Humor is our way of expressing our opinions and thoughts, in a way that lets us see the gravity of the situation but in a less complex, serious tone. In the book Status Anxiety, Alain de Botton, believes that Humor is vital to Society, due to it allowing “humorist to say things that other people cannot or will not say”. Button is right in believing that Humor is vital to society. It allows for other people to feel more comfortable expressing their own opinions without it turning into a serious discussion. Humor as found itself in political cartoons, Stand-up comedy like comedian Gabriel Iglesias, and TV shows like Saturday Night Live. Humor can take our thoughts and opinions on important social issues and tune it into something that is funny and inviting, gathering people's attention, allowing that topic to spread and creating …show more content…
Gabriel Iglesias is a Stand-up comedian of Mexican background, who grew up in El Paso, Texas. Iglesias has had a different experience growing up that he can relate to the latino community through your typical stereotypes. Informing other people about the Hispanic culture in the US. But also on voice other options that Hispanics might have towards other opinions and stereotypes. Through his Stand-up comedy, Iglesias can deliver the truth about their reality, and putting a different light on stereotypes that many people see Hispanics as, as well as on the experiences of a Hispanic living in America. This allows other people to understand the topic leading to new understand or Hispanic culture, allowing them to take into account how these opinions and experiences play out in our
Hispanic Americans are often stereotyped in today’s society. Stereotypes that are said about Hispanic Americans include: The lazy Mexican, the Greaser, drug dealers, and gang bangers. These Stereotypes leave an image on all the Mexican Americans as being bad people. The media has been playing a big part in showing stereotypes but we tend to ignore them because they use it in a way were comedy is being introduced. For example, the television show George Lopez involves a Mexican American family going through their daily routines in the city of Los Angeles, where the majority of the population are Hispanics. In the George Lopez show, George Lopez plays the father role and every night when he gets
In Status Anxiety, author de Botton correctly claims that humorists are expected to not only entertain their audience, but to make statements about controversial events that may be too sensitive to say directly and causally present them in a way that is easy for the public to understand. This is demonstrated through various forms of media such as television shows and political cartoons.
No belief or idea is as important to me as humor. To quote Henry Drummond from Inherit the Wind, “When you lose your power to laugh, you lose your power to think straight.” Having humor is having perspective, and in doing so allows people to find truth and nuance in an otherwise black-and-white situation. Humor allows me to personally detach from a scenario and analyze it from a bird’s eye view, giving me the edge to understand what others cannot. Apart from seeking truth from humor and identifying the absurd, humor brings people together, whether it be in times of conflict or indifference. Humor is why shows like Last Week Tonight and The Daily Show thrive in times of political divisiveness, poking fun at the absurdities in politics and getting
In the case of Julio Iglesias, I believe that it was for him hard to enter the mainstream. At that time, rock and roll was very popular and for an artist not to try and fit into the mainstream by what’s most popular in the country shows integrity from Julio Iglesias. In Clara E. Rodriguez book “Latin Looks: Images of Latinas and Latinos in the U.S Media” she had a chapter dedicated to the stereotypes in Hollywood and Rodriguez said there are six stereotypes of Latinos. One of them being the Latino Lover, which Julio Iglesias fitted perfectly in the 1980’s, since he was very charming and flirtatious. Nevertheless, having that stereotype made him able to continue to do the music he like and not change his music into rock and roll, while still
This socially constructed identity for Latinos held the community back for decades. A prime example, Bill Dana in the show “Jose Jimenez”, was a successful Latino actor for a time. Dana’s identity was not consistent with authentic Latino culture because he is not truly even of Latino decent and, therefore, has no idea or experience of life as a Latino. Dana was stereotyping and generalizing the perceived idea of Latinos. Throughout his career, Dana wasn’t always even recognized as Latino. He was often confused for Armenian or Italian. However, he actually was meant to portray a Bolivian character. He didn’t actually portray any authentic Latino characteristics, but was simply out to preserve his acting career. In reality, Dana only reinforced false stereotypes of Latino people. Most of his success was generate from humor, or the underlying belittlement and misrepresentation of Latinos. Dana’s foolish character was seen as insulting by much of the Latino community, and, eventually, this led to the downfall of his career. Finally, a new perspective began to rise in the public eye and Spanish TV stations and newspapers such as “Hoy” took the time to connect with
Mexican- American actor, comedian, and producer George Lopez was born on April 23, 1961 in Mission Hills, California. Growing up, Lopez had a difficult childhood. Both his parents abandoned him at a young age, and he was raised by his grandparents (“Lopez,” 2016). He would often be bullied by his peers for having a big head and very distinguishable Latino features such as dark skin (Navarro, 2002). His main caretaker, his grandmother, often wouldn’t express much love to her grandson and was very harsh to him during his upbringing (Navarro, 2002). Though Lopez didn’t have the best moments as a child, he would later take all his early experiences and turn them into comedy entertainment through his stand-up and television shows.
