Friar Lawrence's Mistakes Essay

One of many reasons that Friar Laurence is to blame for the death of Romeo and Juliet is the marriage of Romeo and Juliet. Considering the marriage of Romeo and Juliet ended in death Friar Laurence is one to blame . In the text it states “Come, come with me, and we will make short work for, by your leaves, you shall not stay alone till holy church incorporate two in one.” This quote reveals the troubles Friar caused leading up to the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Without the marriage of Romeo and Juliet the mishandle of the medicines would not have gotten out of hand leading to their deaths.

Romeo and Juliet were two young people from feuding families, who fell in love. Their love was so strong, that they ended up dying for each other. The ironic twist at the end of the story surprised many who had read it. But who is to blame for this tragedy? Many characters in this play could be to blame. We believe that some of the characters to blame are Capulet, Friar Lawrence, plus Romeo and Juliet themselves.

In the classic play Romeo and Juliet, Friar Laurence plays a major part. Romeo and Juliet trusted him entirely as he was the priest of their town. They turned to the Friar for help and advice at a few crucial points in the play. Little did these two lovers know that their decision to turn to Friar Laurence for help would eventually lead to their deaths. Friar Laurence was responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet because he married Romeo and Juliet, he was afraid of committing a sin, and because of his faulty plan for saving Juliet from a marriage to Paris.

Now Juliet is left alone in a tomb alone knowing that her is dead. Friar Laurence also was suppose to give Romeo a letter with a plan but it never got delivered to Romeo. Friar Laurence ask Friar John “ Who bare my letter, then, to Romeo”. Friar John answered back “ I could not send it- here it is again-”. That’s another reason why Friar Laurence is at fault for Romeo and Juliet death, Never got the plan out letter to Romeo.

Romeo kept on forcing the idea upon him, so he marries them hoping that their marriage would end the Capulet and Montague feud, even though he did not ask for the parents’ consent. He displays his hope when he says, “For this alliance may so happy prove / to turn your household’s rancor to pure love”(Act I, Scene 4, Lines 91-92). Friar Laurence kept Romeo and Juliet’s relationship secretive, making the situation worsen. Later on, the Friar shows that he has regrets about the marriage. The Friar feels that, “Violent delights have violent ends / And their triumph die… too swift arrives as tardy as too slow” (Act II, scene 6, Lines 9-15). The Friar senses that the wedding is happening too quickly and doubts his decision. He had the potential to prevent the deaths of Romeo and Juliet, but his decisions led Romeo and Juliet to do reckless actions under his ideas. In the play, Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, Friar Laurence is responsible for their deaths. So many things were done wrong by Friar Laurence, that lead to their deaths. The first mistake that Friar Laurence made was to agree to marry the two in secret and without the permission of their parents. The next bad advice he gave, was when he instructed Juliet to fake her own death. The last wrong thing was giving the message for Romeo to an unreliable messenger. If any of these events did not take place, their deaths could’ve been avoided.

The next event that contributes to their deaths is Friar Laurance's faulty planning in the fake death of Juliet. Friar Laurance did not thoroughly plan the fake death of Juliet. He failed to inform Romeo that her death was fake. "I could not send it. Nor get a messenger to bring thee, so fearful were they of infection." (Act 5, scene 2, 14-16). Friar Lawrence did not stress the importance of the letter. As a result, Friar John did not see that it was delivered to Romeo. Another fault in his plan was informing Romeo of who was delivering the letter. "I'll find out your man,/ and he shall signify from time to time/ every good hap to your chances here". (Act 3, scene 3, 169-171) The Friar forgets to inform Romeo who would be bringing the message, that it would be one of his fellow Friars. In Act IV, Scene I Juliet goes to the Friar for advice. In his cell she encounters Paris, after chatting for awhile she requests to see the Friar alone, where the Friar tells her his plan. "Hold, then; go home, be merry, give consent/ To marry Paris: Wednesday is to-morrow:/ To-morrow night look that thou lie alone;/ Let not thy nurse lie with thee in thy/ chamber:/ Take thou this vial, being then in bed,/ And this distilled liquor drink thou off;" (Act 4, scene 1, 89-93). His first mistake was when he initially helped Romeo and Juliet with the aid of the Nurse. Both Romeo and Juliet are children and their parents should be included in every decision made for them. Throughout the whole story there is always a confusion for what the plan was or what the next step was. Friar Laurence was just trying to help Romeo and Juliet and when doing so it resulted in a lot of confusion. For one instance Balthasar was given the letter from friar Laurence. In that letter it contains the news that Juliet was alive. All Balthasar had to do was to give the letter to Romeo but of course something went something went wrong and Romeo never got the letter. That was one of the biggest confusion that caused a very big point in the play. Romeo went to go visit Juliet at the tomb because he thought she was dead. He was so devastated that he drank some poison to kill himself so he could be with Juliet. Just minutes later Juliet woke up from her coma and was alive, and by her was Romeo who was dead. If Romeo would have received the letter he would have known the truth, and Romeo and Juliet could have lived happily ever after. Except we all know in stories that there always is a problem in a story. In this particular story it resulted in much tragedy. All of this was caused because of the confusion brought in from friar Laurence. He didn't make sure that Romeo knew that, so in the end everything went wrong. This problem could have been avoided it friar Laurence would have made the plan more organized and made sure everyone knew what was happening before Juliet took the remedy.

Romeo and Juliet is a great tragedy caused by the actions of Friar Lawrence. The Friar did many things while looking out for his good, and not the good of Romeo and Juliet. Friar Lawrence should not have married Romeo and Juliet in the first place. He shouldn’t have given Juliet the sleeping potion and if he didn't rely on someone else to give a letter of great importance to Romeo, Romeo and Juliet would not have committed suicide. All of these unforgivable mistakes that the Friar committed lead to the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. If he could have thought his actions through this plan could have worked out better. Friar Lawrence is fully to blame for Romeo and Juliet's death.
