One of the biggest aspects of my life is photography. Ever since I can remember, picking up any camera within reach was almost a natural reflex. Capturing moments, a split second in time, has always fascinated me, especially the beauty in that nobody is quite the same. Investing in a camera of my own, as well as all the incredibly expensive equipment to go along with it has arguably been one of the best decisions of my life- allowing me to freeze the time I want in the way I want.

The attempts at creating convincing photos were futile and primitive at best. It was not until a Frenchman Louis Jacques Mane Daguerre and Englishman Briton William Henry Fox Talbot, pioneers of photography created Daguerreotypes and Calotypes did we have our first successful methods of photography. The word “photography” from the Greek works phos meaning light and graphein, to write – wasn’t coined, however, until the mid19th century by Sire John Frederick William Herschel.

Although photography became acknowledged as a legitimate form of artistic pursuit by the early part of the 20th century, photography was considered a minor art form. This level was regardless of photography’s significant impact on perception and visual culture. Instead, the evaluation was premised on the fact that photography, as a medium had no historical precedent, and if any parallel was to be drawn, the parallel would be with that of printmaking. From the point of view of the Academy of Art, art was fixed in concept and form, because art reflects the values that are eternal. While this position allowed for the emergence of new styles, which were historically contingent on one another, it did not readily allow for new forms and media.

I was finally able to meet up with my mentor, on October 3rd I meet her at her house for two small photo shoots. The shoots were a lot faster than I had previously thought they were going to be. I was picturing about an hour session for each while they only took about 15 minutes, the rest of the two hours were filled with questions, observations, and future planning/ instruction.

I can think of many things in life that I put a stop too due to high cost.
