Religion 120 has taught me something more than just the meaning of religion. I would argue that I will be taking away more knowledge from this class than any other class I have taken so far in my college career. The learning path Professor Robert takes has benefited me throughout the semester. The learning path I took persuaded me to open my mind and absorb and understand the ideas of other individuals. After I opened my mind up and read all of the content we were assigned in class, along with listened to my classmates and professor Robert’s take on religion, I was able to picture religion as something other than just the physical place of worship and discussions taken place there. When most individuals think of religion they think about going to church and not much else. Religion is so much more than just the physical place and the individuals leading the practice. Religion has the potential to help guide you in life, along with giving you a sense of meaning in this big world. Religion has the power to help you connect with individuals like yourself,

The Mormon faith dates back to the year 1830 when Joseph Smith, the founder along with 5 other men gathered together to form what they initially called The Church of Christ. This was later changed to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Mormonism was founded in the 1820s’ by Joseph Smith. Smith, wanting to expand his religious following migrated to Illinois where he established a settlement that included a temple of worship and a village (Green 57). In Illinois the Mormon peoples’ were met with threats, violence, and occasionally they were even killed. This was the case for their leader Joseph Smith; Smith was met with disgust from non-mormons when he attempted to run for presidency and his church riddled with scandal when the word of polygamy got out. With his tarnished reputation, Smith was ultimately murdered by an outraged mob, who then threatened other Mormons that if they did not leave they would be met with the same fate (Mormons into the West). With that warning, the Mormons picked a new leader, Brigham Young, who wanted to flee the American Border. Young set for travel with his new followers to the Great Salt Lake, which at the time was located in Mexico.

Mormonism is a religion created by Joseph Smith on April 6, 1830(The Mormon Trail), its believers are referred to as Mormons and practice the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS Church) (The Mormon Trail). Smith believed himself to be a prophet destined to “restore the original pure church the Christians in the Book of Mormon had created (Manifest Destiny and Westward Expansion).” However, he was killed by a mob in Illinois but was replaced by his successor, Brigham Young. Their beliefs include a particular set of deity, afterlife, and they practice polygamy, which is one of the reasons the Mormons sought religious freedom.

Mormons Moving to Salt Lake City During the nineteenth century there were many different types of people moving west over America. One of these groups was the religious group, the Mormons. The religion was originally founded by Joseph Smith in the early nineteenth century. He first started of with very few followers but quickly many people started to come round to Smiths way of thinking. After developing the religion in Palmyra, Joseph Smith and his followers moved to Kirtland.

In recent discussions of racism, one issue has been racial and religious profiling. On one hand some argue that these actions are necessary to protect the American people from both foreign and domestic threats. From this perspective, people of color are un-equal to everybody else and people such as Muslims are probably connected to groups such as the Islamic State. On the other hand, racial and religious profiling is considered completely immoral and wrong because it takes away liberties. This leads to a conflict between safety and liberty. My own view is that racial and religious profiling is immoral to an extent; however, I also believe that Americans should be protected. Joseph Smith, who had much curiosity in religion, and what was real and what was made up, founded the religion. He claimed that Jesus Christ and God himself visited him and that they told him, .all denominations have strayed from the truth and that he should not join any of them. After that event, he didn’t think much of it and moved on through his life. Once he told his father of his vision, he was scorned, and went to seek forgiveness. When praying for his sins to be relinquished he received a vision by the angel named Moroni, who spoke of a book written on gold plates and buried in a nearby hillside. We walk around the United States terrified today of people of Middle Eastern descent because we’ve associated them and their religion with terrorism. We need to be reminded that a person’s race and religion does not make them a terrorist. Their actions make them a terrorist. A white, Catholic American could just as easily cause mass terror as anyone other person in this world, but we neglect to accept that fact because of the fear that has been instilled in us by groups like ISIS who have completely ruined an entire religion and race’s reputation.

The Mormon religion first came to light in the early 1800s, in the northeastern United States. The Second Great Awakening provided the perfect religious atmosphere for new religious dogma. Furthermore, this new religion offered fresh perspective and ideals; which helped to further alienate its followers from mainstream gospel. Faced with extreme prejudice from Protestants, it wasn 't until the Mormons fled west that their religious prerogative flourished. The hyper-emotional state of affairs originating from the Second Great Awakening resulted in religious turbulence which served as the foundation for Mormonism whose continued development and survival directly correlated to westward expansion and the freedoms of the West.

Mormonism is a multilayered religious organization with many faces. The words “multilayered” and “organization” are carefully chosen as they represent the bulk of what we will discuss as we seek to unveil the true essence of the Mormon world as they see it. We will summarize this organization and in so doing we will discover that it was built on human fallacy and deception from its inception. We will then follow with a critical look the claims, doctrines, and documents that frame their beliefs.

The documentary explores both the history and the present reality of the Mormon faith, allowing the viewer inside the compelling and often misunderstood religion. There are many situations where I felt myself and others were treated unfairly; However, I’m going to share the one that struck out to me the most. Growing up, I was raised in a Christian background, specifically Methodist. Even though I respect the views of those who are not Christian, unfortunately not all Christians do that. Some Christians use their Christianity to judge those who are not living up to their expectations or those who are not righteous in their eyes. I experienced it myself because I was in a situation where other Christians were castigating me.

Religion is the prominent key source that has brought people together conforming around one solid belief of God’s plan. Throughout history, different paths of religions have taken course and formed different segways of beliefs and followed the words of the bible in different ways. Any religion has brought peace to people, keeping their trust around faith worshiping of a superhuman with power. My family and friends have helped shape my religion towards the Catholic church, even if the older generations in the family have gone different directions, such as, methodist or lutheran. Overall, even with different religions and practices of church in my family, I have allowed myself to keep an open mind with studying religions, even if mine is solely catholic. Altogether, my family and I have allowed ourselves to be overall christians and believe in the higher power.

Adherents of all the world’s major faiths believe that their respective religions had a starring role in the very creation of mankind. Luckily, it is unnecessary to verify any such claims to realize that those very religions have played a major role in shaping mankind throughout history. Be it as a tool through which to consolidate and administer power in the case of the Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt, a call to arms to conquer the Iberian Peninsula and the storied Eastern Roman Empire in the case of the Caliphs of Islam, and as a force that brought together people from different classes, languages, and countries in the case of the Holy Crusades launched by the Roman Catholic Popes.
