The Federation for Children with Special Needs (FCSN) was one of the AT resources that caught most my attention meanwhile reading for this assignment. The FSCN specializes in providing information, support, and assistance to parents of children with disabilities, their professional partners, and their communities. They also seemed to be committed to listening to and learning from families, and encourage full participation in community life by all people, especially those with disabilities. This entity believes that individual differences in people are a natural part of life and that disabilities provide children and adults with unique perspectives, insights, and abilities which contribute to the overall well-being of society. The Dover Family School Alliance (DFSA) is a collaborative group that was founded in 2012 and is intended to support special needs students, families, and educators within the Dover school district. There organization was founded when a number of parents within the Dover School District expressed an interest in developing an information and support group for parents. With the help of NH Connections, the Dover Family School Alliance was started. DFSA’s mission is to be a resource for parents of children with special needs and provide access to relevant information, training, and emotional support
The special educational needs (SEN) team are supported by a very active group who make sure that they provide a range of activities to meet the needs of our ever growing community of special schools, as well as colleagues in mainstream primary and secondary schools.
Adults working with SEN children spend the majority of their time supporting that child however sometimes it’s the practitioners that needs the support. The role of the practitioners can be hard work and isn’t taken lightly, the practitioner needs support from other people around them to help promote their confidence and provide the correct provision for the children. A helpful support to practitioners could be the charity Mencap. Mencap work in partnership with people with a learning disability and all our services support people to live life as they choose.
Within our current education system, it is very clear that not all students are being supported at the same level as others. One group that faces this unequitable treatment would be students of special needs. Many times, students with special needs are not given the adequate resources to be as successful as those who do not have special needs. My hope and aspiration is to help support students with special needs get the resources that they desire in order to be as successful as they can be, and to live a good quality of life. For this assignment, I interview a service provider for special education services. The service provider I interviewed, takes part in the educational team, and provide services. The service provider is developmental therapist. I was able to develop a better sense of the importance of inclusion. After interviewing the service provider, and learning her philosophy of inclusion I have was able to better understand the accommodations and modifications for special needs students.
The Alice Saddy Caring for the Community a non-profit agency located in London, Ontario, was established to support individuals with developmental disabilities by assisting them to live independently rather than an in a group home. Via various programs and services offered by the association, they provided opportunities for individual with developmental disabilities to become active, “contributing members of the community”. As a nonprofit, community-based organization, the Alice Saddy Association is committed to promoting independence and building an inclusive community where all individuals with disabilities can lead full and gratifying lives.

Unit TDA 2.15 – Support children and young people with disabilities and special educational needs.
Everyone has their own set of strengths and weaknesses. Those with disabilities are no different they just have a different set then everyone else. I chose this project topic because in 5th and 6th grade I was part of a program called Peer Pals. Once a week during recess I volunteered in a special needs classroom. This work opened my eyes to the world of special needs and Peer Pals is one of the things I miss about elementary school. I realized that I needed to continue helping the special needs community. No solutions presented themselves and then one day the solution stared me in the face from it’s home in the Reston Community Center Program Guide. “Volunteer at the Adapted Aquatics Class,” I had found a solution to my problem.
From the first day a child is born, parents are there to nurture their child, to support them as they grow and develop. There is a lot to learn about raising a child under normal circumstances, but when a child has special needs parents must learn this whole new language of medical and special education terms (Overton, 2005). Parents enter this new world where navigating for the best interest of their child is riddled with challenges and obstacles that they need to somehow overcome. This is especially true when parents are dealing with the special education program in their child’s school.
In 1994, representatives of 92 governments and 25 international organizations formed the World Conference on Special Needs Education and called on the international community to endorse the concept of change and inclusion through a new statement called ‘The Salamanca Statement’. As this was the first major international statement of what an inclusive approach to education needs to be, they formed practical strategies to ensure this positive inclusion would take place worldwide.
The importance of education for all children, especially for those with disability and with limited social and economic opportunities, is indisputable. Indeed, the special education system allowed children with disability increased access to public education. Apart from that, the special education system has provided for them an effective framework for their education, and for the institutions involved to identify children with disability sooner. In turn, this promotes greater inclusion of children with disability alongside their nondisabled peers. Taking care of children with disabilities requires a compassionate spirit of valuing them as human being worth of respect regardless of their disabilities.
For thousands of years individuals with exceptionalities have been present in all parts of society across the world, especially those with physical or sensory characteristics. However, the way that these individuals have been viewed has changed dramatically. Originally these individuals were seen as ‘imbeciles,’ ‘worthless,’ and ‘a burden on society’ and were often shut away from ‘normal’ society or simply left to die or abandoned to institutions. Society has, however, created a positive change and started to exhibit a more humanitarian view and protective nature and developed a concern for the welfare of individuals with exceptionalities. The steadily changing view of society has paved the way to where today these individuals are now considered a part of an all-inclusive society where every citizen has value, merit and is capable of making a contribution to society.
