other without judgment, and they made each other feel like they belonged. Hence, friendship is important because having a good friend can help you through hard times. Many people agree that trust is needed in a friendship. When Max and Kevin were being chased by Tony D. at the pond, they trusted each other to keep them safe. That is to say, Kevin gave Max directions on where to go, while Max followed and kept them both safe. This is the first time they became Freak the Mighty. Also, they were there for each other in hard times. When Kevin was in the hospital, Max stayed there and watched over him. Similarly, Freak was there for Max to save him, when he was kidnapped. Kevin had a secret and he trusted Max to keep it. It was that Kevin was going to get a bionic body, and no one other than Max knew. After all, Kevin knew it wasn’t real, and he …show more content…
In this case, Max needed help in school, and the teachers didn’t know if he knew what was happening. Therefore, Kevin helped Max by telling the teacher that he isn’t a big public speaker. Kevin also helped Max write, along with giving him his own dictionary to help with his vocabulary. Kevin had trouble moving around, so Max helped him move by carrying him around on his shoulders. However, Max depended on Kevin to tell him where to go, when he wasn’t thinking straight. Freak helped Max by saving him. He helped the police find him and Killer Kane, when Max was kidnapped. After the police found them, he told them about Killer Kane. Kevin, also, sprayed Killer Kane in the face with a spray that he made, so he could scare him off. Many friendships are formed by helping someone in
They become a team against bullies. Throughout this story, they learn the value of teamwork. Kevin and Max are two outcasts that form a team. An example of this is when Tony D. and his gang chase Max and Kevin and they work as a team to get away.
because he is always there for Freek. For example, one day Freak was playing in his backyard and he got his ornithopter stuck in the tree. Max went to Freaks house and got the ornithopter for him (page 12). As well as when Max and Freak go to the fireworks alone. Freak is to short to see the fireworks with everyone standing around him, specifically on page 32 Max says “so I just sort of reach down without thinking and pick up Freak and set him on my shoulders.” This proves that Max can be very thoughtful without even thinking in ways that he doesn’t even know. Lastly, when Freak asks Max to go out at 3 in the morning to go digging in a sewer pipe, Max agrees, even though he doesn’t
Max and Kevin’s friendship made each other stronger in their own ways. For example Freak struggled with his size and how to act around other kids. Freak’s mom, the Fair Gwen, showed her worries toward Kevin’s size as Max narrates on page 20, “...the Fair Gwen grabs Freak and puts him in the wagon and I swear, she almost runs home, like if she dosen’t get away quick something really bad is going to happen”( Philbrick 20). This shows how much the Fair Gwen worried about freak before he became friends with Max. But in the end of the novel the Fair Gwen is trusting Freak because of his friendship with Max. Their friendship also made Max stronger whether it be his reading problems or his insecurity about his height and dad. As Max narrates on page 5,
I can tell that Max is frightened by Tony because when he called them out he tells Freak that Tony has been to court 4 times and has cut someone with a razor and the person he cut almost died. While Max is petrified, Freak
In the book, Freak the Mighty, the author, Rodman Philbrick, states, “‘Identify yourself, earthing. ’”(Philbrick 8). This is the first time Max and Freak ever speak to each other and in the movie this scene never happens. The director chose to change this scene because in the book
In chapter five, Gwen invited Max for dinner, but if she had not, I don’t think Freak and Max would have become good friends. Before they were close friends, Freak came over to Max’s house, but when his mother saw Max, she grabbed Freak and ran home, as Max looked like his father who was a criminal. When he goes to Gwen’s “apology dinner” on page twenty-five, Gwen sees that he is a well-behaved kid and kind to Freak. If she had not realized who he truly was at the dinner, she probably would not have approved of the friendship, and the two would not be as close as they are now.
