At 1:15pm Saturday afternoon, I am currently hanging out at the student gaming center with the pool tables and a line of arcades in front of me. At least nine to twelve players are gathered around 2 gaming arcade machines in front of me. The two main popular ones that are of interest would be the Street Fighter 3rd Strike and the Marvel vs Capcom 2 machines. The gamers are heavily immerse in watching the players and cheering them on. I am observing four players playing on two separate machines. The two players who are on MVC2 are wearing both hooded jackets and baggy jeans with tennis shoes. I can see the vines pulsing on the sides of their forehead and one of the players just picked up a Gatorade bottle and drank the yellow liquid, lemon flavor I presume. His opponent next to him just wiped the sweat off his forehead with his right arm and yelled that that was a cheap and dirty move. The players that have more spectators I observe a higher level of energy being presented and a potential hostility. The gamers who are playing on the 3rd strike machine were a lot more calm and benevolent. I will hear the players commend each other about how that was a great move and basically playing nice. Compared to the players on the MVC2 machine where the players would suggest that it was a lucky shot in a mean way. The players that are watching contribute to the heat by instigating and yelling out fighting words I can see that the players are irritated and playing much more aggressive, the tapping of the buttons and movements of the joystick is much more prevalent and erratic. The players on the 3rd strike machine even stopped a few times to watch the battle going on and two guys from the pool table nearby would occasionally look up to watch the commotion. After thirty minutes in, there had been three rotations of players on the MVC2 machine and I noted that one of the players had been winning against all his opponents. The traditional approach is seen in scenario one I believe. In the traditional approach the coach teaches the players a couple of different drills, each one at a time in a professional manner, and then after those types of drills they go right into a scrimmage at the end of practice, with no introduction into a game-like setting. The second scenario is known as the Game Approach. I have to a few games already but only 2 of them were in the new gym. I expect to see as usual, as many gryphons supporters as the other team, they are usually pretty even. I know the ambience is going to be unreal and special as usual. I always felt good and different when I stepped in the gym to find a sit. The music, the girls warming up, everyone talking checking their phone are always the things I liked the most. I hope that during the game people actually cheer for the team, I remember there were games where the audience just watch and never cheers. Almost everyone in the world has played some sort of videogame before. They exist everywhere and are becoming more and more accessible due to the globalization of technology. On average you will spend 10,000 hours playing video games from 5th to 12th grade (McGonigal, 2010). It is estimated that 68% of households play video games (Evolution of Games, 2010). So where did video games originate from? What was the first game ever created?
The consumer video game systems offer an exciting opportunity to discuss and analyze the design of technology based on the strategy of each of the players within the industry. We will focus our analysis on the next generation of video consoles: Nintendo’s Wii, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3).
Since several video games contain some sort of violent content, it has been hypothesized that gamers nowadays tend to be more aggressive. Gentile also states that “playing violent games increases aggressive behaviors, increases aggressive cognitions, [and] increases aggressive emotions.” This is an intense list of negative consequences, but what makes violent games instill such hostility? Many video games today include multiplayer in addition to classical single player modes. With real life opponents, gamers are much more competitive and inclined to demonstrate dominance over friends and real life opponents. Whereas facing a computer can be competitive, there may be a stronger feeling of satisfaction after defeating a nonvirtual enemy which could translate into real life aggression towards real people. Though correlation does not mean causation, the fear that violent video games may increase problematic antagonism is clearly not misplaced.

Beside the mental effects of gaming, lay the physical effects. Another belief of gaming is that it is physically threatening, and if not taken in moderation, that may be true, but at face value, some video games can be a very useful tool for physical fitness. “Serious” games, as mentioned previously, are games that are designed for personal improvement, but as stated by Mark Baxter, “serious” games are just a subgenre of a more encompassing genre known as lifestyle games. According to Baxter, these games lack the more academic focus typically associated with “serious” games, yet still focus primarily on improvement through tier one gaming experiences. An example he gives of a successful lifestyle game is Wii Fit, which is a game that consists of exercise activities. He also claims that games like these have been adopted in several physiotherapy rehabilitation centers (Brain Health and Online Gaming). Baxter is right on this claim. These lifestyle games, also known as fitness games, contain a variety of physical benefits, including rehabilitation, and thankfully, several console designers are attempting to embrace these positives. In 2006, Nintendo released the Wii console, which is the console Baxter’s example was played on. It saw large commercial success due to its ability to provide gamers with an entertaining and physically stimulating experience, selling over one-hundred million units worldwide.
