In each of the major sports leagues (NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA), free agency is usually a period of big spending, crazy contracts and fresh looks to some teams. With the drastic rise in the salary cap, NBA free agency has been no different this summer. The contracts NBA players have received, compared to those given to some of the star players in other major sports, have been amazing.

Without a doubt, the biggest free agency decision was Kevin Durant’s. He’s a top three player in the league, and would instantly make any team he joined a contender for a championship. Joining the 73-win Golden State Warriors sure looked like he was taking the easy way, and perhaps he was. Or, perhaps it was simply the best decision for KD. Regardless, his decision begs the question: Is talent distribution in the league is becoming too polarized?

The NBA has always been a star-driven league. The league is probably the easiest to form a concrete list of the top players of all time. Players like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird were all superstars, who are widely accepted as some of the best to ever play.

Recently though, the league has trended toward the formation of “super teams”. Recent history of the super team started with the new-look big three Boston Celtics, constructed in the summer of 2007. Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen joined Paul Pierce in Boston, and less than a year later, the trio were NBA champions. Then, in 2010, LeBron James made the decision to take his talents to South Beach, along with Chris Bosh, joining Dwyane Wade to fashion their own super team. Other teams have tried to use the same formula and failed, most notably the 2012-13 Los Angeles Lakers that had Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, Dwight Howard and Steve Nash. If you look at the other major sports, there’s always more than a handful of contenders in any given season. Looking ahead to the upcoming NFL season, the Seattle Seahawks, Green Bay Packers, New England Patriots, Carolina Panthers and Pittsburgh Steelers should all be solid contenders. There’s a plethora of talent spread throughout those teams, and there are always dark horse teams in the NFL that defy expectations. The MLB just passed its All-Star break, and there are no heavy favorites to take the 2016 World Series the fall. The San Francisco Giants, Chicago Cubs, Washington Nationals, Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles, Texas Rangers and Cleveland Indians are all realistic contenders, and who knows which teams will make runs over the last couple months of the
