In your group of friends, are you the good or bad one ? I mean it’s no secret that someone can have a bad friend. Some characteristics of a good friend are caring for you, and defending you in your time of need. An example of a pair of good friends can be found in John Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men”. The two main characters, George and Lennie were good friends. Once I finished this novelle. It was clear to me that George was a good friend to Lennie. Due to his actions of caring for Lennie defending Lennie and not allowing him to suffer any further. It's fairly to understand my main point. In the novelle, George can be seen as being a good friend when he throws away the dead mouse that Lennie had with him.(Steinbeck 6) Because of his actions we can tell that he cares for Lennie's health and well-being. Caring for someone you know is a clear trait that good friends have. Another example of this is when George tells Lennie to stay away from Curley’s wife because she’s nothing but trouble.(Steinbeck 32) This clearly shows …show more content…
Which means that we have to look at the bigger picture and examine what George did to Lennie. Yes you could say that George killed Lennie so her could take some weight off of his shoulders and not have to care about how Lennie could screw up. He has said that his life would be better without him.(Steinbeck 11) But like I said, we have to zoom out and get a better view. George knew that he was going to make this decision one day, he knew that he would have to prevent Lennie from harming himself and others. Put yourself in George’s shoes. Would you have rather killed your friend to prevent him or her from doing anymore , or would you rather have them live and get themselves in deep trouble ? How about you think about it this way. Would you rather have you friends suffering come to a quick end or would you rather have them be tortured for God knows how long
So it is clear that George had to kill Lennie so Curley couldn't do anything to him. If George didn't kill Lennie then the state would have sent him to the insane asylum. ¨An' s'pose they lock him up an' strap him down and put him in a cage. That ain't no good, George¨(Steinbeck 97).
The killing of Lennie was done without malicious intent. Throughout the book, George takes care of Lennie by protecting him and providing him with basic needs. Killing Lennie was not an easy choice for George and was an unquestionably
We think this because Lennie still may have a mental illness but that doesn’t make it right to kill him. “ Minimum of 25 years if a firearm is used, otherwise a minimum of 10 years.” This quote proves that if the Police found George, he would be in some huge trouble. The same thing will Lennie though if George would have been responsible and he turned him in then he would have to be in jail as long. “Death penalty or life imprisonment.” This quote proves that George has done the wrong thing by killing Lennie because George can now be on death row or life imprisonment. This is why I think George is not a true friend to
In Of Mice and Men, George and Lennie have a friendship that is shown through the decisions that they make. If George and Lennie did not
He knew that it was his responsibility to kill Lennie. He killed Lennie because he was responsible for him. George also killed him because he did not want to feel guilty or bad like Candy. George also didn’t want Lennie to have a painful death by the hands of Curley’s gang. He knew that it would be best for him and Lennie for him to do it himself. He wanted Lennie to feel comfortable and he wanted to tell him how he felt. George says “No, Lennie. I ain’t mad. I never been mad an’ I ain’t now. That’s a thing I want you to know”(Steinbeck 106). George did the right
George and Lennie were good friends, so why did George want to solve the Lennie's issue by killing him? Did George get rid of Lennie because he was suffering or he saw an opportunity to not have to deal with him anymore? In John Steinbeck’s novella of Mice and men readers were stunned by the ending. Some readers feel that George deserves some type of punishment for killing Lennie while others feel the complete opposite. However some people don't understand that George committed one of the worst kinds of killing, he technically committed assisted suicide, and that shows that killing is never justified, there is no need big enough to kill someone even if they are in pain and suffering.
