I read the book Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry. This book is about being strong through rough times and trusting yourself. In the beginning of the book Kira’s Mom passed away. This was not her first loss, because when she was a tyke her Dad had been killed by beasts. Kira is the main character in this book. She is a strong, talented person who has been through lots. With Kira in the book, it becomes more relatable. This is one reason the book is so entertaining. Kira has a huge role in this book! Without Kira in the book it would just seem like the daily life of a village. To some people(like Vandara) Kira is the conflict. Therefore, if Kira was taken out of the book it would be boring. Kira also figures out all the problems with the council. …show more content…
This is like a domino effect, it all started when Vandara accused Kira for being useless, “The accused orphan girl Kira is here!”(Lowry 23). During this strong opinions are said that mean life or death for Kira. “She drags that leg around like a useless burden. She is slow and eats a lot.”(Lowry 27). Another quote is, “There is no room for this useless girl. She can’t marry. No one wants a cripple. She takes up space, and food, and she causes problems with the discipline of the tykes, telling them stories, teaching them games so that they make noise and disrupt the work.” (Lowry 28). Next, Kira is allowed to live! “The orphan girl Kira will stay. She will have a new role.” (Lowry 49). “Kira, you will continue your mother’s work. You will go beyond her work, actually, since your skill is far greater than hers was. First, you will repair the robe as your mother always did. Next, you will restore it. Then your true work will begin. You will complete the robe.” (Lowry 49). Later in the story, more conflicts develop such as Anabella’s …show more content…
She be gone to the Field right when the sun be coming up. Draggers tooken her. I seen it.” “To the Field? What are you talking about, Matt? She couldn’t possibly walk to the Field from her cott! It’s too far! She’s too old! And she wouldn’t want to anyway.” “I said they tooken her! She be dead!” (Lowry 133). This was unbelievable, just the other day she was teaching Kira how to dye threads! After a hard week Kira’s dye station was ready. This only brought back memories and more thoughts. Luckily, Thomas had written down what Kira learned each day. This is why Kira was successful in dying threads. Kira also had a very strong relationship with her mom. After death, Kira was devastated. Her mom was the only one that believed in her, encouraged her, and was helpful. Kira’s mom taught her and never stopped fighting. Although, Matt was all these things he was only a child. The theme of this book is to be strong through the toughest times. This theme is shown throughout the book when Kira is the only one alive in her family, Anabella passes away, and even when Matt was lost. Another theme could be trust your instincts. Kira has all these thoughts about the council, Annabella, beasts and many more but she keeps them to herself. Day after day more thoughts pile up. If Kira were to trust herself, her life would have a greater quality. As you read more of the story the theme becomes a larger part of
My first theme is don't give up. The theme of don't give up is a important theme because she is always running into issues. When Kira is born at the beginning of the book she learns her father has been taken by beats. A few pages later her mom dies to a unknown sickness. They burn all her stuff as to take precautions in case the sickness was contagious. Another way the theme was important was when Vandara took Kira to the council of guardians to try and make her go out to the field because she had a disability and they usually gave disabilitated kids to the beasts at birth. She could not give up hope that she would be sent to the beasts and at the end she was allowed to stay and got the job as the weaver for the singers robe. This shows that people can push through bad situations and are able to profit from it. You should never give up at anything you do.
The first theme is prominent towards the end of the book; being true to yourself and not changing who you are to fit in. The novel demonstrates this through a conversation between Leo and Stargirl. The novel states, “ Walking with her after school that day, I said, “I guess you’re giving up, huh?” She looked at me. “Giving up? On what?” “On being popular. On being…” How could I say it? She said
The theme is the main idea in which why the author may have chosen to write the story. Although there is more than one theme present, there is one theme that is eminent compared to other additional themes. The theme that Thompson portrayed was that the people who are closest to one and one interacts with the most has an increased chance to betray one at one's weakest points. One of the ways Thompson chose to expose the theme is through a large amount of conflict. The mother of Roy Dillon, Lilly Dillon, was an immense part of the conflict. Lilly Dillon was never much of a mother to Roy Dillon, Lilly would act as a ¨selfish older sister¨ which Roy despised (11). Thompson, early on, made the choice to set the relationship of the mother and the son early on so the reader could get an idea of what to expect from the mother. The main theme, betrayal, is later exposed in the story when the conflict of Roy and Lilly ends abruptly. ¨Her son had been killed¨ by his own mother, Lilly, which ended the conflict (200). Although, his mother had been very amiable in the beginning, in the end he is unfortunately betrayed which is the main exposure of the theme. In conclusion, theme was affected by another literary element,
When Lois Lowry first introduces Kira in the book, she is a girl who has just lost her mother, and is a physiological character. “Kira felt aloneness, the uncertainty, and a great sadness.” “There was a fear of cold, sickness, and hunger.” Kira started as a physiological character because she had nothing to drink or eat along with having no shelter. As the end of the book approaches, Kira has become a self-actualized character. “Recalling it now, Kira knew, suddenly and with clarity, what it all meant. It was so simple.” Now knowing new things of her village, Kira is a self-actualized character because she has learned what everything means and accepted the fact that she must stay and thread the future for her
Not being loved or belonged can make your feel depressed and hopeless. Not knowing what to do with your life or being clueless can give you pessimistic thoughts. Gathering Blue is novel by Lois Lowry that is about a girl named Kira who has to survive and belong despite the death of her mom and the so called death of her dad. It teaches her different situation by which she has to overcome without the help of her parents. Maslow’s Hierarchy is a theory that states all humans order of needs, not wants, that are key to surviving and belonging. In Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry, the main character Kira goes through every level of Maslow’s Hierarchy throughout the book. It takes her the whole book to aculize, but she started from the bottom and worked her way to the top.
