From War: A Letter To James Henry Hammond

My fellow cousin, how are you? I have yet to send a letter and I’m sorry for that. Life right now is a little uneasy for me, there is so much to fear and not to fear. Texas has just made its move on leaving the union and there is so much to think of that. I woke up one morning reading an article that James Henry Hammond had wrote in the newspaper saying for us not to fear a war. I was confused, from us leaving the Union can cause such a thing. I worry about my land of cotton I grow and live on. Reading the article gave me a courage, there can’t be a war without cotton! James Hammond says that “Cotton is King” and if he is right I can make good money from this war. My land is making good and strong cotton and maybe going to war I can sell more.
