Majority of her work is to inform us of the past and she wants us to learn from her experiences in life; she is a life teacher. The purpose of this poem was to inform us of the history of our country. The poem is titled “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings” and her purpose of writing this is to teach the reader why the caged bird sings. Maya Angelou wants to put the reader in her shoes to get the ultimate experience of racial inequality but instead by taking the role of a caged bird or a free bird.

The purpose of this paper is to introduce, discuss, and analyze the novel I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou. Specifically it will discuss the themes of racism and segregation, and how these strong themes are woven throughout this moving autobiography. Maya Angelou recounts the story of her early life, including the racism and segregation she experiences throughout her formative years. With wit, sincerity, and remarkable talent, Angelou portrays racism as a product of ignorance and prejudice. However, she finds the strength to rise above this crippling condition.

The memoir I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is an autobiography written by Maya Angelou as she grew up in the mid-20th century, where being a black girl and facing racial issues in society, had to overcome many problems that show the larger issue of the time period. As the caged bird is the symbol of the African American race during that time, both have similar and different meanings in their responses.

For my concert report, I chose to attend a University Chambers Players performance. Within this classical genre of music, the pieces performed were all homophonic in texture and each melody introduced was supported by chordal accompaniment. All of the pieces performed ranged from an eighteenth to twentieth century time period, and furthermore, each performance employed the use of western world instruments, such as the piano, cello, violin, and viola.

From a young age, Maya witnessed the first-hand effects of racism in the South for blacks growing up alongside her brother, Bailey. In the novel, Angelou faces racial discrimination and displacement inside and outside her own community that act as metaphorical cages barring her from the freedom to be her true self.

The concert I attended was performed by the Brooklyn College Wind Ensemble conducted by Jeff W. Ball on March 1, 2016. The Midwood High School Band, conducted by Melissa Williams, performed as special guests. Before going to the concert, I looked up Wind Ensemble so I’d know what to expect. A Wind Ensemble consists only of wind, brass, and percussion instruments. My concert experience was enjoyable as I went in knowing what the Wind Ensemble is, and went in with an open mind.

This book explores racism, sexism, insecurity, poverty, and abuse Maya Angelou started to fight back and become stronger than she was when the book previously began. She is a strong black African-American woman who teaches women about the poverty, hard-times slavery how black people where treated, we were treated unequally whites were overruling us we had to take orders from them.

On October 2, 2015, I attended the Viola Quintets concert. The performance contained two violinists, two violaists, and a cellist The concert began at 7:00 pm and ended around 8:10 pm. Furthermore, it was located in the Farrell Auditorium, which is in the Saint Louis Art Museum. At this concert, I listened to professional musicians that are a part of the St. Louis Symphony perform music that was composed by Felix Mendelssohn. Felix Mendelssohn’s String Quintet No. 1 in A Major, Op. 18, and String Quintet No. 2 in B- Flat Major, Op. 87 are the two pieces the musicians played. Furthermore, these pieces are absolute music, symphonies, and have a romantic style.

On April 11th, I went to the Faculty Artist Series at Wiedemann Hall here on campus. This concert was composed by Walter Mays, Dean Roush, and Aleksander Sternfeld-Dunn. Prior to the concert, I was expecting to hear something like the psychedelic and futuristic music we were shown with the Martin Luther “Dream” piece, but man was I very wrong in what I was expecting. The concert hall we were in had the feel of a church and was a place where I felt like I had to be quiet and on my best behavior which is something that I hadn’t seen at a concert besides my elementary school Christmas recitals that were in a church. Other than that, the music wasn’t the greatest or most pleasing music I have ever heard, but I will note that the drums sounded awesome

Along her numerous struggles, various people have given her positive guidance and passed down their knowledge to her. Among these people was Mrs. Bertha Flowers, a person in which Maya respected greatly. She was a dignified person that Maya could strive to achieve the gratitude that Mrs. Flowers gave to the people around her, a sense of appreciation.
