Literary Analysis
In the “Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass”, Douglass describes the trials and tribulations of a slave during slavery. However, Douglass does not just tell his life story giving every detail. Instead Douglass chose specific events in his life that shined a light on the side of slavery few consider. Douglass used his life story to illustrate that slavery was detrimental to every soul involved, from the slave under the whip, to the owner swinging the whip, and the entire population.
Douglass begins his narrative at the beginning. Describing how he was ripped from his mother’s arms before he could form a memory of her, and that he never knew who his father was. However, his father was thought to also be his owner. In …show more content…

Then forcing your own flesh and blood, to work under the skin ripping lash of a whip. Or, actioning that child off to the highest bidder. Could you imagine a world in which you could allow someone to treat your flesh and blood in this manner? Slavery made this seemingly barbaric behavior, a normal everyday way of life. While today this behavior toward anyone would warrant serous jail time. Slavery twists and warps the soul, regardless of its purity or well intent. Turning a once sweet and caring person, that treated all people with basic kindness. Into a harsh and cruel demon, ready to inflict anguish on those they felt beneath them. Giving slaves less worth than the dirt beneath their feet. With less intelligence than an animal. Slavery caused this great travesty to the world. Twisting the soul of the purist of people. Putting a mark on the soul that nothing could take off. Slavery not only affected the individuals involved (owner/slave), it also affected the entire population. Without slavery, the north seemed to prosper, and everyone was treated with a basic decency. Even the poorest of the citizens had basic necessities. While slavery, seemed to strip those in the south of basic rights, and necessities. Leaving the buildings in disarray, and its poor displayed everywhere the eye can see. Douglass was displaying the ugly footprint of slavery on society. While also showing slavery’s inevitable effect on both the slave, and the owner. Twisting everything it touches. In displaying specific hardships of his life, Douglass illustrated slavery’s corrupting, and unscrupulous character. Illustrating no person can withstand slaver’s cruel reach. No soul is to pure to be twisted.
