Funeral Planning
Introduction
Mankind’s history of burial practices and funeral customs are as old as civilization itself. There is no specific way to planning a funeral. Every civilization and culture has provided for their dead in different ways. Religion and personal beliefs play an important role in the burial practices and funeral customs of a given culture or civilization. Furthermore, each civilization and cultured ever studied have three things in common: some type of funeral rites, rituals, and ceremonies; A sacred place for the dead; and memorialization of the dead. The Greeks often buried dead people, and marked graves with carved gravestones. Large pots were also used to mark graves. The deceased were usually buried in graveyards outside the city walls. When the procession reached the burial place, the body could be buried, or it could be burnt, and the ashes were buried. The dead person was often buried with some of their belongings.

Patterns of Death
Today it is probable that you will die in a hospital, hospice care facility, or nursing home, aside from death on impact, such as in accidents. In the past, confronting death was common. As societies advanced and learned more about health and medicine, death became less of an everyday experience. In Modern day America death has become somewhat unnatural. Removal of everyday experience has separated our society from death. In Pastoral/Horticultural societies the elderly where considered the most respected, wise, and usually attain much of the wealth. In post-industrial societies, like the U.S. for instance, dying is not a part of everyday life. Thought people die everyday, today it is most likely that many individuals haven’t experienced someone dying. When the ill or accident victims die, hospital house the deceased’s bodies away from sight, in the basement to of a hospital, usually referred to as the morgue.
