Gabrielle Bonheur “Coco” Chanel is one of the greatest fashion inventors of all time. In her early life as a child, she was put in an orphanage by her father after her mother’s death. Her father worked as a peddler and didn’t make enough money to take care of her. He barely made enough money to keep himself alive. The nuns of her orphanage taught her how to sew which became a vital know-how for her career later on. To earn money to live on her own, she started a singing career at local clubs in Vichy and Moulins where her nickname “Coco” began. At about 20 years of age, Chanel began a relationship with Etienne Balsan who offered her money to help her start her career. She left Etienne for a wealthier friend of his, Arthur “Boy” Chapel. Both of these men were a key ingredient in Coco’s first fashion experiment. When she opened her first shop on Paris’s Rue Cambon in 1910, she sold hats. When she began making clothes, she put a store in Deauville and one in Biarritz. Her first successful piece of work was a dress she made from an old jersey. In 1925, she made the suit with a tight fitted skirt and a collarless jacket, popular. Her designs were made with things from a man’s closet, but making them feminine. She also tried to make these outfits comfortable rather than the constraints of the outfits that were popular at that time.
