Freshman Composition (EN101) is the first college course I have taken, it has certainly been one of the most challenging courses I have encountered. Initially, I was not going to enroll in EN101, figuring I did not have the skill set for this course; in fact, I was surprised by my growth and accomplishments in this course. While this course focuses on the transition from high school level writing to college level writing, my goal was to enhance the quality of my writing and to prepare myself for future courses. I can take the knowledge and skills I have obtained and use it for all my future courses as well. Also, these are life long skills that I will be able to utilize for any occasion in my future.
When I arrived here at college I was extremely disappointed with the selection of food here in the cafeteria. I frequently found myself eating only hamburgers and pizza over and over again, simply because I did not like the other choices. About four months into the school year I had do go to the doctor for a virus and when the nurse weighed me I was a little surprised by what I saw. I had gained a little over ten pounds, close enough to what some refer to as the “Freshman 15.” It is a common fear among college students that they are going to gain fifteen pounds during the course of adjusting to college life. However experts have stated that the idea of the so called “Freshman 15,” is not that accurate. Every college student is obviously
James Mason Wood said, “Education today, more than ever before, must see clearly the dual objectives: education for living and education for making a living.” When people go to school because they have to, then it is only education for living. When people try hard and get a good education, then they get good jobs to make a living. West Texas A&M University, home of the Buffaloes, will provide me with new skills to learn about the medical field and can assist me to become an anesthesiologist.
Composition 1, also known as English 101 or FYC (First Year Composition) is an entry-level course taken by a majority of college students to introduce them to college-level reading and writing. FYC is a prerequisite course at many colleges and universities and therefore must be taken before students can enter into courses specific to their major. Though FYC serves as a bridge to college-level reading and writing many students and even some compositionists (those who teach writing in a college or university) do not see the relevancy of the course and instead view FYC as a course with very little applicability within the majors and future careers of college students. Others, including Nathalie Singh-Corcoran, believe FYC is a crucial prerequisite course that does teach skills crucial to the futures and lives of college students. In her essay, Composition as a Write of Passage, Nathalie Singh-Corcoran first, speaks to the purpose and overall goals of an FYC course before explaining how the skills learned in FYC can actually be applied to the majors and future careers of college students. From the very beginning of her article, Singh-Corcoran establishes a strong foundation from which she can reach her main audience, but, she fails to support her main points in the best possible way by a very sparse use of non-anecdotal or personal experience based evidence.
As the Fall 2017 term comes to end, I look back on what I have accomplished in this class. English 102 – Composition II was one of the most challenging and toughest class I have taken at UW-Stout, but feel as though it has helped me to improve my writing skills. Even before the semester started the feeling of anxiety had taken over, as writing has never been my strongest skill, but stayed positive and confident I would be successful. Much to my surprise, my instructor, Michael Critchfield quickly addressed that this class would not be easy and amazingly changed my views of writing throughout the entire semester.
A semester has passed since I started college and my journey of becoming a better writer. It has been a very important semester for my future college career, and I would not be here without the things I have accomplished. The composition program has really helped me to prepare for what college writing is all about. Now standing here and looking back I could not imagine how it would be without that class. I believe my English, and my writing is better than it has ever been, and all thanks to the composition program.
The first quarter is always the hardest for me, this one especially as I work a lot after school. Being senior year I was looking to take an easy route, but instead I took hard classes to keep challenging myself; looking back now I should have taken the easy route. The biggest struggle has been finding time to work in homework after work, getting my work in on time, and I’m looking to improve my quality of work for the next quarter.
Coming into the 3D program, I was none too excited about taking any general studies classes, including freshman composition. English class has always been the one class I have always had a disdain for. In high school, English was all about reading literature and being told to write several pages on a topic seemingly unrelated without any direction to guide us. Upon coming to Freshman Composition, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the class was nothing like those classes. I feel as if I have learned many things and developed greatly as a writer throughout these last months shown in this portfolio. The main improvements of mine consist of my ability to manage time, my ability to structure paragraphs, and my ability to improve my papers through my own writing process.
