Women and men are different in an abundance of ways. Not only are they physically different, but also mentally. It wasn’t until the early nineteen hundreds that women were finally considered as their own person, instead of just housewives. I believe women were not given the appreciation and value which they deserved. When they were finally viewed as more, they expressed themselves best through writing. Men also express themselves through writing; however, there is a discrepancy between women and men in the way they display their themes. Women writers often write about their internal battle. Men, on the other hand, often express aggression towards nature, god, and other people. For example, in Ralph Waldo Emerson’s essay “Nature,” he demonstrates the relationship between nature and man. He stated, “In the woods, we return to reason and faith. There I feel nothing can befall me in the life- no disgrace, no calamity, which nature cannot repair.” He showed that nature can help the soul. Another example of men’s writing is in Ambrose …show more content…
During the time period of these stories, women were fighting for recognition. They were portrayed as housewives and not anything greater than that. In “The Yellow Wallpaper,” the woman narrator was tired of being locked up in her room. She would write, although she was told not to, just to go against her husband’s will. At the end of the story, the writer reveals that the woman she is seeing stuck behind the ugly wallpaper is actually herself. When she tears off the wallpaper, she finally feels free. This sent a message to women to be yourself and to not let others define you. This is also portrayed in the “Story of an Hour.” The narrator in the story repeats the word free when she learns of her husband’s “death.” She felt joyous after his passing, as if she could finally live her own life independently. These stories both show the oppression women feel from
In the short stories “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin and “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, are stories about women who suffer from different conditions, but are very similar. In “The Story of an Hour” the main character suffers from an unknown heart condition, and becomes very detached from her husband. In “The Yellow Wallpaper” the main character suffers from a psychological condition, and is taken care of by her husband John but slowly grows away from his care. While these women may have very different situations, they are very similar in the way they grow away from their husbands, feeling oppressed by society, and wanting to feel free.
"These writers explore both the social roles that confine them and the bodies that represent the confinement". In light of this quotation, compare how the writers explore gender.

While the women are struggling with the oppression from, society and their husbands, they also have to face internal struggles. The woman in “The Yellow Wallpaper” struggles with writing in secret, and being trapped in the room. When she saw him all of her hopes and dreams she had just spent the past hour on were ripped out from underneath her.
The story "The Yellow Wallpaper," by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, is a story about control. In the late 1800's, women were looked upon as having no effect on society other than bearing children and keeping house. It was difficult for women to express themselves in a world dominated by males. The men held the jobs, the men held the knowledge, the men held the key to the lock known as society . . . or so they thought. The narrator in "The Wallpaper" is under this kind of control from her husband, John. Although most readers believe this story is about a woman who goes insane, it is actually about a woman’s quest for control of her life.
The Story “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is a great expression of women’s oppression in the 19th century. The story introduces readers to a woman frustrating in her life and suffering from a nervous depression and her marriage as the yellow wallpaper is causing her a real insanity. Having a background about the timing and the setting that the story is written in helps the reader to internalize the whole meaning of the story and understand its important details. The story is told by a narrator using an anxious tone, and she is being angry and sarcastic at the same time. The woman mentions that her husband has taken her to a summer vacation. So, the story takes
Not so long ago, there was a time that men 's dominance and superiority over women was the social norm. Men were the accepted authorities in any relationship and held all the say. In the two stories, "The Yellow Wallpaper", and "Desiree 's Baby", the female protagonists are portrayed as weak characters who are heavily dependent on their husbands for everything. Without the men in their lives, the women would be essentially helpless. But the authors of these two stores were nothing like their characters. They were both strong-willed women who had a voice of their own and wanted to make sure it was heard. Thus, both authors used these stories to give feminism a voice.

"The Yellow Wallpaper" and "The Story of an Hour" are two very similar stories. Both deal with middle-aged women who long to attain their freedom. They share the same theme, but convey the message differently in terms of style and quality. The two stories are about women who are fighting for freedom, happiness, and the ability to be truly expressive in any way possible.
A common theme in both stories “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and “No Name Woman” by Maxine Hong Kingston is sexism and how some women struggle to find voices in chauvinist societies. The narrator in “The Yellow Wallpaper” has a husband that is very controlling and she must fight against the rigid role of housewife imposed upon her. In “No Name Woman” the narrator describes her aunt who is severely punished by her village for being impregnated by a mysterious man. Both stories demonstrate struggles that are exclusive to women, while illuminating the destruction that occurs to these women because of the oppression they receive from men. The women in the stories suffered because of their sexist societies. Thus these stories
Whether a story is fictional or not there’s a significance to the author or anything that could relate to today’s society of life, back in time, or it’s a story written to entertain the reader. Some authors write stories to tell the reader how one must look deeper into their story to be able to interpret their story to fully comprehend and to realize how the author is trying to make a point. After reading “The Yellow Wallpaper” the reader could stat that it is a fictional story that is somehow linked to the author’s life, and how women were treated back then. Simply reading the title, “The Yellow Wallpaper” one could say that it does not seem like if it’s going to tell readers about an
When we compare contrast the two stories "The Yellow Wallpaper" vs. "The Story of an Hour”. If we first look at the similarities that they have, they are both about women who are controlled by their husbands, and who desired freedom. But both women had different reasons for their freedom. It sounds as though both husbands had control over their lives and both women had an illness. But I don’t believe the husbands knew their wives were so miserable. So as we look at the lives of women back in the 19th century time they have the stereotypical trend of being a house wife, staying at home taking care of kids, the house, and aiding the husband in his work. Being in charge of the household makes women have many responsibilities to take care of
In these two stories you see both women breaking out of the standards of society. The woman in “The Yellow Wallpaper” is shown trying to break free of the belittlement and insanity. In these two stories they are both trying to escape their husband’s control. The se two stories take place in the mid to late 1800’s.
Since the beginning of time women have been considered the inferior sex. Woman have been stereotyped as housewives and mothers. Woman today don’t suffer the injustices that the generations of woman before us have. Today we are equals, working alongside men. We are no longer trapped in the house cooking, cleaning and tending to the children. The female main characters in both the Yellow Wallpaper and The Story of an Hour both feel trapped and controlled, but deal with deal with their situations and obtained their freedom very differently.
Women writers, this is to say, have been treated differently from men because they were women; and this has affected how they developed.
