Through the duration of the experiment there was a noticeable trend of the Dissolved Oxygen levels decreasing, this can be connected to the necessary respiration of the primary producers, both the shrimp in the first week and the freshwater snail for the rest of the time. By extension the carbon dioxide that is produced through their respiration's then taken in by the plants in the ecosystem and undergo photosynthesis and in turn increases the overall pH of the ecosystem. with the sudden death of the shrimp, what is known of the species is that it is not able to tolerate high levels of pH, The freshwater shrimp could have died as some species are unable to tolerate elevated pH levels (Closs et al. 2004), thus, the connection made was that the
The purpose of this lab was to answer the question, “Of the saline solutions of 0%, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, and 2% sodium chloride (NaCl), which solution will yield the highest hatching viability for the brine shrimp?” The hypothesis was that the saline solution most precise to the concentration of NaCl in seawater, which is approximately 3.5%, will yield the highest hatching viability. Therefore, the 2% NaCl solution will yield the highest hatching viability.
If hatching viability is affected by the amount of motor oil in the environment of the brine shrimp eggs, then when the amount of motor oil is increased the hatching viability will decrease.
Reaching a length of up to 5.5 centimeters (or about 2 inches), the bigclaw snapping shrimp is the largest member of the family Alpheidae, which are also known as the pistol shrimp. It is found in water up to 30 meters (98 feet) deep from as far north as North Carolina’s Outer Banks to the Brazilian coast. It also is able to survive in areas of rapidly different salinity; A. heterochaelis has be found in environments that range from mesohaline (having a salinity of 5 to 18 parts per thousand) to hyperhaline (having a salinity of 40+ ppt). This means that it lives in environments that range from brackish to seawater of above average salinity. It is most commonly found in areas where cover can be easily found during the day, such as an oyster reef.
The water in the hot bag was approximately 65° Celsius. We allowed the shrimp to move about for 30 minutes because we had the time. Every 10 minutes we replaced the hot water in the bag with fresh hot water because it was slowly cooling down. After the 30 minutes were up we closed the clamps and removed the hot and cold bags from the tubing and counted the number of shrimp in each section and recorded our results. We did not count any dead shrimp because that condition would obviously not be a condition they could survive in. In this part of the lab we measured the temperature of water from each section and recorded that number also. We did this by simply pouring the water from each section into 4 different test tubes and placing a thermometer in each.

The development of A. salina will be unfavorable if exposed to too much ethyl alcohol. Treatment two and three have more ethanol alcohol than treatment one and more brine shrimp died when put into more ethanol alcohol. Since the viability was less than the viability in treatment one, the hypothesis was supported. Treatment four was the constant and had no ethanol alcohol which less cysts died when compared to treatment two and three, but when compared to treatment one, more had died,
This article presents the impact of low oxygen waters on Chesapeake Bay Zoo-plankton. Anoxia (oxygen deficiency) reduces the cope-pod abundances in Chesapeake's bottom waters, and disrupts the cope-pods inhabits towards the bottom and their migration to the surface. Also, cope-pods will have limited survival ability in low oxygen conditions in bottom waters. Results show the number of cope-pods surviving for 24 hours were significantly lower in water containing smaller milligrams of oxygen liter. Some will have a greater chance of survival because of their low metabolism that requires smaller oxygen. Low oxygen reduces the filtration rate of zoo-plankton and the filtration rate of the fresh water. Decreased filtration reduces metabolic rate in low-oxygen conditions, generally occur in the mesohaline part in summer. Low oxygen-levels may cut phyto-plankton and Cope pod's production. Lower oxygen concentration prevents hatching and the growth of eggs, which eggs could survive a few days if temperatures are cold and as the eggs sink to the bottom.
The difference of Captain John Smith in “The General History of Virginia” and William Bradford in “Of Plymouth Plantation.” Captain John Smith was an english soldier, explorer, and author. William Bradford was an english separatist leader in Leiden, Holland, and in the Plymouth Colony. The Plymouth Colony was in Massachusetts and Jamestown was in Virginia. The Plymouth Colony was formed for the purpose of having religious freedom, while Jamestown Colony was formed by adventures looking to make a profit in the New World. At Plymouth, the pilgrims did well living with their Native Americans neighbors while at Jamestown they did not do very well at living peacefully with the Native Americans.
“They see something, walk up to it, pick it up, and maybe beat the crap out of it,” says Justin Marshall, referring to a commonly unknown creature called the Mantis Shrimp. This species often goes overlooked and unnoticed by most of the world and not just because it only grows 2-7 inches (“Peacock Mantis Shrimp” 1). Since it is such an unknown animal, many people do not know what it is or what makes it remarkable. How can the small mantis shrimp, a crustacean whose appearance is more like that of a clown than a ferocious beast, be worth noting in the different fields of science? They are more interesting than they seem. Mantis shrimp possess a vast array of fascinating physical features that set them apart from other sea-dwelling animals: their clubs
Taking about a week to fully mature into an adult and living for several months, the shrimp do have a surprisingly long life cycle being also able to reproduce up to 300 cysts every 4 days in the right conditions. Other variables such as salinity, temperature, light, pH levels, water levels and predatory presence play a large role in the hatching rate of the crustacean. The brine shrimp are an extremely versatile micro-crustacean as they can survive up to 10x salt concentration of ordinary sea water (Eol.org, 2016) and are able to protect themselves during drought or when conditions are not ideal for survival. This is called highly resistant encysted gastrula embryo (cyst) that is easily able to hatch under conditions that can be replicated at home.
Degradation of the economy, environment and human health is caused by a variety of species. However, the most harmful types of species are known as invasive species. An invasive species is any species that is not native to the environment it is living in. European Green Crabs in particular cause mass harm to their surrounding habitat. However, there are several methods put in place to control the widespread of these creatures and minimize the harm caused by European green crabs. The European green crab can spread accidentally and then stay and cause harm to their new surroundings. Although these green crabs can cause serious harm, there are multiple measures in place to minimize the degree of harm. Confirmation of European green crabs in Canada
Using a model they projected the outcomes of a 10-fold increase in existing oyster biomass. This resulted in a system wide reduction of surface chlorophyll, increased dissolved oxygen in summer-average deep water, and added to summer-submerged biomass by removing nitrogen. The influence on pelagic waters was limited. They recommend this de-nitrification method as a supplement to nutrient load reduction. (Cerco CF, Noel MR. 2007.)
Crawfish are delicious crustaceans that closely resemble lobsters. Many people consider crawfish to be as delicious as lobsters, which is why these crustaceans are harvested all over the world. In the U.S., crawfish are closely associated with the haute cuisine and culture of Louisiana. In fact, crawfish are the official crustacean of the state. I normally prefer to harvest or purchase crawfish on the day I intend to cook them. However, many people prefer to purchase and eat them later but do not know how to keep crawfish alive in a sack or container for several days before finally preparing and eating them. Fortunately, I will provide you with some tips on how I keep my crawfish fresh and healthy
I am Indian. My entire family is Indian. I am the very first child to have been born outside of India. My parents’ generation were the first to marry into non-Indian families. So America is pretty new for us. However, there isn’t really anything special about us coming to this country. My aunt came for school. My father came for school. My mother came because of my father. They all came by plane comfortably, and never experienced an adventure while coming into the US. It was the most boring travel story EVER.