In June 1947, while flying his small plane, businessman and civilian pilot Kenneth Arnold reported seeing nine objects moving at high speeds through the skies over Washington’s Mount Rainier. Widely publicized reports of Arnold’s experience, followed by an increasing number of reported UFO sightings, led the U.S. Air Force to begin an investigation into the sightings, called Operation Sign, in 1948. The initial investigation resulted in the formation of Project Blue Book in 1952; that project became the longest running of the U.S. government’s official inquiries into UFO sightings, compiling reports on more than 12,000 sightings or related events from 1952 to its dismantling in 1969.
Some of the themes in this book are Dystopian society and Love. The Dystopian society plays a huge role in this book it is where they look be how they act according to the government and what they are supposed to do. Love is a key role in this book because Cassia will stop at nothing to get to Ky.
However my theme is, growing up is a challenge, I chose that theme because of Nagaina and her babies by reason of they needed to grow up, either Nagaina had to or she had to make her babies grow up. Rikki was selfish and unforgiving and so is Nagaina. I say that Rikki is because he never took the time to actually make peace with the snakes. Nagaina never forgave the animals for invading her space, as in like getting too close to her babies or making her think that they need to be eliminated to protect themselves. Although the theme can relate to reality, such as our mothers and fathers and how they act, everyone is different in their own way. We all have our families and they could be a little like Nag and Nagaina because of caring for their kids. Therefore all these traits can be different for
There are a few themes that I noticed in the book All We Have Is Now. The themes that I identified in the book are friendship, death, and depression. Friendship is one of the main themes because the main character, Emerson her only friend is Vince so they are learning to trust each other and care about each other. Death is a theme because the world is ending, a giant meteor is coming and going to kill them. Lastly, depression is a theme because almost everyone in the book are suffering from depression and the main character Emerson has suicidal thoughts.
To begin with, one major theme that continuously played a part throughout the entire book is desire. To many of the characters, it was the one urge that they could never overcome. One
Abuse and hate makes up the basis for which the leaders of the community control the citizens. Kira did not understand that she was a victim of abuse because she was taught to believe that she deserved to be treated with hate due to her deformity. It was only until Kira began to see other people being tortured that she understood the treatment she had endured was wrong. At a local festival every year, a well liked teenage boy sings every year and he is greatly admired for his beautiful singing voice. When, Kira visited the most recent concert she noticed,
The theme fits the novel since the whole book in summary portrays about how people were taken away and stipped of their identity and they have no way of getting back to it nor their home. Aminata would talk about her father frequently as one could tell she loved him dearly having quite an impact on her throughout her childhood. She would recount instances saying “One day, he crouched low to the ground and called up for me. Up I climbed onto his back, all
These themes weave perfectly into the plot and complement the character traits. As the book goes on, we see how second chances impact the relationships the characters have with each other, and with family is forever, we see how important it is to care for others. These themes are very important life messages that I will live by for the rest of my life, and I will feel satisfied when I take the themes right to the
The theme is revealed very well by reading the book not outright said by one of the characters. This is an interesting thing about the book making you want to read
Blue’s Clues specifically set out to fix these problems. Cognitive development was vital, but they wanted to do it in a way that didn’t sacrifice fun or comprehension. First, they addressed the issue of comprehension. As long as things happened logically, as long as kids could make a connection, it didn’t matter the length of the segments. At the time a dominant theory in developmental theory, Piaget’s work meant that easily distractible children couldn’t handle large jumbles of video or longer segments. Sesame Street supported the first part of this, by showing children couldn’t understand things out of order. But Blue’s Clues challenged the second part, and in doing so changed the idea of the length of child’s attention span (Jaffe). This
