90% of our cotton, 88% of our feed corn, 95% of our sugar beets, and 94% of our soybeans are genetically engineered and yet a lot of our population even knows what “genetically engineering” is.(8) Genetic engineering is also known as genetic modification, it is direct manipulation to the genetic makeup of a cell. It’s the transfer of genes across species boundaries to improve or add specific traits. We use genetic engineering to many extents which in my opinion are good. We make modify some foods and make them carry noncancerous particles, or make it so they won’t have any seeds. A GMO is an acronym people use to mean “genetically modified object.” Genetically engineered foods are good and we are using them to the right extent because we can get more desirable traits in the plants/animals we love, make food that is better for the environment, and there are no recorded or known …show more content…

Scientists have made potatoes that produce less of a cancer-causing substance when they are fried. They’ve also made seedless plants, such as seedless grapes and seedless watermelons. (2) They have also altered foods to have healing properties used for vaccines and medicines such as the cocoa plant, opium poppy, and meadow sweet. (9) Some GMOs even have a longer shelf life because of their alterations. A lot of genetically modified foods are better for the environment. Plant’s genes have been changed to have a better resistance to insects so not as much pesticides are needed.(2) Without as many pesticides being used more animals are safe and the all around community around the area is cleaner and safer. Some GMOs have become more immunity from drought, diseases, and more tolerance to warm and cold temperatures. It has also increased crop yield. Certain adjustments have also allowed plants not to require so much environmental source like water and fertilizer, so we can use those sources for other things.
