Full Metal Alchemist is a show that revolves around alchemy. Alchemy is also something that existed in the real world. Although Full Metal Alchemist (FMA) is just a show, it shares some very interesting similarities to real alchemy, such as the concept of transmuting elements, creating a “philosopher’s stone”, and the pursuit of immortality. The two also have some stark differences such as the process of creating a philosopher’s stone, the purpose and uses of alchemy, and the political significance of alchemy in FMA. They both have some similarities that they share but they also remain very different in many ways. In the science of alchemy all alchemists practiced transmutation. They sought a way to change base metals into precious metals. In FMA the alchemist they had the power to change base metals to gold. This is a process that can be done in the real world. In order to change Lead (Pb) to Gold (Au) it requires particle acceleration to release three protons from lead therefore changing the atomic number of the atom from 82 to 79. This process will then change the lead to gold. In FMA they use another form of energy to accelerate the particles and they can change lead to gold almost instantly. The philosopher’s stone is a legendary relic in both the show and real life. It is said to hold incredible properties. In both the show and real life people wished to create a philosopher’s stone to use its powers. A big important similarity between the philosopher’s stone in the show and in real life is it’s healing properties. In real life the philosopher’s stone is a cure for all illness, just as it is in the show. Not only would it be a healing tool but it also was something that would give immortality to the wielder.
