Friar Lawrence In Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet

When an individual follows the guidance of a mentor they trust this person to give helpful advice and to make good decisions. William Shakespeare's tragedy, Romeo & Juliet, portrays this through the character Friar Lawrence who holds the role of a holy figure. He is expected to help many people with their conflicts including Romeo and Juliet’s. The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet ends with both young lovers dead at the end. Friar Lawrence is guilty for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet because he makes hasty decisions and does not think things through. Friar Lawrence is responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet because he makes hasty decisions. This can be shown in the scene where Friar Lawrence is giving a plan to Juliet on how to escape marrying Paris. However, the plan is terrible and obviously not thought through enough. Friar Lawrence states, “That copest with death himself to ‘scape from it. And if thou doesn’t, I’ll give thee remedy” (IV. i. 73-75). The evidence above is …show more content…

This is portrayed during the scene in which Friar Lawrence discovers that a very important message that was sent to Romeo which explains how Juliet is not actually dead was not delivered by Friar John. Friar John says to Friar Lawrence, “Sealed up the doors and would not let us forth so that my speed to Mantua there was stayed”. (V, ii, 11-12) Friar John got stuck quarantined in a house due to an outbreak in plague so he was not able to deliver the letter to Romeo in Mantua. This moment reveals how Friar Lawrence did not think through ways in which his plan could be ruined. Friar Lawrence should have made extra precautions in order to insure that this message gets to Romeo. He should not have expected for there to be no flaws in his plan and this is obvious proof that Friar Lawrence is not fit to be a mentor and guilty for the deaths of Romeo and
