Researchers increasingly view resilience not as a fixed attribute but as an alterable set of processes that can be fostered and cultivated (Pardon, Waxman & Huang, 1999; Masten, 2001). The interactive processes – between the individual and environment and between risk and protective factors have been emphasised to be the crucial underpinnings of developing resilience. As per the Garmezy’s (1991) triadic model, resilience is a process that empowers individuals to shape their environment and to be shaped by it in turn. The model talks about a dynamic interaction between various risk and protective factors at three levels; viz. individual, family, and environmental. Considering resilience as a dynamic process, it becomes evident that it may vary with time, i.e. an individual may be highly resilient at some instances but vulnerable at other, depending on the interactions taking place between the person and their environment and between risk and protective factors in an their life (Winfield, 1991; Werner & Smith, 1992; Borman & Rachuba, 2001).
