Gattaca Cloning Effects

Decent Essays

“Cloning is a return to asexual reproduction and bypasses the caprice of the genetic lottery and random shuffling of genes” (Hardy, Pg.3). Cloning is taking DNA from another organism and inserting the DNA into anther organism, so they look and act the same. Cloning can lead to many terrible problems such as, early death, rights issues, and devaluing human life. If scientist continue cloning, the side effects can cause early deaths. People will want their cloned pet to live as long as possible, but the clone will most likely live up to half of their lifespan. “The majority of (male) mice cloned died after approximately 500 days, which was around 50% of the lifespan in control mice” (Wells, Pg. 225). The owner of the pet will have less time …show more content…

Many people will want their child as perfect as possible, but it will affect society because everyone wants a perfect child. “A strong objection against human cloning and genetic engineering technologies is that the could be combined to design and mass reproduce desirable traits, bringing about a society organized around rigid social hierarchies and genetic discrimination - as vividly portrayed in the film Gattaca (1997)” (Best, Pg. 17). Eventually everyone in society will be clones. The clones would not be able to inherit traits from their family. “Noting the increased power of genetic science, which opens up vast prospects for improving health, but also has the power to diminish humanity fundamentally by producing a child through human cloning or by intentionally producing an inheritable genetic change.” (Annas, Pg. 154). If people continue cloning, there would not be any more families with their own heritage. Most people want to keep their heritage and not have clones ruin their …show more content…

Couples can genetically make as many children as they planned on having. “Two primary arguments have been set forth in fewer of proceeding with cloning (and its first cousin, inheritable genetic alterations.) First, cloning is type of human progress that could lead to new type of genetic immortality, therefore, to prevent it is to be anti-scientific” (Annas, Pg.158). That couples will finally have a family have a family they have been wanting. Going back to anti-cloning even though that family will have their child or children they asked for, others will try to create a genetically child. “This was, of course, the nightmare of Aldous Huxley, who continued H.G. Well’s speculations on a genetically engineered society and creation of new species. Indeed, with only trivial qualifications, Huxley’s Brave New World (1932) of genetic engineering, cloning, addictive pleasure drugs (soma), entertainment and media spectacles, and media spectacles, and media spectacles, and intense social engineering has arrived” (Best, Pg.17). Everyone would create children by cloning and eventually everyone in the society will have cloned children. Everyone should not be creating children by
