I strongly believe that the person with the most severe impact towards Juliet’s suicide was Friar Lawrence. This guy has guilt all over him! To be honest, it was all HIS plan to give Juliet the sleeping potion and help her get Romeo to come back to Verona just to save her from marrying Paris. Of course, it wasn’t just so she could have Romeo back into her life, but it was also out of his own needs. He needed people to believe that he had nothing to do with Romeo’s return. He needed people to believe that he had nothing to do with Romeo’s and Juliet’s secret marriage, and he most certainly needed people to find no one in the tomb when Juliet’s “dead” body goes “missing”. With the wedding so close and all of these little problems that could …show more content…
“That copest with death himself to ‘scape from it; and,if thou darest, I’ll give thee remedy.” (4.1.75-76) This quote illustrates how Friar Lawrence had suddenly come up with the idea to give Juliet a sleeping potion that would make it look like she was dead. Sure this seemed like a good idea at the time, but what if there a change in plans? What if she dies in her sleep and doesn’t see Romeo? What if she wakes up the next morning, Or what if it’s a trick and it kills her so he doesn’t get caught? All of these are good possibilities that none of them take into consideration until it’s too late and the wedding is changed to Wednesday. “O, look! Methinks I see my cousin’s ghost seeking out Romeo, that did spit his body upon a rapier’s point. Stay Tybalt, stay! Romeo, I come! This do I drink to thee.” And with that Juliet falls asleep on her bed only to be found “dead” the next morning for her wedding (4.3.55-58). If Friar Lawrence hadn't given her that potion and told her to just leave Verona and meet up with Romeo, none of them would be dead right now! Romeo and Juliet would both be living together and free from the Montague and Capulets disputes among each other. Although you could argue that Friar Lawrence had no choice but to give Juliet that potion! She was literally going to kill herself right then and there if he didn’t help her get together with Romeo. But if Friar Lawrence had of just told somebody about their plan, to what was going to happen between Romeo and Juliet's wedding, none of this would've happened! There would've been a totally different outcome to this play! And that’s why I think that Friar Lawrence had the biggest influence towards Juliet's suicide in the
Friar Lawrence is the most to blame for the events that occur in Romeo and Juliet because he married them. In
One example of how Friar Lawrence is responsible for the death of Romeo and Juliet is that he gave the vial of potion to Juliet to help her fake her own death. Since Tybalt was murdered, the wedding idea between Juliet and Paris was introduced to cheer everyone up. Friar gave Juliet a potion that would make her seem dead for the next 42 hours and he would send a letter to Romeo telling him not to worry. “Shall, stiff and stark and cold, appear like death/And in this borrowed likeness
“Take thou this vial, being then in bed, / And this distilled liquor drink thou off” (Shakespeare 4.1.96-97) This quote reveals that Friar gave Juliet the sleeping potion to drink the night before Paris and Juliet were to be married. The plan that he had in mind was for Juliet to drink the sleeping potion that would make her appear dead for forty-two hours, be buried in the Capulet tomb, then be saved and took to Mantua by Romeo when she woke up. However, it is later revealed that Friar John couldn’t bring the important letter Friar Laurence wrote to Romeo that described the plan because he was quarantined inside of a house because town health officials suspected he was infected with the plague. When he heard of this, Friar Laurence was going to write to Romeo again, meanwhile taking Juliet to his cell when she woke up and keeping her there until Romeo arrived. It was too late, since Romeo already heard that Juliet was dead from Balthasar, causing him to already be on his way to Juliet’s grave to kill himself so he could be with her. Friar Laurence allowing Juliet to drink the sleeping potion before he was certain that Romeo knew about the plan was ultimately what caused the death of Romeo and
In the classical romance Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare many were distraught by the two lovers’ suicide. The most to blame for their deaths is Friar Lawrence. He took many risks helping Romeo and Juliet. He knew what he was getting himself into and still helped them. Some say he's a bad person for doing that, others say he was being kind.
Friar Lawrence is the most to blame for the events that occur in Romeo and Juliet because he gave Juliet a sleeping potion which lead to a lot of people's death including Romeo and Juliets. When Juliet was seeking advice and confirmation from Friar Lawrence he advised her,
Each character in the play,Romeo and Juliet, does certain things based on what they think and how they feel. Most of the other characters’ actions are based off of love, hate, and wealth. As for Friar Laurence, he has different motivations compared to the other characters. He stands up for peace in Verona between the two rich rival families, the Montagues and the Capulets. Everything he does is mostly centered on creating peace.