When George finds out he knows that Lennie will be “lynched, beaten up, and probably be killed in a slow, painful way”, which means that he is in a great deal of trouble and it’ll cost him a ton of pain, he also knows that it is only a matter of time until Lennie ends up hurting another person. So to save Lennie from any pain George ends up killing him. He knows that this is the best thing for Lennie, because it will end up protecting him from any future trouble and now Lennie can’t hurt anyone
A good friendship is needed to survive through tough times. Lennie respects George because George gives him comfort. George cares for Lennie so much that he considers him to be part of his family: “George said, he’s my cousin. I told his old lady id take care of him. He got kicked in the head by a horse when he was a kid” (Steinbeck 22). Aside from comfort and advice, Lennie also needs George because when he gets in trouble, George always manages to find a way to help him get out of it. When Lennie had got in trouble in Weed, George stays by his side and gives him advice that helps remain safe and calm. George has many opportunities to leave Lennie and change his lifestyle, but he needs Lennie just as much in order to help him through his own hardships. Lennie looks
In John Steinbeck's classic novella, Of Mice and Men, George makes the decision of killing Lennie because he knows it is in Lennie's best interest. His act of killing Lennie is not considered criminal. George has good intentions in killing his companion. George is trying to prevent Lennie from being tortured and from his constant desire to please George and not cause trouble. Additionally, Lennie repeatedly places himself in difficult situations, and as a result, brings George into the circumstances. There is a close friendship between George and Lennie, and George had carefully thought out whether or not he
The characterization of Lennie shows that he is very innocent to a point and that he does not understand that what he is doing is wrong. For example, after killing his puppy, Lennie says to the pup “‘why do you got to get killed?” (85). First of all, it is shown that Lennie may not completely understand the concept of death. He is talking to a dead dog which leads the reader to believe that he can not comprehend the weight of what he has done. Second, he is asking the puppy why it died immediately after killing it. All of this comes together to show that Lennie is unable to grasp or acknowledge his violent behavior, nor can he prevent it. However, after killing Curley’s wife, Lennie words suggest that he is slowly starting to realize what he had done. After he tossed hay over her, he says “‘I done a real bad thing’” (92). Before, he blamed the pup for dying but now he is starting to comprehend what he has done. Unfortunately, his realization comes too late and what is done, is done. Fully knowing what he had done would crush Lennie so by killing him, George was saving him from the agony of regret. Overall, George needed to kill Lennie in order to protect him from the pain that comes from
George’s greatest concern was to provide Lennie the safety he needed. There was never a point in the story where Lennie was abandoned by George for money, hookers, or living a better life. Although George dreamed and complained about of how life would be without Lennie, his conscience always told him otherwise. George cared for Lennie like if they were brothers. As a result of Lennie’s actions, George came to the tragic decision of putting Lennie down. In order to truly protect Lennie, George made the correct decision of executing him.
“If you want to find out who’s a true friend, screw up or go through a challenging time… Then see who sticks around.” Karen Salomsohn’s words are about friendship. Salomsohn is suggesting that in tough times only true friends stay by your side. This idea is prominent in Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, in the example of George and Lennie, two close friends and traveling buddies. George sticks around Lennie despite his childish behavior, even though sometimes George gets fed up and even at times wants to leave Lennie. Lennie tends to “do bad things” yet George is always by his side to help him resolve it. George protects Lennie, cares for Lennie and does the right thing by killing Lennie. Overall, George is a true friend to Lennie, as he
Some people who have read John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, believe that George really didn’t care for Lennie and that there was no friendship as George was hollering at Lennie and George killed Lennie. The definition of friendship is trusting, being trusted, and caring for one another. Throughout the book there are many signs of friendship on both sides, Lennie trusted and was sharing to George, and they both protected each other. There was a true friendship between Lennie and George because, they both looked out for each other, George would comfort Lennie, and George tried to prevent Lennie’s death.
In the novella “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck, there are two guys named George and Lennie. They were friends for a very long time and stood by each other. Some people may argue that George was a bad friend to Lennie but I believe that he was a good friend. Friends aren’t perfect, they will mess up. Just because George messed up and made questionable actions towards Lennie, that doesn’t make him a bad friend. You will not find a friend that has never done wrong by you.
George promises Lennie many things once they get their own farm, “’O.K. Someday- we’re gonna get the jack together… ‘Specially if you remember as good as that.’”(15-16). So George killing Lennie was for his own benefit and it was a very immoral thing to do.
