Frida Kahlo was born on the 6th of July 1907 in the “Blue house” built by her father in Coyoacan, Mexico, then a suburb of Mexican City. Kahlo grew up in the family’s home where she was born, and had two older sisters and a younger sister.
She was diagnosed with polio at the age of six, causing her to be bedridden for nine months. While recovering from the illness, her father encouraged her to play various sports to help aid her recovery. This was very unusual for a girl at the time.

As a young women, Frida would have never imagined becoming a painter, as it was not a part of her career goals. In 1922, Kahlo was one of very few females who enrolled at the renowned national preparatory school and became known for her pleasant and cheerful spirit. Kahlo became friends with a group of politically minded students while at school. At this young age, Frida’s life goal was to become a doctor, however this all changed after a tragic accident at age 18, which changed the course of her life. The injuries from the accident were ones that she would never fully recover from and which would bring her chronic pain for the rest of her life. In 1929, Kahlo married fellow communist, Diego Rivera. In their early years, Kahlo followed Rivera based on where his commissions were. Kahlo started to become saddened by his many infidelities however, including an affair with her sister, so in response to this betrayal, she cut of her trademark long, dark hair. She wanted desperately to have a child but again experienced heartbreak in 1934. She and Rivera went through periods of separation and so in 1939, she divorced him.
