The shape of the brace, the location of pads attached to the brace, and openings vary amongst orthotists (Clin, Julien). Nevertheless, brace treatment is favorable in comparison to no treatment at all. For example, the Scoliosis Research Society conducted a study in 1985 to scrutinize the correctness of the bracing treatment. “Patients of the same age, same curve pattern and severity were divided into two groups: one treated with bracing; and the other, untreated. Results published in 1993 demonstrated that brace treatment is effective compared to natural history (Canavese, Federico).” Studies conducted on the number of hours per day of brace-wearing show that the more hours per day the brace is worn, the better the result. The brace is usually prescribed for fulltime wear with some time set aside for bathing, swimming, physical education and sport. The patient should be encouraged to be pursue sporting activities while continuing to wear the brace if possible. Contact sports are not allowed with the brace to protect other participants, as the brace can significantly injure another if contacted the right way. These activities generally represent an average of two to four hours a day to ensure that the brace is worn 21 to 23 hours daily (“Minimally Invasive”). Other treatments of scoliosis include surgical treatment to straighten the curve of the spine (Asher, Marc A.).
As puberty hit and my breasts grew, I was in constant pain from the chafing plastic. I had to visit the doctor every now and then to get my brace re-adjusted, it was embarrassing. Sleeping at night also presented its own set of challenges. If I lay on my side, the pressure pads would dig into my body, leaving bruises. If I lay on my back, the top of the brace would dig into my neck. If I lay on my stomach, the front of the brace would constrict and pinch my skin. I wore cotton tees under the brace that were soaked with sweat every morning. I felt so dirty. I often had appointments at the hospital throughout the year, normally my mother would tell me to “stop leaning in your chair and sit up straight.” It was an effect of having scoliosis. One shoulder was higher than the other because my ribs weren’t straight causing me to look pretty much
Frequency of Repositioning The timing of position changes for pressure ulcer prevention is very limited in the studies that were researched. A study found that adults who were frequently turned every two to three hours did not develop as much pressure ulcers compared to those who were turned less regularly (Lyder

At the end of treatment, the brackets are removed and replaced with plastic retainers. Some of the reasons why orthodontists choose traditional braces over Invisalign are credibility, cost and low level of patient compliance.

The Background During the summer before my junior year in high school I broke my neck while on vacation in Outer Banks, NC. I spent the next three months in a cervical halo and three more months after that in a standard C-collar neck brace. My first month back at school was spent in the halo which was interesting because not many people had ever seen one of these braces and did not know the full extent of the hardware. It is a large plastic vest with sheep wool lining the inside; making attending a school with predominantly outdoor hallways in the August heat a very sweaty endeavor. From the vest shot four bars, two in front and two in back, that held a horseshoe shaped bar (the halo) containing 4 screws. At the end of each screw was a fine point that anchored into my skull and stabilized my head/neck. I could not take the halo off and had to bathe, sleep, eat and everything else while wearing the device. Obviously wearing the halo limited my choices of fashion and I resorted to wearing a tank top that I would slip on starting with my feet because it was the most breathable option. It also looked weird if I wore any other shirt.
