Many students question themselves of what they might learn from taking an English class. If they will understand the material or if what they learn in class will be used later in their lives. Gaining something out of a class is what matters the most or why else would a student take that class in the first place. Through my observations and experiences if someone were to ask me what I learned in English 101, I would say that I have improved as a student overall. Taking English 101 has helped me to become a more specialized writer, a more studious student, and a person who is more minded person.
First and foremost, English professor has taught me to be a specialized writer in many categories of writing. Such as
The reason I decided to take English 102 this fall semester is because it is a required course for my career path. I am currently pursuing a nursing degree and one of the many required classes that must be completed prior to achieving my goal is this English course. This English class is primarily a requirement for school but I hope to obtain new knowledge as well. What I hope to gain from taking this course is a better understanding of how to write correctly, to be grammatically correct that is. Also, I hope to learn from others by taking this course, not only the instructor but my fellow students. I want to step out of my comfort zone and not be so timid, so that I am able to understand how others think and comprehend this subject. As of right now I have no set expectations for this course, I only hope that it is new information and that it gives me a better understanding of how I need to write and think as far as English goes.
I used to consider writing as tumble words from your mind, write, read it through, fix minor mistakes, and done. However, you rarely get successful. The truth is many students, including myself, struggle with starting to write a word, or getting stuck in the middle without knowing the main point of the writing. After completing English 101, I can explain the writing process, evaluate the strengths of my essay, and identify my weaknesses.
This year in our English 1010 class, we covered many different genres and types of writing. We covered how to write personal narratives, how to respond to other students and other forms of writing, and how to professionally write essays. Briefly, we touched down on how to write argumentatively and were also required to create an infographic, wish was probably my favorite assignment. Although I never thought of myself as a strong writer, I believe that this class has greatly improved not only my writing skills, but my thinking skills as well. This was my first English class to be taken through dual enrollment and I believe that it went quite successfully while challenging me as a writer.
In English 102 I would consider it to be the best writing experience of my life. There would be times where I would say that it was the most struggling class I ever had with my grammar and word choices. I would always have to prove my self to Professor Hohmann who is are an English professor at CAC (Central Arizona College) That I can write professionally as a student. I would have six assignments in the English course to prove myself that I can write as good as a college student. The tasks that were given to me for grades were beneficial for other classes and in life. One of the assignments where the research paper for the topic that I liked of which that there needed to be two sides. Another task that helped me out with my writing was the
As I look back on my English 101 experience, I have come to the conclusion that I have learned many new things that have improved my abilities as a writer. I have learned some new techniques that have improved my ways of approaching an essay. I learned all about the rhetorical appeals and how to apply them in my writing and how to look for them in a essay written by a author. I have also learned how to argue both sides of a argument, and how to look for reliable sources and to properly quote and site the author of the essay. I feel as if I have become a better writer and my improved writing skills are shown within each essay.
English 111 has made a positive impact on me as a student. I have learned a lot in English considering the short amount of time I have spent in the class. English has always been one of my strong points, but I have always looked to find ways to improve my English skills. During the class I learned several new techniques and skills to improve myself as a student. I am glad I had a smart professor to help guide me along the way.
Starting this year, I thought English 102 was just going to be another general education requirement I needed to have in order to graduate. English has never been my favorite subject, so I guess it is safe to say that I was not super excited about this class. However, this class turned out to be different then I thought. It turned out to be more useful then I originally thought. English 102 was both helpful and fairly simple because of what what I learned, the effort I put in and how prepared I was.
I have only been attending Cleveland State University for two semesters, and as this course comes to an end I feel like I grown and learned many techniques more than ever. I came to Cleveland State University with only my high school knowledge on how to format an argumentative essay, and throughout this course I now know how to write and format many other papers. Taking English 100 has taught me how to break down and analyze an article, it taught me how to find confidence in my work, and it helped me grow to an even better writer.
As writers, many students write to the expectations of their professors and not to their fullest potential. Throughout English 101 I had been writing only to please my professor or to fill the basic requirement to pass English. I always felt that my writing ability was never enough for my professors throughout the previous years. They always wanted clear and concise essays, which for some reason was unreachable by me. However, starting college and taking English 101 helped me with my weaknesses and changed my technique of writing essays. My experience in English 101 taught me to write to my fullest potential and to write what I felt; rather then writing what was required.
It does this in two ways. First, it offers writing help and second it is an easy way to bring up your grade in English. Firstly, the writing class offers help. If the student has biology paragraphs due tomorrow the writing class could help the writing not only be efficient but clear as well. It will teach the student everything needed to write successfully. This means that they will write better and turn in better work for that. This all leads to get better grades in that subject. Secondly, this class is an easy boost for english. All there is to do in this class is to correct work from the english class taught by the same teacher. If the student takes constructive criticism and corrects the work, they can easily get good grades. If this class is 25% of the english grade that means even a failing student can get a 100% in english. However, they must be passing the writing class with an A at least. The writing class boosts academic
The first year of high school was especially challenging since it was the first time I experienced an American high school. My English was not good at all and the system resulted confusing for me. Regardless the difficulties I did especial efforts to improve my English. My grades are proof of such effort since my academic performance improved from an average grade of b to an average of solid
I am writing to you in regards that you want to know more about me. You have taught me ELA in the past two years, in grade nine first semester, and also in grade ten ELA advanced placement in semester one. My skills in English has improved since I moved to Canada three years ago. In Nigeria, I was taught how to write a paragraph differently from what it is in Canada, and this makes it difficult for me to write up to the Canadian standard.
One may ask “Why do we have to attend English classes when we can already speak and write?” Well, the reason is to master the skills of writing a good argument, which we expect to learn in English classes. In our lives, everything we do comes with reasons, so that we can justify our actions. This applies to different genres of literature as well; in the ghost stories genre, authors attempt to scare, teach moral lessons or entertain through their writings. Even each ghost story has its own significant purpose. In the ghost story, “The Open Window”, Saki deliberately replaces ghosts with a human character who manipulates truths in order to prove the ultimate danger of the unpredictability of human behavior.
Since I was a young child, my parents have been communicating with me in English. They have always encouraged me to study, especially with new languages. I have learned to speak three languages from my childhood. I realize that I can develop these three languages at the same time, but English, I find it very necessary. Therefore, I have decided to develop English as my first choice. In developing my English skills, I have used three simple steps.
I have never really paid attention to certain languages or how people talk, until last year in my senior english class. My English teacher's name was Ms.Gibbons, she was short with short brown hair, and skin as white as a ghost. Her classroom was at the very end of a long hallway, tables sit up in a U shape with chairs all around them, blueish carpet, white walls with english signs everywhere, one row of computers across from the 9 windows, a smart board at the front of the room, and also her brown desk at the front of the room. My class was going to start a new subject on dialect. One of the assignments were to take a test on the internet. The test had many different objects, animals, food, etc, I had to answer the question with whatever I called the object it showed. The results of the test guessed what state I were from based on what I called these objects. Odd how one little test can guess where you're living by the way you talk or call things. Different languages came to my attention by the way people call objects different things, people's accents, and the way people pronounce things.
