The first way that I thought of this experience relating to my future clinic practice is related to discussions about the afterlife. Religion often determines how people think about what happens after death. Medical emergencies or conditions that I will see may bring up questions about the after life, and it will be important that I am knowledgeable about different beliefs systems and the different resources available to support my clients in their journey. It is important to not push my beliefs on others but rather to inform myself so I can be more understanding and supportive. Along this topic, I am also thinking about how important it will be to be inclusive in my verbiage near holidays. I should not assume that everyone celebrates the
Alvord uses her personal experiences of working as a Navajo surgeon to teach her readers the philosophies her people follow to heal. Her philosophy is that instead of looking at each patient as a mechanical system with each part separate, look at their mind, body and spirit as being connected. If one can do this, patient care will improve. She also touches upon being culturally competent in the work place by knowing your patient population’s beliefs on healing and health care. After reading her story, I believe that in order to be the best health care provider one must look into the spiritual aspects of their patients’ lives. As providers we must provide care using the biopsychosocial model of care and become knowledgeable on our patients beliefs. Like Alvord states within her story, we must walk in beauty, become harmoniously connected to those around us, and care for our patients in a positive
Due to recent changes in Medicare, I am proposing that my team of patient coordinators and I are allowed to attend a conference in Boston that will train coordinators on the current changes that will affect North Shore Clinic’s patient needs. I propose that allowing us to attend this conference will help coordinators understand how Medicare changes will affect individual patients’ treatment costs as well as provide guidelines for calculating the best supplemental coverage for each patient. Furthermore, I believe that North Shore will benefit from this conference by helping its patients to pay for their care and for the clinic to recover its treatment costs.
Our workshop will present a model implemented by our program where the driver of education is a resident-led learning. It will show our experience of residents and staff sharing particular aspects of their upbringing, their cultural uniqueness, their religious (or lack thereof) worldview that informs other residents that come from different ethnic, cultural, or religious worldview. These shared experiences become the basis to share clinical cases, many
The United States has always been the symbol of freedom of religion and health care today has needed to increase its knowledge in incorporating the many different religions/spiritual beliefs in order to provide a more holistic approach to care. As health care providers we should not look in validating our own practice in regards to religion or spirituality but to comprehend and learn to see the patterns of similarities and differences in order to provide holistic care to our patients. As religious and spiritual beliefs are never permanent and are constantly changing and/or influenced by government, thinkers, historical events, technology and the shifting values of cultures the study of religions/spirituality should be continuous for all health care providers. The Native American, Buddhism, and Sikhism have some similar traits and values imbedded in their practiced religions that resemble the Christian Faith and medical providers needs to be aware and able to accommodate them in order to provide holistic care.
Cleveland Clinic is a non-profit academic medical center, founded in 1921, and located in Cleveland, Ohio. It employs over 42,000 staff members throughout their various national and international campuses (US, CANADA and the United Arab Emirates). It is regarded as the fourth best hospital in the United States according to US News & World Report and was even recognized by president Barak Obama in 2012 as “one of the best health care systems in the world and a model to follow in the delivery of care”.
An individual’s folk remedies and customs should be just as valued as professional care practices to ensure culturally competent care. Purnell (2005), noted it is important to be familiar with and sensitive to special events, activities, meaning of holidays, and other ethnic celebrations and the special foods that are served at these times.
The medical field is rapidly growing with so many different careers to choose from. There are many different things that you could specialize in. There are so many opportunities in the medical field for you to grow and become something bigger. A very interesting field to go in is a pediatric nurse. This specific career path interests me because when my little brother was 5 years old he suddenly woke up one morning with his body completely swollen. We immediately rushed him to the hospital. While at the hospital they told us that he had Nephrotic Syndrome. His kidneys weren’t properly working and he was leaking excess protein in his urine. Since that day I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I wanted to help others, especially kids in their
I hope that with my personal beliefs and culture that I will be able to give exceptional care to those whose cultures differ from my own. I am very much a people pleaser and I would try my best to keep everyone happy and comfortable. I think that this comes from my culture of being a millennial. While I am not necessarily knowledgeable about other culture’s practices, rituals, and beliefs, I would try my best to make sure that my patients were taken care of in a manner that protects their health and respects their culture, religion, or race.
Working in health care you are going to be experiencing many different cultures, religions, and beliefs. When dealing with patients from different cultural you need to be aware of what
Five of the ten medical innovations that the Cleveland Clinic, an academic medical research center and hospital. The Clinic polled more than 100 top doctors in their prospective specialties, to select the top new innovations they expected would impact the medical field within 2016.
We have to give them a special call bell, and make sure the light stays on in the bathroom, because they cannot turn on the lights. It has been eye opening and very informative to learn about new cultural differences that affect patient care. It has been interesting, to listen and learn from my Orthodox Jewish population patients to hear and how they live and the importance of
In conclusion, the present study reflects the situation of clinical care for COPD patients in specialized secondary care outpatient clinics. Adherence to clinical guidelines varies consider- ably in outpatient clinics managing COPD patients. Despite this variability, some aspects of clinical care can clearly be improved. With this pilot experiment, a nationwide clinical audit is needed to overcome some of the limitations of the pilot audit, which would include the knowl- edge gained. It is important that this be followed by feedback and an implementation strategy that allows us to finally improve the clinical care being
The following essay will discuss the results of an interview conducted regarding the spiritual values of a patient. The essay will include: what went well and what can be improved for future interviews. Finally, how the interview helped the writer better understand her patient’s spiritual needs will be addressed.
According to Pozgar (2016), “Spirituality implies that there are purpose and meaning to life; spirituality generally refers to faith in a higher being” (p. 52). In the health care settings, patients and providers need to face unique situations in where sometimes their spirituality is their only hope to cope with the results. In the present days, with an emphasis on a holistic approach, it is very important to consider the spiritual and religious preferences of patients. However, not only spirituality and religion can be a support for patients, also, patient’s beliefs can affect their treatments and health care providers need to learn how to approach this type of situations with ethics. As
