Nationalism, imperialism, militarism, international anarchy, and entangling alliances were the fundamental causes of the war. Nationalism implies that each ethnic group has the right to form a sovereign state, so France wanted Alsace and Lorraine back, there were troubles in the Balkans, the National Pride of each ethnic group to hold a sovereign state was on the line, and it pinned nations against each other.