Starting off with what I have learned, how I think the class will be and what goals it will take to have success during freshmen composition. First day of class what I have learned is using the correct format of MLA writing style, what goes into each sentence in a paragraph. Expanding my vocabulary learning what the word metacognition means to think about writing. The 9 steps it takes to follow the correct format of having a successful paper. Freshmen composition I expect the class to be very challenging and difficult for me. Writing papers and reading everyday is something I do not excel during my normal days which leads freshmen composition being difficult and challenging for me. I do expect me becoming a better reading and writing during
I entered this class with a general idea of what was going to be expected of me and what I was going to have to accomplish in order to be successful, and I credit the extent of my preparation for this course to the extensive instruction and critiques provided for me by my high school teachers. By them I was taught the fundamentals of composition which allowed me the time and energy to more deeply understand the intricacies of good writing which I would be taught in college. Although I learned many new concepts in English 101, I feel as though I had a stable foundation to build on and enhance with more refined skills.
MORGANTOWN, W.Va.--Every year players come and go, giving newcomers a chance to contribute and that is no different in Morgantown.
As much as I am not enthused about having to write essays, English class and writing has always come very easy to me. Freshman year was relatively easy, mainly because the teachers took their time to thoroughly teach their students on how to become exceptional writers and formally put a paper together. There were three essays that year, a research essay over environmental problems in the U.S., an argumentative essay, and a personal essay. It was obvious that they really wanted the research paper to be the top priority, with spending about two whole months putting together one paper.
Axel sat on Petra’s right, with Kamryn to his left. They scanned data on Valerie Parker’s credit accounts for the past five years. A pattern emerged over time; small regular payments made to a company in Dome 2 called U-Stor-It, which showed multiple owners, the current one named Gemini Storage. They exchanged knowing smiles. The current business name was a red flag. The property schematics displayed a sizable storage warehouse.
Enrolling in College Composition was a big step toward completing the only part of college I feared. This emotion is brought on by the previous check the block educators I dealt with growing up who didn’t want to educate. Instead, they just wanted to finish the semester completing only the minimum requirements to push students through. As for this course, it’s a fast-paced eight weeks that is instructed with clear and concise instructions with the appropriate educational references required to complete the course work. The course was in the Blackboard format, with assistance to students when needed. Also providing students with formats and examples that assist them with completing the assignments to meet their conventional goal.
Have you heard about the dreaded “Freshman 15”? The “Freshman 15” is an expression commonly used around the United States that refers to the weight gained, during a student’s first year at college. Every college student’s worst nightmare is gaining the “Freshman 15”, which is one of many reasons female students turn to extreme forms to stop them from gaining weight. College is about starting brand new and creating a life that you would want to live in. The question here really is, “Why would women be willing go to through so much to conquer a certain body image?” Does the media have anything to do with it? Nowadays, it is rare to see ads with average sized women. Instead, models are extremely skinny and tiny waisted, yet big breasted, with big bottoms and have perfect skin. It is rare to see imperfect women with disproportionate curves, unwarranted flaws, or even excessive freckles. It is those unrealistic images that we see in the media that contribute to our desire to be skinny and perfectly toned – to eventually develop a self-destructive sense of self. There is always something wrong with how we look, but never anything wrong in our friends or the celebrities whom we admire. In many years, there has been a major focus from research studies on the topic that the media is the main cause of a body image dissatisfaction, low self-esteem, and eating disorder patterns in females between the ages of
Incoming Freshmen reflecting on my first semester, some things that you might want to think about when coming into the High School. Teachers are one of the main concerns that I had when coming into the High School. Some people are nervous about oh are these good teachers or are these bad teachers. I do have to say there is a very wide variety of teachers here that have different standards. Also the schedule I advise that you try and memorize it as quick as you can. Once you memorize your schedule you are able to navigate the hallways much easier to navigate. It really helps when you want to get from point A to point B without getting a tardy. If your nervous about the work your going to be given wether its harder or if you given a lot more
