So you had a piece of your grill break, and it’s just not worth it to buy a new one? Or you want to install an exhaust on your car and don’t want to pay a shop? Or you’re looking for a new hobby that will give you a skill that so valuable, individuals make six figures a year doing it as a job? Then I suggest you continue reading this article. Obviously something interested you about MIG welding, or you wouldn’t have read this far. MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding has been around since World War Two. Later on, welders realized that non-inert gases such as carbon-dioxide, could be used as well. Today, it is considered to be GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding), but is still very commonly referred to as MIG welding. The way a MIG welder works is electricity from your home powers the electrode, or wire, in the welder. The handle of the welder that the person welding holds has a trigger, which pushes the wire out of the nozzle and into the welding joint. There, the wire melts, along with the base metal, to form a molten pool of metal, which the welder manipulates to join metal together. One thing to remember is that with a MIG welder, you can only weld ferrous metals, or those that contain iron. For metal such as aluminum, you will require a TIG welder, which is similar, but requires a whole other article to itself. Now, before you get started, make sure you have all the essentials and safety gear. You’ll want welding gloves, a welder’s mask set to a shade of about 12, a long sleeved shirt, pants that aren’t frayed or have holes in them, and good leather boots or shoes.