Jose Vargas tells the story of his life; from coming to America, finding out that he is residing here illegally, learning how to live with that, and finally to sharing with everyone that he is an undocumented immigrant. Jose has a difficult task in front of him, though. He must win his audience over to his side so that he can further his agenda of developing an easier path for undocumented immigrants to receive citizenship. There are many ways he could go about this, trying to skirt the topic of his illegal activities, but Jose is an intelligent man and knows how to influence his audience. He uses the story of his life to connect with others, and in connecting with them wins them over, even if only indeterminably so. In My Life as an
He spoke with a slight, yet noticeable accent and started his seminar with a little about his life and where came from. His passion for speaking about the view on Latinos comes from how the media portrays them. He really wanted his audience to walk away from this speech, with the view that all the illegal immigrants that came to America are not bad people. Also that the media, specifically Trump, paints them
According to comedians.about.com,He hosted a radio show in the late '90s and was the first Latino to host a top-rated English-language show in Los Angeles, the country's biggest market.
Norman Cousins said, “Laughter is a powerful way to tap positive emotions" (Moss 1). Humor is studied by many researchers in sociology, psychology, art, literature, and medicine. When people wonder whether humor aids in areas other than health, a treasure trove of possible benefits to the learning or educational community is opened up. Humor can be used as a tool to promote learning.Research speaks to the many benefits of humor in healing, to its benefits in the classroom or boardroom, from reducing stress of students or employees, to boosting self-esteem and feelings of camaraderie. Additionally, studies show that those who use humor to convey a message are often more favorably perceived. Humor helps deliver the presenter's message to
Throughout time, humorists have been able to pull off a phenomenon, which allows for others to laugh about sensitive, stressful topics. With talent, humorists are able to captivate positive emotion from their audience and allow for society to see delicate issues in an unbiased view. Although humorists are commonly seen as people who only intend to entertain, humorists purposefully say things through their work that allow for hard issues to be spoken or illustrated.
When we have dreams we do everything possible to achieve them. We are sometimes faced with barriers that prevent, or make it harder for us to accomplish our goals. Latinos in the United States work hard to give their families a better life. Latinos all have faced many challenging circumstances in order to accomplish their dreams. Latinos look up to other Latinos and when they see other Latinos that have succeed then they feel that they too can succeed in what ever they put their mind to. George Lopez is a Mexican American comedian and actor. He serves as a great role model for every Latino. He went through a lot of tough situations that made his life hard. George Lopez has not only served as a great example of a Latino accomplishing his goals through hard circumstances, but he has never forgotten where he comes from, he has always given back to the community and has also represented the Latino community in the united states.
According to him, he said, “Being American means to be free.” He felt that his generation is different from ours, now that we have the internet and he feels it has brought good but also bad. He believes people now don’t pay attention to people because now they are on their phones and that before, people would have fun without the internet. Guillermo says, “Here in America, there is freedom and there’s many cultures, so it’s really cool to meet people with different cultures/backgrounds and because of that I get to have more knowledge of them,” to the question of being from a different culture in America today.
Latinos are portrayed in media as having to fight a large variety of forces and this film attempts to document a couple of these through their characters. Guadalupe Molina, struggles to take care of her brothers and sisters while her parents work; Ana Delgado, is pressured to drop out of school to begin working in her family business; Claudia Camejo; is discouraged to pursue Calculus by her mother because “boys don’t like you if you’re too smart”; and Pancho is encouraged to drop out of school to work as a mechanic for what he believes is a reasonable wage. The AP Calculus gives the students hope to enter college, evidenced by a scene in which Angel brings his sick grandma to Mr. Escalante’s house on Christmas to ask him for another chance to be in the class. He tells Mr. Escalante, “I need Calculus to get me to a good career Johnny.” The film uses a variety of examples of adversity in attempt to make this story seem more “inspirational” but the characters in this film are not given more personal characteristics and simply identifiable by their struggles. The audience does not know about their likes or dislikes, or a lot about their personalities. They are a diverse Latino cast but their usage as people that just need to be “saved” does not give these
When I first think about why I have a passion for comedy, I think of it as being powerful and special. It is one of those things that can unite people. Laughter doesn’t discriminate, it doesn’t matter your ethnicity, religion, political opinion, etc., this is what I believe makes it so captivating. With humor you can as least for a little while forget about everything going on around you, regardless of the simplicity or complexity of the situation. It is a way for us to keep our sanity and gives us the opportunity to come together and put serious issues aside or be able to look at those issues in a less hostile manner. Laughter is one of those things everyone can appreciate, and should have a healthy amount of