If we were to judge him solely on his appearance, we might assume that he is just like his father because in photos even Max can see that he looks just like Kenny kane, you might assume that Max is mean but really he doesn’t turn out to be, he is just quiet.. In fact, when we first see him, we see that he doesn't really defend himself from anybody, for example Tony D. we first see Tony d. messing with max in the beginning and Max just stays quiet and doesn’t tell Tony D. off. This shows that he is not one to really ever put up a fight with anybody. Maxwell also shows that he cares for Freak when he tells Freak to slow down on his eating because he doesn’t want Freak to choke. This shows that Max does care for people and isn’t what everyone pegs him to be. However, later we see him yell at his dad on page 128 “I saw you kill her! I saw you kill mom!” in defense for Loretta because his father is choking her. This confirm/refutes our initial judgment by showing that Maxwell is caring, he is not mean to people he is just quiet and he is certainly not like his father because even gram says that Max has his mother’s
In the novel, Freak and Max become like brothers by how they act toward one another as if they are family. Freak states, ‘“We are Freak the Mighty, that’s who we are. We’re nine feet tall, in case you have not noticed’”(Philbrick 40). That statement shows that Freak and Max have a strong bond and they are proud of being friends. Then, Max says, ‘“I swear on the dictionary if Freak ever tries to eat Chop Suey again, I’ll dump it on his head or something”’(Philbrick 87). That statement proves to the reader that Max cares for Freak and will do whatever it takes to protect him. Finally, Max says
Freak was there for Max when
It is unfortunate that throughout the nation, racism has had the power to pose many restrictions on individuals of color. The struggles from discrimination can make any individual’s life difficult. Many readers will analyze Frederick Douglass’s “Learning to Read and Write” and Richard Wright’s “The Library Card” and form an opinion on which one they believe had it worse. Corey James, an EOF student, declares that Frederick Douglass had it far worse than Richard Wright. He believes that if other slaves found out that Douglass knew how to read or write, he could have been killed. On the other hand, if Wright’s co-workers discovered his learning, the worse that could happen to him was that he would loose his job. Corey James makes a valid point; however, I do not completely agree with him. Both
Freak isn't just teaching Max about reading and science, he becomes like a light to help Max from the down under also, helping him face the past and being the brains in the operation when they fight crime. Like in every story there's a antagonist, moreover in this one it's Killer Kane mainly known as Max's father Kenny. He killed Max’s mom and denied it also, he kidnapped Max. The large annoying thing getting in the way of Max’s development or young
Don’t be afraid to choose your own way, it may result in a brilliant idea. Some people may believe because whether or not you’re wrong or right you can decide what is best for you, and in these two stories “Choices” by Susan Kerslake and “Forgiveness and Families” by Shirley Jackson both have one main idea involving the strength within you and the choices you choose to make with that. The two main characters that some people believe are similar would be Peggy from “Choices” and Cam from “Forgiveness and Families”. Some things that Peggy and Cam have in common would be they both made a bad choice. The narrator describing Peggy’s thoughts said “Should she die tomorrow, some else could deal with a dirty sink” (Kerslake 118) but who truly knows
but she’s afraid of Iggy. This shows that Iggy and Loretta let Max and Freak was a tough guy until he found out that max’s dad is killer Kane and Loretta Lee is ank go,because of max’s dad. This shows that Iggy and Loretta are really scared of him that’s why they let both go because he doesn’t want to get into trouble when he gets out of jail. However we later see them after christmas
At the beginning of the novel, Max got Kevin’s ornithopter out of a tree. This act of kindness resulted in Kevin making a friend that he would never regret making. Max also helped Kevin when he called for a nurse when Kevin started coughing up his food. Max had warned Kevin to not eat so fast, but Kevin continued to do so. Even then he still kept his eye on Kevin, which signaled true friendship.
The character maxwell kane is first described as “Im not big,”i say.”thin way your like two feet taller than me.” In fact, when we first see him, “I invented games like kick-boxing and kick-face and kick-teachers and kick-the-other-little-day-care-critters” (page 22). “Called kicker for a time-this was day care, the year gram and grim took me over-and i had a thing about booting anyone who dares to touch me” (page 1).Then when max meets kevin (freak) and max is caring about kevin.max states “and so i just sort of reach down without thinking and i pick up freak and set him on my shoulders.” this shows