In the book Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare Friar Lawrence is guilty for the death of those young lovers. Friar is an honored and valuable man to the citizen of Verona City. Most of the time he was one of the persons, other than the nurse who helped them to fulfil their dream. The Friar directly and indirectly took part in the suicide for the wrong decisions he made every time to solve Romeo and Juliet's problems. He didn't make the right decisions at the right time, which caused Romeo and Juliet to suffer.
Friar Lawrence played the biggest part of why Romeo and Juliet died. When Juliet was complaining about killing herself he stopped her from doing so, Friar Lawrence explained that there's a potion that would put her to sleep and would help her get out of marrying Paris. In the Shakespeare’s he stated that “When you’re in bed, take this vial, mix its contents with liquor, and drink. Then a cold, sleep-inducing drug will run through your veins, and your pulse will stop. Your flesh will be cold, and you’ll stop breathing. The red in your lips and your cheeks will
In William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Friar Lawrence is shown to contradict himself numerous times, most notably when speaking to Romeo regarding the latter’s love life. Despite his doubts as to whether or not Romeo’s newfound love for Juliet was genuine as Romeo was in “love” with Rosaline merely a day ago, he agrees to marry Romeo and Juliet in hopes that the marriage between the young Capulet and Montague would settle the long-time feud between the two houses: “But come, young waverer, come, go with me. In one respect, I'll thy assistant be, for this alliance may so happy prove to turn your households' rancor to pure love” (II.iii.96-99). Furthermore, Friar Lawrence had advised Romeo to consider his relationship with Juliet carefully
In William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet Friar Lawrence is the priest. In Romeo and Juliet two teenagers fall in love and cause tragic events to unfold and people die because of the love that these two teenagers have. Friar Lawrence is to blame for the tragedy of 6 deaths for two reasons. He married Romeo and Juliet and then tried to help them avoid consequences of getting married. Friar Lawrence is undoubtedly to blame for the tragic events that unfold in Romeo and Juliet.
I feel like Friar Lawrence is the one to blame for Romeo and Juliet’s death. It was his idea in the first place to give Juliet the sleeping potion and didn’t tell Romeo as soon as possible. He didn’t plan out accordingly and didn’t take much action when doing all this. He doesn’t even tell the families that they are doing all this so that there won’t be more of a feud among the families. Romeo and Juliet got married fast so that they could be with each other forever.
First, Friar Lawrence agrees to marry Romeo and Juliet to end the feuding between the families. He says, “In one respect I’ll thy assistant be:/ For this alliance may so happy prove/ To turn your households’ rancour to pure love.” (2.3.90-92). Secondly, he organizes a plan for Juliet to take the potion to fake her death. In the plan he also decides to send a message to Romeo explaining their plans but Friar John says “I could not send it – here it is again –/ Nor get a messenger to bring it thee,” (5.2.14-15) to Friar Lawrence so Romeo was never informed of the plan. Lastly, at the end of the play when he finds Juliet and a dead Romeo, he leaves and says “Come go, good Juliet, I dare no longer stay.” (5.3.159). Once both sides are involved, it means Romeo and Juliet must be
While Friar is marrying Romeo and Juliet he tells them this, “Till holy church incorporate two in one.” ( Act 2, Scene 6, Line 37) Because he married them in secret he had to keep this from their parents. If Lord Capulet would have known, he might not have pushed so hard to have Juliet marry Paris. So Romeo and Juliet would still be alive. Also the Friar came up with the potion plan. He made the idea without actually knowing if Romeo received the plan, which was a setup for disaster. And because Romeo didn't know about about the plan he thought that Juliet was actually dead because of what he heard from Balthasar. This caused him to kill himself and Juliet to kill
The plan was, “...When you’re in bed, take this vial, mix its contents with liquor, and drink. Then a cold sleep-inducing drug will run through your veins, and your pulse will stop.” He goes on saying that Romeo will come and save her by digging her out of the tomb that her parents will put her in. Not only is this a very dangerous plan that could lead to having Juliet getting buried alive; but there are many flaws in this plan. One of the flaws that did end up happening was Romeo not getting the letter about the plan, which led to Romeo thinking that his Juliet is dead, and now he wants to be dead. If Friar Lawrence just came up with a less dangerous plan then the deaths of Romeo and Juliet wouldn’t have
Friar Lawrence was one of the most important characters in the novel. Even though he was not on the stage for most of the play he greatly contributed to the tragedy that would soon happen at the end of the play. There was basically three major parts that lead to the death of Romeo and Juliet, which Friar Lawrence was involved in all of them. Friar Lawrence played a vital role in the marriage, planning and death of Romeo and Juliet. His attempts to do the right thing were noble, but because of poor planning they would soon lead to the inevitable tragedy.
